Greengate Cottage is situated in Hutton le Hole, one of North Yorkshires prettiest villages. It is near to Kirkbymoorside, Pickering, Helmsley, York and the North Yorkshire coast. The village is on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors and is ideally located for exploring the moors and the coast. The cottage is very comfortable with all the facilities provided for a relaxing break. There is an open fire in the lounge and the cottage is close to the local pub offering excellent food and drink.

The games cupboard was really appreciated.  The previous tenants had left dirty oven trays on the oven. 

Beds were so comfy and house so spacious though we all just stayed in the kitchen!  If anything we’d have benefited from tea towels but this is a minor thing

Keys were in the lock up and the code had been sent prior to my arrival.  The property was clean and well equipped. The beds were very comfortable and towels and linens provided. There were instructions for everything which was very handy and the village is very quaint!

We came and stayed, but there were a lot of disappointments.  A few things were disappointing: 1. The bathrooms: there are two full bathrooms and one additional toilet. The upstairs shower had zero water pressure and no removable shower head so we couldn't rinse the bottom of the shower cabin, but the water wasn't draining anyway so we stopped using it. Hot water was supposed to be on demand but wasn't - it was disappearing mid shower or not heating up at all until we discovered a boost mode on the thermostat. It would have been nice to know. 2. Facilities in the kitchen: small fridge considering the house fits 8 people, freezer with broken drawers. Sticky plates and cups in the cupboards. We had to wash everything before we used it. Scratched old pans that aren't safe to use anymore. Oven, hob, microwave all have seen better days and either burned food or undercooked it. 3. We found a card in the kitchen saying everything was cleaned with two names signed, but there were spider webs everywhere around stairs and ceilings, again sticky equipment in the kitchen. 4. Security deposits are paid, but things broken or ignored by previous guests aren't being replaced. No one checked that the coal wasn't filled, games were broken etc. What is this money going for? 5. You get one single key to open the house, which is fine, and a set of keys is in the bowl in the kitchen. One key was broken, the rest of the keys didn't open or close anything. We tried them on different doors since no instructions were given and we couldn't find a single match. The room with single beds has a door to another bedroom and that door wouldn't stay closed so it'd be nice to be able to lock it, because we had to barricade it with a chair. 6. Extremely squeaky beds. With all doors closed we could hear people in different bedrooms turning. 7. It says some extensions were installed for the WiFi, but the signal doesn't actually reach all the bedrooms. Those are just a few that came to mind.

It was roomy enough for all my family.  Location was good , and quite after a busy day out. 

We stayed at Greengate Cottage for the week and had a fabulous time.  Specifically, there is NO smell in the cottage.  We read some previous reviews and were a bit nervous of this but can report the owners have obviously dealt with the issue as we did not notice any smell of Oil.  The cottage is ideally located for exploring the moors, the coast (Whitby, Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay) and we visited York for a day.  The cottage is ideally located in the village and we spent much time people watching while sitting at the front of the cottage.  The Crown, 2 minute walk away. is a lovely pub and there are some equally lovely places to visit for good food in  Lastingham (The Blacksmiths), Gillamoor (The Royal Oak) and Appleton-le-Moors (The Moors Inn).  Greengate Cottage is comfortably furnished and provided the ideal base of a holiday with family and friends.  We will definitely be back, THANK YOU.

A wonderful couple of days at Green gate cottage. It was quiet and felt very homely. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Fabulous place. Lots of room. So peaceful and extremely comfortable. Easy walk to the moors. Amazing village too.  We loved our stay here and look forward to coming back.

Location and bedrooms were good, and the facilities were fair  The smell of the oil from the heating was really bad, and the step down from the hall to the kitchen causes problems  with guests who have poor mobility. There are no cupboards for food as too many cupboards full of glasses etc. The table and chairs at the back of the cottage were very dirty.

lovely location and spacious accommodation. good bedding and bath towels. generally well equipped with plenty of plates/glasses/cutlery etc.  smell of drains in downstairs shower room. lack of oven gloves/hand towel/only one tea towel in kitchen. plenty of saucepans etc but some not very clean. 

Good location for a family stay on the north York moors.

DO NOT BOOK THIS UNLESS YOU ARE ASSURED THE OILY SMELL HAS GONE! Our stay was overshadowed by the smell from the boiler (located between the snug and the kitchen) particularly when heating is on but also when hot water is heating. This has been masked by air fresheners making the smell even more cloying. It is a shame that the host did not warn us of the problem and was not transparent when we raised our concerns. The boiler is supposedly fixed and this is apparently residue but it is really strong and unpleasant, restricting us to sitting in the front room with no central heating which was needed with the weather having declined. Such a shame as the cottage is lovely and we had great days out. The bedrooms are really airy and beds comfortable. The Royal Oak at Gillamoor served delicious food too. As a side note, some fittings like blinds etc could do with a deep clean. More serving bowls would be useful and the hob doesn't seem to have much temperature control.

We had three nights in Hutton-le-hole staying in Greengate Cottage.  The owners were in touch and confirmed they had dealt with the previously reported 'smell' of oil and we didn't notice it at all.  The cottage was fresh, comfortable and provided all we needed for the three days.  The Crown pub was welcoming and we had a lovely evening in Helmsley. Will definitely be back as we had a fabulous time.

Excellent spacious cottage in the heart of the village of Hutton le Hole, we had a lovely weekend with extended family. There was plenty of space to gather to chat, eat or play and very comfortable bedrooms to escape to at night. Would definitely recommend

What a stunning cottage! We loved how beautiful and spacious it was. Lots of gorgeous little touches around the cottage, including lots of games that even our teenagers loved. It was in a gorgeous, peaceful little village that was so lovely to explore and it was easy to get to York (about 45 min drive).  The cottage really felt like home and the beds were so comfortable so we slept so well - we didn’t want to leave!

Fabulous stay at a cozy cottage, plenty of space and amenities for a weekend chill out weekend with friends. Crown pub served lovely food, staff and locals very friendly!  Shame we didn't find the walks folder until after our walk but it was a great walk anyway.  So lovely with the mild weather to!  Thanks!

Fabulous stay at cozy cottage

Great location in a beautiful village, good parking. however on entering the house we were met with an awful smell of heating oil fumes. A bad leak of heating oil had been found on the Monday and an attempt had been made to clean it up, unfortunately the awful smell was  made worse by the half dozen air fresheners that had been placed in the room with the boiler. We immediately turned the heating off which eased the fumes a little. At no point prior to arrival had we been told about this. We contacted the agency who offered to send someone out but we decided we would try and air the building. Unfortunately even after a full day of doors and windows being open it still wasn’t great especially in the bedrooms. This had also been reported by someone in March so it’s obviously a known problem. The place could also do with a deep clean and a little TLC. This property has so much potential and had we not experienced the issues we had I would be writing a very different review.

The size and the location.  The smell of kerosene! So bad we had to have windows and doors open for our safety. 

Horrendous.

Great location in a lovely village.  Comfy beds. However there seems to be an ongoing issue with lack of central heating. Previous two sets of guests also made comment to this effect. There was none! Unfortunately Host and Stay did nothing other than offer platitudes and not return my calls! The temperature was 10°C!! Diesel smell coming from the boiler was dreadful.  In the internal guide it said to replenish the logs when used, however there were no logs provided! The AirBnB info said there would be salt, pepper and oil provided, but again there was none. The bedcover on the bed in the room above the lounge was badly soiled. It needed washing or replacing.  The downstairs bathroom is in desperate need of a deep clean. That said, 4 lifelong friends got together and had a lovely weekend, rescued by one of them who provided us with logs, kindling and firelighters which enabled us to use the fire in the lounge. We did find an electric heater in the twin room, but it seemed faulty.

A wonderful downstairs space. Great location for walks.  The mould was at a dangerous level leaving 2 out the four rooms unusable. There was leak that host and stay new about but didn’t share with us and initally pretended they were unaware.  The kitchen was well stocked and resources but needed a deep clean.  Lovely downstairs bedroom - very comfy bed.

Lovelly character cottage in stunning little village.  Roof leaking into end bedroom, carpet water stained and bucket catching drips on arrival. Mentioned in comments book 4 months prior to our stay. Waste pipe in living room ceiling leaks onto u when sat on sofa when bath plug pulled. Downstairs shower room dirty. Kitchen drawers dirty. Alot of cobwebs. 

Could be really fantastic but currently not.

The property itself is lovely. Unfortunately the heating broke while we were there meaning the temperature inside the cottage dropped to 10 degrees. Despite best efforts to get someone to sort this out, and a promise of someone coming out to address the issue with the boiler, nobody arrived. Consequently the trip was very disappointing and the support from the holiday company less than satisfactory. Apparently they are still waiting to hear back from the owner but I don't hold out much hope of anything being forthcoming. Hopefully nobody else suffers the same experience.

This was a great find, suited all our needs, had a great location, parking and amount of space. would definitely recommend and stay again.

Lovely property in great location to explore the area and moors.

We had a very enjoyable stay at this cottage in Hutton Le Hole.  The location in the village was walkable to restaurant and pub.  It was clean and cozy.  The rooms were laid out perfectly for our family.  The village was very charming and all the locals were encountered throughout the stay were very friendly.  Highly recommend this cottage for a stay in the Yorkshire Moors.

Super property with all we needed. Comfortable and clean. Domestic essentials were provided, mot the case in many properties, but tea coffee and milk as well as washing up and dish washer kit. One of the prettiest villages in NYNNP with a pub, tea rooms and a great rural museum

Great stay

Well positioned house for walks, and the village is lovely - but sadly the sleeping arrangements meant we left two days early, as we couldn't sleep.  In the main bedroom (showcased on the first page) there's no blind for the Velux window, so my daughter was woken at 5am on day one, and we couldn't use that room for the rest of the stay.  The Velux blind on another bedroom was paper thin - as were the curtains for all the bedrooms - and one of the beds (in the twin room) so squeaky we couldn't use it.   Otherwise it’s all very basic. One of the toilets was out of order, shelves in the fridge and freezer were broken. There's no recharger in the bathroom. And you need to come with everything you need — in the kitchen, there’s no oven gloves; just a single tea towel; not even salt or pepper let alone oil or a welcome pack, which are very often provided for a house of this price. It's certainly very different from similar priced houses that we've stayed at.

We had a wonderful stay at Greengate cottage, Hutton-le-hole. It was perfect for our group of 8 - a beautiful cottage in a lovely location with a short walk to the local pub, museum and small cafes. We thoroughly enjoyed this b&b, which was well equipped and we would stay there again!

We loved our time in Greengate Cottage. Plenty of room for five adults. Great spot for exploring the Yorkshire countryside.

The quirkiness. A lived in home.  Every room had a clock, but none of them told the time. 

Doable in the circumstances

A beautiful cottage with plenty of room for our party of 6 adults, 2 children and a small dog.  All rooms perfectly equipped with large comfy beds. Lack of blinds and curtains in bedrooms was a slight  issue - up with the larks due to the light sky.  The downstairs shower room had a ‘smell’  - we thought drains maybe - but perfectly clean otherwise.  The whole layout of the cottage is lovely and homely - the books and games were a winner.  Hutton le Hole is picturesque- the little cafes and the pub served lovely food with very welcoming staff. The Museum was a hit - worth a visit - staff again - lovely.  Overall a very relaxing stay - would love to visit again.  Thank you for letting us use the cottage - if you ever decide to sell - let me know ☺️ Next time we’d just like to book better weather too !!  (Although it didn’t rain).

We loved our stay here, what a lovely place in a very picturesque village, we’re definitely coming back! Parking was easy, we have a massive car but there was plenty of room in the gated parking area - you’d comfortably get 2 cars in there.  The house was more spacious than we thought from the outside. It’s a very homely place with far more furnishings than your standard air bnb. There are some basic bits that need a bit of attention (like the light in the extractor fan or the battery in the clock) but nothing that effected our very pleasant stay. The large bedroom is modern and spacious, which possibly emphasised the somewhat dated bathroom next to the room, but everything worked perfectly and was clean so it didn’t bother us. The gated garden is not directly accessible from the house, you have to go out the front door and round the side to use it, but we enjoyed sitting out there a few times whilst the dog played on the lawn. Overall a great place and highly recommended!

The cottage was nice and spacious in a lovely village  We enjoyed our stay but this cottage isn’t child friendly for children under 5 years old I would say due to steep stairs and different levels between the living room and kitchen area and also the garden had steps we had a 4 year old with us  a 19 month old and a 5 month old so was a bit difficult at times

The place is lovely and really enjoyed our stay. Hutton le Hole is a great little village too - we especially enjoyed the Ryedale folk museum.

Charming cottage in idyllic village with plenty of space and lots to do.  Only thing for us not being from Europe was figuring out how to consistently heat the home.  Was fine most of the time but sometimes a bit of a struggle.

Beautiful cottage in a lovely part of the country. Great base for visits to Whitby, Sandsend etc. We would stay again.

Had some problems ie the overflowing bins which stank and woodlice invading an upstairs bedroom and bed, wonky dining chairs and torn seat on one - complaints not promptly especially the bins which we felt constiuted a health hazard which the local authority should be aware of. The kitchen is awkward and narrow and apart from the fridge and freezer there was no cupboard space to store food. Downstairs bedroom although nicely furnished we had light streaming in at sunrise through the 2 uncovered windows. Need blind on the little window and the Velux window.

Really beautiful property in a fantastic location.

The location was stunning and the place was just perfect for us. The beds were super comfortable and the lounge super cosy. To be able to build a fire was just glorious.  Dirty pans in the oven, and only one dishwasher tablet and a squirt left of washing up liquid. Also linked - but not Greengate Cottage's fault - is paying an admin fee on top of the damage deposit and still won't see that getting processed until a week after I get back and then it takes several working days. It's 2023 and money is transferred quickly and for free. Give me my deposit back quicker, please.

the location was excellent  needs a deep clean , lots of cobwebs and dust , the shower was un useable full of mould. Very cold , we had no hot water or heating on the second night we reported it but no body came to fix until 1/2 before we checked out the following morning!! not ok with 2 young children and -4 in the evening / no wood was left for fires had to drive and buy our own £26 ! Dog hairs and lots of dust pretty grim really not impressed at all

The property was great and the location was beautiful and peaceful. We had 5 adults, 2 children and a dog, and felt like there was plenty of room for us all. It was helpful to have private parking and we managed to fit three cars in the parking area, which was really helpful. We did have an issue where a few of the bedroom doors didn’t fully shut/lock properly, as some of the fittings were a little bent. This made it difficult when trying to keep the dog out of the bedrooms! The bathrooms were good and small toiletries provided, but no hand soap given in any of the toilets. We did however love our stay, would definitely stay again if we were coming back to the area.

The only issue was that there was a large step between the down stairs bedroom and entrance hall to the kitchen which a member of the family with mobility problems found difficult. This was not made clear in the description.   Otherwise a beautiful cottage

Just home after a lovely family holiday to Greengate Cottage. We’ve been coming to Yorkshire for many years now and this cottage did not disappoint! There were 6 of us, so the two bathrooms and toilets were great. Lots of space and the rooms are lovely, beds very comfy. I especially loved the little library in the lounge - I think I got through about 5 books and could have kept going! We made great use of the fire too.   The pub in the village (The Crown) is well worth a visit. Very cosy, lovely landlord and absolutely delicious food (decently priced too). We will definitely go back there when we come back to Yorkshire.  Highly recommend for a relaxing stay in the Yorkshire countryside! Host and Stay were great at communicating and received very quick replies to any queries.

The Greengate cottage was an absolute delight. The location was amazing and all the amenities we could have needed were at our disposal. The charm of this lovely home was beyond our expectations. We will return as soon as humanly possible!

Generous sized and well decorated property in beautiful location. Private parking and well equipped. Linen and towels provided as well as toilet roll and travel size toiletries. Quick and simple communication with the agent.

We had a wonderful stay at Gateside Cottage!  It was very welcoming, clean and comfortable.  They had everything that we needed with a well equipped kitchen and lots of space whether it was to find a quiet corner to read a book or a large dining table to play games at!  (watch your head in the doorways though, if you are tall!) The village is very quiet and we had a lovely meal at The Crown where the staff were very welcoming and helpful.   We didn't have any communication with the owners but the staff at Host and Stay were very helpful and responded promptly to any queries we had.  The downstairs bathroom shower was broken though, so impossible to use, but hopefully that will be fixed for the next guests to make everything perfect! If we are looking to stay in this area again I would definitely book in for another stay.

We had an amazing stay at Greengate cottage. Lovely village location.  The master bedroom was definitely the highlight - very nicely done and felt like a hotel room! Check in and out was super easy too.

Very spacious and well equipped cottage in a beautiful, quaint village. Lovely garden with tables and chairs. The beds are really comfortable and facilities are all in working order. If you're visiting with young children, you may want to take some travel  black out blinds for the windows but we made do with sheets and towels. The Crown pub in the village is gorgeous for Sunday lunch. Location great for exploring North Yorkshire and costal town Scarborough.

Lovely spacious characterful cottage in a beautiful location. Comfy beds, good bed linen and bath towels. Large downstairs bedroom would be ideal for anyone with mobility issues. Super local pub and great bacon rolls for breakfast from the local cafe! We had a lovely four night stay. Would definitely recommend.

Amazing location - we are a large group of 20-23 year olds and we had the best weekend!  Would highly recommend for a walking weekend/ relaxing weekend away. Gorgeous accommodation with everything you need. Couldn’t recommend enough.

A lovely, well presented house that is perfect for a getaway with a bigger group. The house has 4 large bedrooms that are clean, nicely decorated and have very comfy beds. The house has a good-sized kitchen, and 2 bathrooms (1 with bath and shower and 1 with a shower), as well as an additional toilet on the ground floor. The lounge was great for socializing and playing games, with plenty of sofas and chairs and a lovely fire. The house is in the middle of the picturesque village Hutton-le-hole. The village has a great pub and a really nice deli, which is open 9-5 on Saturday and Sunday. Also lots of great walks to do in the local area! Would definitely recommend and would have no hesitation to book the house again. One slight issue we had was that there is a verification process involved when booking (which you have to do even if already verified on Airbnb). The process was a bit of a faff (didn't work too smoothly on my phone) but the customer service team of the hosts were very responsive and sorted the verification process for me, so don't let that put you off.

A beautiful cottage, full of character in the perfect location. The picture-postcard North Yorkshire village was a real joy to meander, the pub was excellent & star gazing was unforgettable. Would absolutely recommend !

The cottage is absolutely beautiful, and has all the home from home comforts. Very good with communication, we had a problem whilst there with a window, but they responded really quickly. The neighbour is grumpy! Stay out of his way. But the surrounding area is stunning. I would certainly stay again. There is a co op nearby for all food bits, only 8 minutes drive. WiFi is strong. No signal otherwise. We needed to make an emergency call so used the landline. Really good touch! Beautiful place, you won’t regret booking.

Amazing cottage in a beautiful location, the house and kitchen was well equipped for the 8 of us and we all loved how comfy the beds were. The Crown pub was a lovely place to go to and I would recommend to everyone to stay here! Thoroughly enjoyed our New Years holiday and celebrations!

Lovely cottage in fab location, communication was great. Good value for money. The pub in the village are really friendly and the food was delicious, bonus is its within walking distance.we will definitely be back.

What a find, such a lovely cottage in a beautiful village. Ideal for a family get together. Everything was catered for.  The cottage was so welcoming and the bedrooms were a dream. Would defiantly recommend it and definitely hope to be back. Jane and family.

Great stay with friends or family, pub serves lovely meals and it’s a great location to explore the area.  We had great weather and made use of the back garden to the rear of the property. Great for family reunions.

We had a great stay in a beautiful house in a fantastic village. There is loads to do in the village itself (great pub, fantastic museum, some nice independent shops, walks straight onto the moors through the town) and round about (lots of interesting places within a 15 minute drive).  The house itself was great and literally a stone's throw from the pub. We will definitely be back.

Lovely house in a lovely place, would definitely recommend to someone looking to stay in the area! Only suggestion would be an eye mask or thicker curtains for those who’d like a lie in.

A lovely, characterful house perfect for a larger group - our 4 year old was delighted that he could go up one staircase and back down another, and loved all the kids’ books and boules for the sunny little garden. The ground floor bedroom and walk-in shower were great for an elderly member of our group with mobility issues (the massive step down into the kitchen area less so! Upstairs definitely a no-go for anyone unsure on their feet). Hutton-le-hole is a picture perfect place in a great location for Helmsley and the North Yorkshire Moors. Do try the very accommodating ‘Barn Tea Rooms’ in the village and we can recommend the afternoon tea at the Middleton Tea Parlour down the road towards Pickering! Overall highly recommended.

Greengate cottage is a lovely property right in the heart of idyllic hutton-le-hole. We visited as 5 adults and had plenty of room. It’s very homely and the host always got back to us very quickly with any queries we had. Nice pub in the village and can do a good walk from the cottage to Lastingham and back with another pub stop off if desired! We were lucky with gorgeous weather in October and even managed to make use of the little outdoor seating area at the front one lunch time.

This cottage is amazing - a home from home with everything you need to enjoy a break in a stunning location. It's just what you imagine a stay in a Yorkshire cottage should be. A cottage which is quirky with all the amenities you will need for a family getaway. It's ideally situated to explore the Yorkshire countryside and also trips to a variety of coastal places.
