The Space
Red Brick Barn is a beautiful detached property packed with character. Inside you’ll find a living room complete with a log fire, two double ensuite bedrooms, an open plan kitchen diner and outstanding panoramic views of the countryside.

With low ceilings and a warm colour palette, the living room is homely and snug. Relax on the large, corner sofa with a good book or play games with your loved ones. As it gets colder outside, fire up the log burner and enjoy a cosy night in. Please note all logs are provided for your stay. Traditional in style, the space also includes a wooden dresser, benches and side table.

Head through the archway and you’ll find the open plan kitchen diner. With light coloured walls and mint green tiles, the kitchen has a bright and airy feel. Wooden cabinets and a Belfast sink add a country style which fits perfectly with the nature of the barn. Fully equipped for all self-catering staycations, you’ll have access to an oven, hob, toaster and kettle during your stay.

Ideal for socialising, the open plan kitchen diner allows your guests to gather and chat whilst others cook. With a round wooden table and four chairs, there is ample space for your party to enjoy meals together. Please note a highchair is also provided for little ones.

Also located on the ground floor is a spacious WC.

Outside you’ll find a gravelled area with outdoor furniture and incredible views of the countryside. A real treat, this outside space is an added luxury. You can enjoy al fresco dining with your party and drinks outside as the evening draws near. There is also a fire outside in the seating area so you can enjoy this space all year round.

You’ll enjoy your sleep at Red Brick Barn as both double beds feature crisp white linens and plush bedding. Please note one bedroom can be made up as a twin if this is more suitable for your stay.

Each bedroom has a clean and modern en suite with a walk in shower, WC and basin.

Lots of wildlife around accommodation
Friendly sheep,ducks and hens
Very accommodating for the dogs.
Walks from the front door.
Quite close to attractions and history of the area.
Rain ? ?
Take wellies if rain forecast

Cosy barn conversion in a beautiful rural location. Fantastic view over the valley and a short drive to all the local beauty spots. Owner made us feel very welcome.

This is the most idyllic and peaceful place to stay and worth the drive! We were blessed with blue skies and sunshine but regardless of the weather the cottage was lovely, heated up very quickly with the wood burner on and had everything we needed. We will definitely visit again, next time for longer

Highly recommend nice and cozy place

This was our second stay with Andrew - the house and it's surroundings were as lovely as we remembered.
The weather wasn't particularly kind to us but what better excuse to snuggle down in front of the wood burner with a good book and a warming glass of something.
There's plenty of places to explore nearby when you do head out and I would thoroughly recommend this place for anyone just wanting to get away from it all.

Andrew was fantastic. Lovely house and a well needed break from city life.

Fabulous location and wonderful host. Andrew is lovely- definitely the best host we’ve had! We really enjoyed our long weekend (and so did our pooch). Would stay again.

A small but very peaceful little cabin in the north of England. It’s on a small farm near Roman ruins. There’s no better place to get away from the rush of life!

location was great, lovely scenery. Really nice to have the animals on the farm wandering around - chickens, sheep, ducks.
the tiled shower (electric) in one of the bathrooms - the tiles need re-grouting/replaced asap. The solid wood worktop around the sink in the kitchen needs sanded down and re-waxed/varnished, it was discoloured and not in great condition which was a shame.

The Red Brick Barn is a great little place, providing real “home from home” comforts, very clean, with exceptionally comfortable beds. (Best sleep in months!!)We went for a couple of days as an escape from the day to day pressures that crop up from time to time and it was a great place to unwind and is very reasonably priced. A real gem in a beautiful part of the world!! Andrew is a great host and very attentive without being intrusive. Thanks again Peter & Family (inc Brillo)

Location is very nice countryside views quite
Nice old barn conversion

Very good

The cottage is in a fabulous location, with a very different way of life, but easy to travel to the east coast or the Lake District in about an hour. The cottage is comfortable and reasonably well equipped.
A larger fridge with freezer compartment would have been a useful upgrade but this is a minor point,

Lovely cosy property in a beautiful setting. We were very unlucky with the weather but it was still a great place to relax for the weekend. The host was lovely and brought us fresh chicken and a goose egg. incredible views!
N/A

Beautiful location if you love being away from it all. We loved the field in front of the barn and the view.

Rural location, plenty off farm animals, nice and quiet.
Excellent views although the windows in the barn are on the wrong side would have had brilliant views from the living room possibly a planning issue.
Plenty off books and board games supplied.
Nice log burner make sure you take extra logs can be chilly off an evening.
2 bathrooms and a toilet downstairs.
Nice court yard / garden to the side with picnic table so you can enjoy the views can be a bit windswept though.
One bedroom floors very creaky and doors wouldn't shut properly.
No tv but has good WiFi so take a laptop or similar if you need to something to watch.
No windows over looking the views, possibly planning issue shame.

Great place, middle of nowhere which was incredible!

Andrew’s place is brilliant- remote and tucked away in a farm well away from the noise. It was a great and refreshing getaway. Farm fresh eggs, waking up to the songs of birds and the blessing of sheep-getaways don’t get better than this.

Skønt sted - meget smukt og Andrew er meget gæstfri

The location of the property was beautiful with ducks and chickens walking around, there was a large field just outside where I could let my dog roam.
The beds were clean but I felt that carpets hadn’t been hoovered, there were cleaning products for us to give the place a wipe down ourselves.

A very peaceful and scenic location- loved waking up to the sheep, chickens and ducks! Really friendly hosts, lots of stunning walks nearby and other attractions- enjoyed cosy evenings with the wood burner, owls hooting and fabulous starry skies!

Cute cozy cottage.

Andrew was incredibly hospitable and welcoming, and the barn was in the perfect location up on the hillside in a stunning part of the country. So quiet and incredible views.....beautiful starlit skies at night and we were treated to lovely sunlit skies in the daytime too, even in the middle of November! Ideally placed to enjoy the dramatic landscapes of the area. We were meeting up with friends, and there was plenty of space for the four of us and our dogs to get together, with incredible walks from the door and a very cosy lounge with powerful wood burner to come back to at the end of the day. Exactly what we needed.

We had a lovely stay at Redbrick cottage. Communication from Andrew was great, especially directing us to a place on his land where we could wild swim!

Tremendous stay.
Would love to return.
Cozy and stunning surroundings.

Thank you.

Very good

We really enjoyed our stay here - the barn is very quiet and the little courtyard where we sat and watched the sunset was very special and private. Lovely place to stay to explore the surrounding countryside

Red Brick Barn was an amazing place to come and retreat. My friend and I were on a trip to do some writing and Andrew was super accommodating / enthusiastic about our creativity, which made everything super special and focused us way more. Thank you!

We are just back from a very last minute weekend away. Andrew was very accommodating and made us feel welcome in our home from home.
The Red Brick Barn is roomy and cosy, and set in a quiet, peaceful location with amazing views of the valley. It really is a walkers paradise, ideal for dog walking or simply a lazy, peaceful few days away.
The kitchen is well equipped with everything you would need for cooking pretty much any meal. The gardens are so pretty with a range of colourful plants, plus there are the resident ducks and chickens about....if your lucky you may just find some eggs which Andrew was insistent we keep if we find. There is a seating area at the side of the barn with a fire pit which got used throughout our stay.
If you want lots of shops, pubs and restaurants nearby, this isn't the place for you, however the location means it is a great place for being able to get out and explore wild county Durham. All in all, we had a very good experience, loved the barn and the surroundings, Andrew was great throughout and I have no hesitation in saying we will be back in the future.

Lovely stay, unfortunately to short

We had a great stay at Andrew’s place - stunning location and scenery and a lovely cosy welcome. Dog friendly - would recommend!

This is a fabulous place. Weardale is so pretty and this secluded little part of it is stunning. The welcome could not have been more welcoming. The house is a wonderful place for a quiet retreat. Great walking, lovely pubs around and lots of local history. Highly recommended!!!

Amazing location, walks from the front door, nature and birds everywhere: lapwings, curlews, swallows, barn owls... Free range hens (and eggs), electricity from the wind, cosy wood burning fire. Helpful, approachable hosts, and genuinely dog friendly. Comfortable bed. We were able to really relax here.

A lovely retreat set in beautiful country side. WH Auden countryside at its best.

The dogs loved the area for walks and runs.

Totally snug and warm with the wood burner heating the whole house.

Lovely secluded area to sit and soak in the views and the warmth of the sun

Had a wonderful stay here. The house was very comfortable and clean, loved the big log burner in the lounge. Best thing is the stunning location, can't begin to describe how beautiful the area is.

Great place to stay. Very remote with limited phone signal (02) but great WiFi in the accommodation. No TV but after lovely long walks in Weardale it wasn’t a priority. Bird sanctuary with no access for dogs at the rear of the property but plenty of walking elsewhere. Lovely to see the lambs and enjoy sights of lapwings. On a clear night we saw so many stars it was incredible. Not to far to drive to Hamsterley Forest and other places such as High Force. We were lucky with the weather but if it was cold we could have sat comfortably with a roaring fire. Perfect place for nature lovers, bird watchers and walkers.

Lovely cottage to stay in, lots of walks nearby and just close enough to Durham for a day trip in. Recommended!

We had a great weekend at the red brick barn with our 2 labradors. Great location, easy access to good walks with plenty of opportunity for the dogs to be off lead.
The barn itself is comfortable yet simple, and was everything we were looking for including a well equipped kitchen and comfy bed. The log burner was good to have although a decent effort required to keep temperatures up inside with outside hovering around 0°C.
Andrew and family were great hosts who were very friendly and nice to chat to, we would happily go back anytime.

If you're looking for a rustic, off-the-beaten-track, rural experience, look no further than the Red Brick Barn. We had a lovely week in October despite mixed weather, totally away from it all. You have to be prepared to get your hands dirty in order to get the wood-fired central heating and hot water going every morning (though there is also an electric shower and heater) but once things are going, it can get pretty toasty, particularly if you position the electric heater in the kitchen.

Andrew and Jane are marvellous hosts with lots of recommendations (the pub/hotel in Blanchland is definitely worth a visit) and they were incredibly helpful when our van got stuck in a layby on the top of a hill - Andrew arranged the rescue, delivered by a kind local farmer!

Lovely corner of the world, well worth a visit. Thank you.

Peaceful, stunning views, cosy, with helpful and approachable hosts. No tv which we like. We loved the chickens wandering about, the hosts even gave us a few eggs. Didn’t use our sat nav to get there, the directions given by the hosts are spot on and easy to follow. It is a great base if you like walking as there are quite a few walks of varying difficulty within a short drive.

Rustic cottage set in stunning surroundings, to which you have access, thanks to Andrew owning the immediate surrounding land. Andrew is friendly and helpful; as are 2 of his dogs. It was great picking our own fresh eggs each day. The log fire is for heating and hot water, but if you’re caught a bit short there’s always the boost button It was nice having both bedrooms en suite as well as a toilet downstairs. The mattresses weren’t comfortable unfortunately due to the springs and grooves in them. Sadly the Rookhope Inn is now closed so the closest pub is the Cross Keys; the closest amenities are in Stanhope. The property, due to its awesome location, is at the end of a very bumpy track with plenty of potholes (approx 0.5 mile/2 minutes’ driving). The water runs on a pump so make sure you don’t want to chat downstairs if someone is having a shower (you won’t hear each other ). All in all a lovely stay. We would’ve liked to have taken advantage of the hot tub but just couldn’t justify £50 for it. Keep your eyes peeled for the tablet next to the front door - the instructions for things are on there

The photographs don’t do either the interior of the barn or the views justice. A really cosy and comfortable place to stay to escape from the real world, with views that you can lose yourself in. Sheep, chicken, ducks, geese, cows, wild grouse, bats and a beautiful owl, all on your doorstep. Plenty of walks from the property and we’d recommend the use of the hosts hot tub if you get the chance. Friendly (& obedient) neighbouring dogs and great hosts. We were made to feel welcome even before we’d left home. Can’t recommend it enough.

On the site it states 5 star cleanliness and extra covid cleaning, we were asked to check in an hour late to enable them to complete cleaning, which wasn't a problem.
On arrival we looked around the cottage and virtually every room had not been cleaned with the exception of the bathrooms. There were large amounts of dust on wardrobes, chairs, curtains and doors. The cooker internally and externally wasn't cleaned. Fridge and sink hadn't been cleaned.
Contacted the owner who agreed the cleanliness was not acceptable and arranged for the cleaners to go in next day. This they did, but needed a deep clean not just a clean.
One of our friends suffers from asthma and had problems all week due to dust.
We had travelled 7.5 hrs to get there had we lived closer we would have gone back home.
We did got offered a sum of money to not give a bad review, but I use other people's reviews to decide where to stay, so we declined it.

Beautiful views and a comfortable stay.

We had such a wonderful week at Red Brick Barn! The place has everything you need including the most amazing views, and is really well placed for some fab walks. Andrew couldn’t have been more welcoming to us all, including our dog who arguably had the best week of us all, being able to run around and play with his dogs! Thank you again for such a good stay!

Brilliant communication and directions from our host Andrew, leading onto a brilliant, super perfect escape for a few days. The accommodation was spotless, bright, airy, with unspoilt views across the valley. Just so peaceful. We were spoilt with the weather but the vast night sky and abundance of stars stole the show. It
Is so peaceful with endless fields to wonder through and explore. Can’t recommend a stay enough.

We all enjoyed our stay at The Red Brick Barn. The cottage is in a very peaceful setting not far from the owners' cottage and the view from the little seating area to the side is absolutely glorious. We loved watching the sheep, ducks and rabbits and Andrew kindly supplied us with eggs. This is a beautiful part of the country and there are lovely views driving or walking locally. The cottage is out in the countryside at the end of a long lane but clear instructions are provided.

The cottage is in a remote place but with good road links to other areas. Good size and clean throughout.
There are a huge variety of animals about including their own (which are friendly and free roaming). Lots of amazing birds on the bird feeder and we saw red kite, variety of owls swooping across the fields (including a fly by right beside the window of a beautiful barn owl). Very peaceful. We werent blessed with good weather but we can see that on a clear night the stars would be incredible.
Andrew kept in contact and was a lovely host.

Beautiful place to stay. Stunning scenery, plenty of walks to go on straight from the door step. Pluse local attractions. Close enough Durham for a day trip. All round great place to stay.

The Red Barn is a lovely place for a remote country getaway. The place has all the essentials and we were blessed with great weather so spent a lot of time outside enjoying the views. It's also great that both bedrooms have their own ensuite. Andrew and his wife were fabulous hosts and very helpful with walks and pub recommendation I would definitely recommend as a country getaway!

Lovely cosy cottage in a fantastic area. Perfect base to enjoy the countryside

We had a great week staying here. It is a very remote location (at the end of a long unmade road, so not appropriate for all cars) and the views from the garden are fantastic. It should be noted that the views from inside the house are not particularly great as there are no windows facing out towards the valley. But it is peaceful and quiet, and we enjoyed the log fire and the eggs from the very friendly chickens.

Quiet and peaceful setting with fantastic views over the moors

Great location, with very comfortable accommodation, nice place to get away for a short break, there are plenty of walks and places to visit in the surrounding area, Andrew welcomed us when we arrived and made us feel at home, we would recommend Red Brick Barn to anyone who wants a peaceful break in the country.

The Red Barn is a great rural retreat. Great location for exploring the Wear Valley and North Penines. There are amazing views and some stunning walks in the local area. Andrew is a warm and welcoming host and he was very helpful in getting our fire started on the first evening and recommending good walks in the area. We would definitely stay again.

A place to really get away from urban life. We really enjoyed the experience of being dependent on the fire for heating - despite being August we needed it! Well organised space with very good hosts.

Remote and peaceful with the added benefit of friendly chickens! Host was lovely. Would recommend.

If you want stay at a place that is accessible yet remote and have a comfortable stay where you can disconnect or choose to be active outdoors, look no further.

Beautiful location and and very responsive hosts. We would have loved to stay longer

Wonderful place. Fantastic opportunities to walk directly from the doorstep. Friendly hosts (with the cutest dogs!). Thank you for such an amazing holiday, we will be back!

Gorgeous little barn in a most astonishingly beautiful area

Just got back from a three night stay here with two kids and a dog. If you are looking for a cosy rural retreat then this is the place. The weather was soo wet and windy that we spent a lot of time cabined up with the real fire roaring, playing bored games, reading and drawing. The kids loved going out on the farm and feeding the chickens, ducks and goose. It was just what we all needed. The footpath networks looked amazing in the area so we can't wait to go back when the weather isn't quite as bad.

Beautiful location and a nice home

Beautiful tranquil location. Great hosts.

Our toddler loved feeding the dogs, hens and ducks who are very friendly and sociable. Spot, one of the dogs, is a dab hand at leading you through the fields and public path to the pub in the village so you don't have to take the car :-)

Great location to get away from the hustle and bustle for a few days. No TV but plenty of jigsaws and games to keep your party happy. There is also WiFi if you have a teenager who can't bear to be away from social media!

Would definitely stay again.

Lieu charmant et cosy en pleine nature, très agréable pour se ressourcer et se promener !

Lovely, cosy barn conversion. Plenty of space for us and our young kids. Basic but well equipped - no microwave, washing machine etc. Nice to not have a TV! Andrew and Jane were on holiday so their friend John met us and was there to answer any questions. He was an excellent host. The barn is remote, but there's loads to do within an hours drive. The boys loved looking for eggs!

This is a great, secluded location in the middle of some stunning countryside. You will be made to feel at home in this cosy, homely location and if you like farm animals roaming freely around (and two very lovely dogs!) then you will be in heaven. The house was exactly as described, very comfortable with all the amenities you need. Lovely trip and we will likely be back.

Absolutely lovely place - everything you could want as a space to get away from normal life and enjoy amazing nature

The hosts are great, we didn’t arrive until 12:30am but they stayed up just to welcome us. Such a friendly and beautiful place, we all loved it, especially the dogs! Loads of room to relax, play and explore. The views are incredible and we could have stayed there forever. We didn’t want to go home. Thank you!

An awesome little barn, set in a fantastic location. Great communication and excellent check in. The barn has a lovely feel to it, and we particularly enjoyed the kitchen space, and sitting round the big table. Also, loved the log burner. A great place to stay.... Thank you Andrew and Jane, and thanks to John for the check in.

Another cracking weekend despite the weather in the Red Barn. The wood stove was ready for our arrival which was great so thanks again.

A cosy hideaway in one of the most scenic parts of the North. Friendly hosts and so are their animals . We would recommend the Red Brick Barn especially if enjoy walking or just want to get away from it all.

Great, quiet accommodation, surrounded by countryside with lots of mining heritage to explore.

We stayed at Andrew's Red Brick Barn over a bank holiday weekend, in a party of four adults and a dog. Everyone enjoyed the time at the barn – it felt like a real slice of life on a Cumbrian farm and was a chance to spend time in a calm, tranquil environment in beautiful countryside.

Andrew's communication and directions were excellent, and he gave us a warm welcome on arrival (as did his three dogs). The barn itself is well equipped with log burner (coal and wood kindly supplied by Andrew), cosy sitting room, kitchen and two en suite double bedrooms. We found the place has plenty of space for four adults and a large dog to be comfortable. Around you on the farm you will see sheep, geese and chickens, which added to the experience for us.

All in all we had a great weekend and I would recommend this place to friends, as well as happily staying myself in future if the opportunity arose.

This cottage is perfect for a quiet get away. It's up a farm track and surrounded by beautiful country side. The host family (who live next door) are very helpful.

Andrew and Jane communicated promptly and accurately, and their place has the perfect sense of 'remoteness' we were looking for, and it didn't matter in which direction we went, the roads and country lanes took us through gorgeous countryside to equally gorgeous destinations.

Great place with wonderful views of the surrounding country. V easy to find with Barnard Castle ans Stanhope being useful places for shops. The barn is truly a get away from it all but very comfortable. The hosts are very friendly and helpful - in fact the nearby whole village is - whom you can meet in the inn. You'll not be short of company. Great place in the wilderness.

A very clean and comfortable house. The best feature on a cold Easter weekend was definitely the stove which was easy to light and kept the house cosy and warm. We appreciated the dramatic views and the almost-silence (we didn't mind the very sociable cockerel). A great place for a break away from civilisation, or as a base for walking across wonderful Weardale and Teesdale.

We had such a lovely stay at the barn. Our hosts were really welcoming and friendly, really efficient in sending information. The barn was cosy and comfortable, it has a loved, homely feeling about it. We loved that there was no phone signal or TV, but if that's not for you, I shouldn't bother to go.

Red brick is the perfect "get away from it all" place. The location is pretty remote and the views are stunning. The cottage is very cosy and with lots to do and see locally the kids didn't miss the TV! Plenty of puzzles, games and a fab wood burner! A brilliant place to relax and unwind!

A lovely warm inviting open fire awaited us on our arrival. The cottage was warm, cosy, with a shower and a bath and 2 double beds. We have stayed there twice. The owners daughter even gave us a lift to the local pub and back!

This is such a great place to stay, we will definitely be back! The cottage itself was really nice with everything we needed. It was great to arrive to find the stove lit and Andrew there to welcome us. The beds were incredibly comfy (good night's sleep guaranteed!), and we loved waking up to the sound of the geese, ducks and chickens. Being able to feed the animals was an extra bonus, and our two year old loved the wind turbine too. Andrew and Jane could not have done more to make us feel at home and were brilliant hosts. We are already thinking about coming back to explore more of the local area and would love to stay here again!

Very welcoming and pleasant hosts. Very helpful with directions and tips and helps as needed.
V good venue for able bodied guests looking to stay mostly 'off grid' in a remote, ruggedly beautiful location.
