Property Details

The Space
Opened in July 2021, Captain’s Retreat offers a flexible living space and has been expertly designed to provide the perfect luxury holiday home in Whitby.

The heart of Captain’s Retreat is the open-plan living and kitchen area on the top floor. A wonderfully bright and spacious area to enjoy special moments with your family and friends, you’ll find French doors that open out onto a juliet balcony which enjoys the sun for much of the day, allowing the outside to come inside. Whether you are sitting back in front of the top of the range Samsung TV or challenging your family to a game of backgammon, you will enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Spa Well Court.

The kitchen is fully equipped to make the most of your self-catering stay, including the added bonus of a Nespresso machine for that much-needed coffee in the morning before starting your day!

There is also a cosy dining area where you can enjoy meals with your loved ones in comfort.

There are three bedrooms in Captain’s Retreat, all featuring high-end beds and plush bedding for a first-class sleep.

The main king size bedroom is on the ground floor and is a lovely haven for relaxing.

Head to the first floor and you’ll find the second king size bedroom. Offering a little piece of luxury, the room can also be made up as a twin if requested upon booking.

The third bedroom is home to twin bunk beds, making this room particularly suitable for children and teenagers.

There is both a bathroom and a separate shower room at Captain’s Retreat. With this in mind, there is no need for arguments over who is getting ready first during your seaside getaway.

Outside, the landscaped garden wraps around the house and catches much of the sun throughout the day.

Host & Stay are committed to our owners that their homes are protected during guest bookings. For this reason, we require all our guests to transfer a Damage Deposit (refundable, subject to an administration charge) or, to purchase an Accidental Damage Waiver which will cover you for up to £500.00 of accidental damage during your stay.

Should you manage to tear yourself away from your luxury accommodation, you will enjoy the fabulous location of Captain’s Retreat. You are moments from Captain Cook’s Endeavour and the hustle and bustle of Whitby Harbour. The area is famous for the quality of its fish and chip restaurants, where you can sample the local catch of the day.

Continue to explore by crossing the swing bridge, built-in 1908 to connect the East and West sides of the town, passing by enticing Whitby Jet jewellery shops, and you will soon start your ascent towards the Abbey.

Step outside of Whitby, and you’ll uncover a haven of woodland and moorland. Whitby forms part of the North York Moors National Park, so it’s the perfect place for long walks and discovering new pastures.

Getting Around
Captain’s Retreat is located in the centre of Whitby, so the town can easily be explored on foot.

Whitby train station is just a short walk away, so villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast can easily be reached via rail. There’s also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station.

There are plenty of bus routes throughout Whitby. Hop on the X4, and you can visit beautiful coastal villages like Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Staithes. The X93 travels along the coast to Scarborough. Finally, the 95 route features plenty of quaint villages, such as Grosmont and Lealholm.

Nice location, quiet area

Everything was good

Location was excellent and bonus with a parking space

The mattress on one of the double beds was very lumpy I think the springs had gone. A lot of steps up to the property.

Modern, clean town house in the centre of Whitby.
Excellent parking.

Need curtains in bedrooms as blinds did not block outside light.

Very close to the centre of Whitby.

Some lack of amenities such as no oven gloves and one kitchen towel.

Location, Car charger

Bady stained entrance hall carpet, No shower mat downstairs, no place for toiletries, no storage place for food, table was wonky, not enough cutlery, cheap and nasty rusting toilet paper holders and bins. General cleanliness, dusty skirtings and greasy filthy kitchen cupboard tops. No wastepaper bins. Stained chair in lounge. Dining table and chairs were of very poor quality.

Location of the property is superb & it was modern & clean. Has its own parking space which is a bonus in Whitby

Lots of steps up to the property. The communal area outside and around the property are not well kept and don’t reflect the standard of the accommodation. This however may be beyond the control of the accommodation owner.

Really smart, well-decorated and comfortable, a stone's throw from the main streets of Whitby, fast host response, clear instructions given via an app, lovely French doors on the top floor living room, good view of the abbey from the landing window, good water pressure, strong wifi connection, a perfect place to get some work done on my laptop.

I would have preferred one big mattress for the double bed but honestly nitpicking!

The facilities where lovely, clean, beautifully furnished and in an amazing location. There’s a lovely view from the property. Not suitable for anyone who can’t walk up stairs very well.

N/A

Unfortunately l didn’t realise how many steps up to the property Need to highlight more info

Lovely property for 5 adults and a small do. Booked this one as had EV charger and that worked really well, nice and quick charge.
Although a lot of similar houses in a small area it was quite peaceful and for us. The car park was ok , if a bit tight for todays bigger cars.
The house was nicely furnished and good TV options during some rainy days!

Great location and property decoration was very good

The cleanliness of property was not a high standard

This self contained property is in outstanding condition, exceptionally clean and tastefully decorated.
Very spacious and with three bedrooms and two shower/bathrooms is ideal for one large or two families sharing.
Very close to centre, harbour and beach so excellent place to stay.

I am a reasonably fit and well 62 year old but I struggled with the access to this property. Maybe an oversight of mine when booking.
A short walk uphill and then a steep slope to the car park. Lots of very steep steps to the apartment and then of course, two flights of stairs to the kitchen/lounge which is rightfully sited on the top floor. Very attractive and just the way it is but I don't recall it being advertised much when we booked.
You must be fit and well to stay here and certainly not suitable for many disabled people.

Great house great location.

The location, the view, the cleanliness and most definitely the pillows! Comfiest pillows ever.

it was lovely and clean, welcoming and spacious.

not enough cupboard space in kitchen, no lightbulb for the lamp in living area, ran out of toilet paper.

The place we (eventually) stayed in, at Whitby, was excellent in all respects. However, this did not fully compensate for the place we booked (in Stokesley) which was cancelled at 5 hours notice whilst we were travelling up. This caused us a number of inconveniences - 1 and a half hours in a motorway service station whilst we arranged a suitable alternative;a 90 minute round trip on the first evening to meet up with the pre-booked food delivery at the original venue; another 90 minute round trip on day 2 to attend the pre-booked football match which was an integral part of the weekend; also we were unable to meet up as planned with family members who live close to the original venue. All very frustrating, but we did make the most of a bad job. We also appreciated the help of Bethany at Host & Stay in arranging the last minute alternative accommodation.
We never really found out the precise reason why the first accommodation was cancelled at such short notice - just ‘damage’.

Great location, good modern facilities, warm, clean, comfortable, great views, family friendly, catered well for dogs

Lack of blinds / privacy in living room, not much storage in kitchen, limited outside area

location and modern and there was some good basic supplies

there was a lot of steps up to the house then a lot of stairs. the patio was tiny.

N/A

Warned about the 62 stairs from the car park to the kitchen/living area.
Main bedroom needs curtains

Self contained apartment

All excellent!

Amazing Stay!!! The house is big and clean with full-equiped housing tools and furnitures. The location is also near the bus and train station. Highly Recommend!

Great location warm and friendly

Maybe another parking bay but understand space is at a premium

The property is very well kept and spotless. The beds are very comfortable and the 2 bathrooms are a good size.

The kitchen is well equipped though a bit short on cutlery.
The only downside for us was the number of stairs to climb to get into the property. A member of our party is 91 and it was very tiring for her.

A great place to stay, we would recommend.

The captains retreat was the perfect location for us and an absolute bonus that it allowed dogs!
The bed were comfy, set up of the house was great and we made wholesome memories there.

location was perfect, stylish modern house with everything you need , home from home really ?

on initial arrival it seemed okay , but later noticed the dust on stairwells and grubby carpet in hallway and a sock under the bunk beds !

Lovely property great central location

Good location for central Whitby. Very modern and spacious accommodation.

The back door did not open leaving us unable to access the outdoor space throughout our stay.

A modern house in a very good position in Whitby. Perfect for a group of friends or small family.

Parking was very tight. We arrived at the same time as two other families and it was quite hard getting into our space. Also, the property is over three flights of stairs and is accessed by thirty six steps, so would be unsuitable for anyone with limited mobility.
There were very limited cleaning products for us to use ( not even a disposable dish cloth or a dishwasher tablet) and only one tea towel. We were only there for two nights so didn't bring any with us. Had we known, we would have.

The property was in a good location was furnished really well suited our family of teenagers. loved the view out of the landing window beds were comfortable

The property wasn’t overly clean the steps up to the property would be a problem if you have a lot of luggage and young children we only stayed overnight. it was really lovely but I would agree an overall in maintenance would get it up to scratch hooks off walls and stains on carpet would do with a rug doctor treatment just little things really. also some oven gloves would have been great

beautiful, modern and amazing location

there was nothing not to like ?

Great location, nice and clean, comfortable beds, great for the family.
Carpark is great for one car though it maybe could do with a drop down post to secure the parking space on arrival.

Could do with a lick of paint to freshen the place up, especially the staircase, also carpets need a good clean, there's lots of staining which is off putting. This is our second time we've stayed last time being last year which was faultless and will only stay again if the issues are addressed.

Beds very comfy and house lovely and convenient to town centre

A lot of steps to the property would be difficult to less mobile. In my opinion could have done with more comfortable seating in living area and coffee table was dangerous to children as it slipped on flooring and we had a trip to the hospital

Very clean, well furnished and comfortable. Great location.

Lots of steps up to the property. Tight parking. Not for disabled, elderly or young children due to steps and the living area being located on the second floor, where the stairs are open to the living space, and is not safe for babies/toddlers as there is no safety gate.

Great location and nice house

The courtyard with other properties balconies facing each other can get noisy with the neighbours yelling and swearing at each other, this is not something the property owner can address. Few minor things need fixing like the back door is hard to lock and the top floor banister is loose.

Accommodation good, facilities within good ie. Many unpected untities. + however couldn't get the Internet to work to which TV was connected to, so no TV and no WiFi, contacted host which were helpful but couldn't rectify!, so we had no use of TV and WiFi. A bit frustrating but we filled our days....!

....As above.. No TV at all or WiFi

Beautiful views, very comfortable
Beds, everything you need is provided

very clean and comfortable

rather a lot of steps both outside and in.

After booking and paying (non refundable) we got an email that a scan of my passport plus a selfie was required... Having uploaded these, after a few days I received a 2nd request for this scan and selfie. (We were worried about the safety of my personal documents within this organisation.. )
Sending the scan of my passport would be rewarded by a 500 pounds worth in case of damage to the property.. (Later they let us know we'd first had to pay an extra 35 pounds for insurance..)
We would have to upload a video of the property directly after entering, to prove the state of the property at the beginning of our stay. It did not help enjoying our holiday and the house.
This house is not suitable for anybody with restricted mobility (lots of stairs in and outside).
A little less accessoires would have given more space to live.
The park and city center were at walking distance.

It was clean and well equipped.

Problem with parking totally disorganized
An hourDriving around we were given wrong postal code.
townhouse was at the top of 40 steep concrete steps, from the parking bay totally inaccessible for my 94 year old Mum,and a real struggle for us with two small children and luggage.... this was not mentioned at all in Description!..
Three phone calls to yourselves to get the correct Info!
The parking was very tight. The cleaners didn't have anywhere to park and took our space when we vacated it on Saturday morning. We couldn't leave my mother in the place by herself so had to leave on Saturday lunch time !
All in all a total disaster and extremely stressful time !

Lovely modern property. Very clean with many extras to make the stay extremely comfortable. Great communication from the host too. Excellent position for walking into Whitby

Modern and clean.

Couldn't get main channels on TV

great location.
house lovely and clean

no parking when we arrived and for the first 24 hours
no curtains or blinds in living room, houses opposite could see in

Location

our designated parking space was taken up by another car during the whole of our stay.

location great

Parking is an issue, even though a spot is allocated for you other people take it, its very tight space to park. Lots of steps to climb from car park to the apartment. The apartment is on 3 floors which should be made clear. Not suitable for elderly or small children. Should make that clear!

New & modern. High spec. fixtures & fittings

Only minor issue was link to online brochure didn't work, slightly disappointing but not the end of the world

Nice cozy place to stay. Got great view of the abbey

Location was excellent, to be able to see the Abbey from the landing window was very special.

N/A

it was very comfortable and spotlessly clean and very well maintained.

the amount of steps there were to climb

This house is on an awesome new development in the heart of Whitby. It is presented really well, and the beds are possibly the comfiest I’ve ever slept in (each bed even has a choice of medium and firm pillows!). We are counting down our days to returning to Captain’s Retreat.

Photos do not do justice to this beautiful house. It has a significant wow factor and all the home comforts you could wish for! Car parking in Whitby can be a concern, but the space for Captain’s Retreat is probably the best one in the car park and having an electric charging point is so handy! It seems that previous comments made by guests have been considered as we couldn’t fault a thing! What a fab few days!

Comfy beds
Nice decor
Location
Good tv

£125 unexpected add on fees for a weekend stay
TV needs a soundbar
Only one tea towel for drying up
No dishwasher tabs

Location

The steps inside and out

Neil And Elaine

Great find. Beautiful bedding. Crisp and fresh.
Would have benefited from more than 1 Tea towel to use. Plus no dishwasher tabs available not even one !
Otherwise a great place to stay with friends.

lovely place, perfect location

kitchen had all the amenities but a little on the small side if your wanting to cook for 5 no worries as we were eating out anyway and wasn’t too bad to make breakfast ?

Clean, spacious and located within walking distance of most attractions. Good kitchen utilities and parking.

great location, interior and nice to have tea and coffee provided.

the parking was a bit disappointing, purposefully booked this house to have parking but someone else parked in the space. called property company and said they couldn’t do anything, fine though as said we could use another space, but beware the parking spaces are not guaranteed.

absolutely stunning property, very modern & clean

quite a lot of steps getting to the property

Host and stay are by far the worst host experience we have had on Airbnb. They hound you to fill in additional verification with a company called superhog even though Airbnb themselves say this isn’t necessary. They even threatened to charge £500 to my credit card as some sort of security in case we damaged the property if I didn’t fill in the verification - awful way to treat guests who have good reviews themselves. I asked for help from host and stay twice and their responses were unhelpful and too late to be of assistance. Really not an impressive service. With regards to the property it is clean and new, but it is compact and there are 37 steps up to the front door, not something listed in the property details. Car parking space is tight and we couldn’t get in as somebody else was parked in our allocated space, so loading and unloading was really difficult!! Bedrooms are very small and hanging space is just a small freestanding rail. Kitchen is well finished, but nowhere for guests to store food as cupboards are all full. Lounge furniture feels pretty cheap and only has 1 couch and a couple of small dining room chairs to sit on which is no good if there are 4 or more adults. The worst thing was the dog friendly garden space, this was nothing more than a muddy mess and was only a few feet wide - not dog friendly at all. I really wouldn’t recommend this property unless you are really fit and don’t mind parking miles away from where you are staying.

Excellent stay in a lovely house decorated and furnished to a high standard.
Very clean and would recomend to anyone thinking of staying.

Good location, within easy reach of town and facilities, warm and cosy, well maintained, with lovely contemporary decor.

Perhaps one more comfy chair or two-seater would have been good. There wasn't a frying pan available. Some of the plumbing noises were a little off-putting

Beautifully furnished and a great location

Property is all done to a high standard it was immaculate when we arrived.

Seemed to be a problem with the drains as the shower didn’t drain properly and the toilet didn’t flush correctly either…really bad smell of sewage in the downstairs toilet

The decor was lovely. Comfy beds. Modern house really nice. Great open plan kitchen/living area Good location for town nice view of Abbey from landing. Very clean and fresh looking place. Nice and quiet.

The steep steps. Not much of a garden or seating area out of back door just weeds Tbe shower and toilet plumbing. 2 flushes every time. Shower tray flooded. Noisy plumbing. Needs blinds in living area. Couldn't get all channels to work on TV. Check out very early at 10.

Has a view of the Abbey across the harbour.

Only has parking for one car. Is a bit of a squeeze.

Great location five minute walk into town

The property was not easy to find on our Arrival. Because the property is new the postcode isn’t recognised. The property is tucked away off the Main Street. It took us an hour to find it. We did notice signs on the main rd during our stay but they are to high hence we didn’t see them. We did ring the booking agency for help & the young lady was trying her best to work with google map with us, this was very helpful.

Great location and facilities

Downstairs drains blocked causing shower to flood. However was fixed the same day

Well equipped and clean.
excellent location .
Good info on access etc

Only slight concern was noisy plumbing with shower just showing signs of blocking.

Ideal location for Whitby center, nice newly built house, finished to a high standard. Very comfortable beds and fully equipped kitchen

No indication on booking that there is quite a few steps to get up to the property

Pauline Alderton

Captain’s Retreat full filled all our expectations with the additional electric point for electric cars. The house is very clean bright with modern living with a small garden at the back. Located close to all the bars restaurants and amenities that Whitby has to offer. We would highly recommend Captain’s Retreat for you holiday.

Great stay, house is in an excellent location in the centre but private. House is very well set up, styled lovely and has nice touches links the Nespresso machine - we hope to be back!
