Best Fish & Chip shops in H&S regions

Friday 8th July, 2022 by hostandstay

What can be better than sitting on a sandy beach and getting stuck into your fresh fish and chips? Absolutely nothing is the answer!

Whether you lather your piping hot chips in vinegar or love the flaky batter cod, fish and chips can’t be beaten.

The first ever fish and chip shop opened its doors in 1860 by Joseph Malin, and since then we as a nation have been obsessed. Shops started opening up all around the country, and despite being popularised in seaside towns where they are able to catch and batter the freshest fish, the first fish and chippy was actually opened in LONDON!

We have an abundance of seaside towns with the best fish shops in the world, so take a dive into our top recommendations of places you can’t miss during your stay.

Lifeboat Fish Bar – Scarborough

Kicking off our list with this top rated favourite, Lifeboat Fish Bar was voted #1 out of 240  restaurants in Scarborough. This family run restaurant is absolutely perfect for a quick bite to take down to the sandy shores of Scarborough.

Situated next on the North Sea’s coast, this gorgeous resort town is popular with holidaymakers for its family friendly entertainment. Take a walk around the Sea-Life centre or just relax on the South Bay Beach. Whatever you do, you will work up an appetite!

The Lifeboat Fish Bar is located just off the Scarborough harbour, so you can watch as the fishermen come in with their boats, you might even spot your dinner! This place offers a sit-in restaurant and a takeaway menu, giving you the choice of where to enjoy your delicious grub!

Trenchers – Whitby

This 50-year-old restaurant is a real treat! Established in 1980, Trenchers has made a name for itself in the historic town of Whitby as being one of the best fish shops around. Even celebrity chef James Martin said it was his favourite chippy in the UK!

Need more convincing? You can’t argue with the locals, with a 4.5 star rating on TripAdvisor and Winner of the National Fish and Chip Awards in 2019, Trenchers really is the place to be!

Trenchers offers a full dining experience with a menu including fresh fish and lobster, or for those who just want that battery goodness, they also offer a fish and chip takeaway alongside their main venue.

Whitby is a great seaside town in Yorkshire, take a walk around the Gothic Whitby Abbey which was the inspiration for  Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”. There is nothing spooky about this town though, with spectacular views and great places to eat, making it the perfect place for a day visit.
