Staithes Area Guide

The Telegraph named Staithes one of Britain’s most beautiful seaside villages and it’s easy to see why. Known as the ‘Dinosaur Coast’, it is bursting with history and character. Winding cobbled streets and mismatched, huddled cottages give the air of a place lost in time.

With high, towering cliffs and a choppy sea, Staithes is a magnet for artists, geologists and those simply wanting to get close to nature. Staithes is popular for its fossils which can be found along the small beach and cluster of rockpools. Children will love rock pooling at low tide and you can occasionally see a handful of seals basking in the sun along the shore too!

Exploring Staithes

Head straight to The Kessen Bowl for all of your holiday needs. The little store has everything you will need for your coastal retreat. From buckets and spades to crab lines and bait. In true seaside style, they also have gifts and souvenirs to take home with you.

Staithes is popular for art and artists alike. Head to Staithes Gallery, a beautiful Georgian property on the High Street, which is home to wonderful exhibits inspired by the village. Whilst you’re out and about, you’ll also spot amazing painted illusions which is known as the ‘Painted Illusions Trail’. Artwork by Staithes Group, the impressionist art society, can also be found showcased around the village.

Get active and take the coastal pathways to the nearby Boulby Cliffs or head to Cowbar Nab. Hike across the North York Moors National Park or join the Cleveland Way Trail which runs between Staithes and Skinningrove. Believe us when we say you won’t get stuck for places to discover!

If you’d prefer a more relaxing stay, snuggle up in a local pub or take a leisurely stroll through the many ginnels and snickets which make up Staithes. If you’re looking for a delicious meal with a cosy and friendly atmosphere, we’d recommend the Crab and Lobster on the harbour. You’ll be hard pressed to find better locally caught seafood!

Events in Staithes

Really popular for the annual Staithes Festival each September, the village throws open its doors and plays host to popup art galleries. Visitors can explore the maze of lanes throughout Staithes and enjoy the pop up galleries and tea rooms along the way. Our favourite is Dotty’s Vintage Tea Room which is located right on the High Street. Nothing beats their delicious scones!
