Property Details

The Space
Wood Street Cottage is bright and comfortable. It’s the perfect place to unwind with your loved ones. Relax on the sofas watching Freeview on the flat screen TV or listening to CDs on a good quality audio system after an enjoyable excursion into the Dales or a trip to the castles (there are two within easy reach) or the Bowes Museum.

Fully equipped for self-catering stays, the kitchen has everything you could need to prepare meals easily. Also sharing this space is the dining area which includes a dining table and four chairs and a quality CD player. There’s extra lighting so the space can double up as your office for those days you need to log on for work.

Upstairs on the first floor, you’ll find two bedrooms and the family bathroom. The master bedroom has a zip-link king-sized bed and the second room is a double. Both bedrooms have comfortable mattresses and premium bed linens to ensure you have the best sleep possible. There are mirrors and hairdryers supplied for your convenience.

The family bathroom has a bath, walk-in shower, WC and basin.

Outside there is a small courtyard with outdoor seating. Start your day with a coffee in the sunshine at the front or enjoy a glass of something bubbly as the sun goes down at the rear.

Neighborhood
Wood Street Cottage is located in the historic market town of Barnard Castle. Featured within the Guardian’s ‘10 of the UK’s best small towns’, there is something for everyone here. If you love to shop, the town has many antique shops so treasure seekers will be in their element. There are still small independent stores which you wouldn’t see on the average high street. Take your pick of restaurants, cafes and pubs which serve lovely home-made food.

If you fancy some live entertainment whilst you’re away, check out The Witham to see which performances, films or exhibitions will be available when you visit.

Whilst there are lots of lovely walks to be done straight from the property, there is easy access to the 12th century castle with great views over the Tees Gorge. You can try to spot Richard III’s boar emblem carved above the window in the inner ward or explore the sensory garden. The ruins of Egglestone Abbey are also within walking distance. The Bowes Museum is just a 5-minute stroll away and it is a lovely place to picnic after you’ve viewed the art collection. If entertainment is your ‘thing’ check out thewitham.org.uk to see what performances or exhibitions will be showing when you visit. Watch out for the agricultural shows over the summer to get an insight into farming life in the North Pennines. The Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty holds events at the Bowlees Visitor Centre (13 miles) to provide insights into the flora and fauna of the upper dale including rare blue gentians at Cow Green. The Grassholme Observatory at Mickleton (7miles) is a good place to explore the dark skies. And the list goes on…

Getting Around
The closest mainline train station is at Darlington, offering easy access to Durham, Newcastle, Saltburn and York.

There are a number of bus routes throughout Barnard Castle. Hop on the Arriva X76 or X75 which travels to Darlington.

The best way to visit the Upper Dale is by car, or bike if you are travelling with them. You can use the space in the back yard to lock your bikes up when not is use.

Location and parking were great, we were able to get around Barnard Castle easily on foot and by car. Great place to stay and would love to visit again. I definitely recommend Wood Street for a visit to County Durham.

Everything met our expectations, we loved the property and the facilities.

Location, easy walking distance from all Barnard Castle tourist sites and facilities. Good kitchen, nice to have seating space in there. Clean and tidy.

Small bedroom bed was very creaky and not very comfy, small bedroom was also very small, OK for a night or two, but any longer probably better suited for a couple and child, rather than 2 couples.

Comfy beds, well equipped kitchen, on a nice quiet street within easy reach of the main high street.

Excellent location in the centre of Barnard Castle. Everything we wanted to do was within walking distance.

We hadn't really noticed that the property was dog friendly, so sofas etc pretty basic and not comfortable.

Lovely house in a great location, really clean and cosy. Would have preferred the ‘insurance/damage fee’ was more obvious at the booking stage rather than the surprise just before my holiday. Be prepared for a £25 or £250 refundable damage deposit.

This accommodation was really nice and comfy. Really liked this property. This is a property that you don't meet the people renting. Collect the key from a safe box. Not a problem for me.

Driving into the accommodation parking was tight .
The bathroom window was a skylight an extractor fan would have been easier.
Cooker instructions were needed.

A really nice cottage, located in the heart of town and yet it was so quiet. Great location to visit the Bowes Museum, Castle and shops. It was perfect for our weekend stay to visit relatives.

The cottage is centrally located in a quiet back street. The town centre is only a short walk away, as is the Bowes Museum, the Castle and the river. Cleaning and the amenities offered, are of a good standard.
Host and Stay are very prompt in replying to email queries.
Electronic Guide book.

The overall cleanliness is let down by the stairs, living room carpet and rug being dirty and stained.
The freezer was still in a largely unusable condition (as per an earlier review).
No oven gloves (also as per an earlier review) and the rug in the main bedroom is a trip hazard as the corners curl up.
Only 5 mugs and 5 tumblers.
The shower – a tepid shower or a warm dribble.
There is a security deposit charge which was not mentioned prior to booking. A £5 charge for transacting a security deposit of £200 on a credit card or £25 for deposit insurance - it has to be either or!
Too many emails from Host and Stay

We did contact Host and Stay while we were on holiday regarding some of the above, who said we did not give them 'enough' time to rectify the issues. Given there had already been ample time for them to put right some of the previously reported issues and they had not done so - how long would be 'enough'?

Nice clean place exactly as described unlike the extra hidden fees.
Shame they couldn't be transparent about this in initial description.
Nearly three weeks later and still waiting for a substantial £250 insurance refund or some communication as to why it hasn't been refunded.
Extra cleaning fees at check out and an extra £10 random fee. Never had this on any other booking anywhere else.
All these extra fees and we still had to chase up a code for entry.
Couldn't fault the property, quiet, clean and well equipped.

The area at the back of the property was poorly maintained in comparison to the rest of the cottage it was quite scruffy and in my opinion let the property down..
Despite the cottage having very good facilities being decorated to a high standard the lounge was quite small and I do feel the cost for just 2 nights was rather high...

We loved Wood St Cottage. It's in a great location in centre of Barnard Castle, with the bonus of a parking space. Easy walking distance to the Bowes museum and restaurants. Cozy and tastefully decorated, with a spacious kitchen diner. Cute courtyard garden and the benefit of being able to admire the wonderful flowers in neighbouring garden! Super comfy beds. Would recommend and love to come again.

A beautiful cottage in an excellent location, close to the centre but off a lovely quiet street. Very comfortably furnished and we loved the sunny garden. Definitely recommend a stay here and we'd love to come back!

Please don't stint on loo roll, and it was very cheap quality, plus there was no hand soap in the bathroom so we had to buy our own of both items. The freezer needs defrosting, as you could only open one drawer with some difficulty.

Susan

03/06/2023

Very clean and comfortable. Everything we needed was provided. Quiet and secluded. Walking distance from shops and amenities.

Access by large car was tight as the lane is narrow due to parked vehicles (although passable with care).

property was fine.

power cuts a few times, but due to energy supplier to be fair

Ian

15/02/2023

Nice enough place and very convenient for Barnard Castle and shops. Booking let down by two main factors, additional fees not described prior to booking and access to parking, very narrow road with vans parked making it almost impossible to get past, and parking really only enough for one car not two as advertised. Could have been a little cleaner as well with rubbish under sofa left from previous stay.

Lovely cottage in a great location for town. Large rooms. Nice decor. Well equipped. Decent shower. Comfy beds. Good internet, TV/satellite & sound system. Host always responded quickly. Really enjoyed the stay.

The arrangement the management company had for a damage deposit which they charged you an admin fee for even if no damage was done. This was not described in the listing. Only told about it after we booked. Also inflexible early check out time.

The electronic visitors guide and hard copy version in property were comprehensive and helpful. The property is well located near the heart of town and the excellent Bowes Museum. It came with lots of nice touches: coffee and tea, all mod cons in the kitchen and practical domestic touches throughout

The accidental damage links didn’t work but managers helped to resolve in reasonable time.

20/09/2022

Great property in a great location being so close to everything the town has to offer. The parking space outside the front door was a big plus point but not so sure it would take two large cars without being a problem for the next door neighbour - 1 large or 2 small cars maybe.

The "use by" date on the milk left in the fridge by the host was up on the day we arrived.

Too many unnecessary emails. One email confirming the booking and one confirming the access arrangements would have been sufficient - 12 emails in two weeks is just ridiculous.

A lovely little house in a quiet street, close to the town centre, with all facilities as per the Airbnb listing.
If you arrive at the weekend and drive a large car you might find it tricky getting along the street and turning around outside the house if residents are parked outside their own houses

A wonderful stay at this cottage. We booked this last minute and felt it was perfect for our 2 night stay. It is in a great location, its very cosy and had convenient outdoor parking. I'd recommend this place if visiting Bernard castle and for beautiful countryside drives. It is just 25 minutes away from highforce waterfall.

Great location, just five minutes from the town centre, yet on a private lane that was beautifully quiet. The cottage has good sized rooms (the second double is adequate, but not large) and is very well decorated and equipped. It was spotlessly clean and well presented and very comfortable. The small rear garden was beautiful. There is private parking for two large cars.

Nothing. Please respect the fact that this is not a ‘party house’, and don’t ruin life for those who live permanently on the lane.

This is an immaculate property in a really central spot in Barnard Castle. At the time of our stay (Aug 2021) everything seemed brand new and spotlessly clean. Great to have a dedicated parking spot too as the town can get very busy on market days. We would definitely stay again & would highly recommend.
