Property Details

The Space
The Wasa Penthouse is named after an early 17th century Swedish warship which sank on its maiden voyage. It is now preserved and has become one of Sweden's most popular tourist attractions. Pronounced Vasa, the penthouse celebrates the links between Britain and Sweden where the apartment owners spend half the year in each country.

Inside the apartment, you’ll find an open plan kitchen, living and dining area. Sleek and modern, the kitchen has a range of soft-close units with granite worktops. Fully equipped for self-catering stays, the integrated appliances include a five-element induction hob, a double oven and microwave, a dishwasher and an American-style fridge-freezer.

The dining area and the living space both comfortably seat six making them perfect socialising and relaxing with your loved ones. You’ll find a smart TV, a blu-ray DVD player, DVDs and a library of fiction and non-fiction books in the living area so you can unwind during your stay.

The large master bedroom features a double bed, two double wardrobes, a smart TV, a sofa and a desk. The second bedroom is also a double and the third has twin single beds which can be linked to make a double.

All the rooms in The Wasa Penthouse benefit from incredible exposed beams. The Velux windows offer panoramic views over the old town of Berwick, across the River Tweed, and down the Northumberland coast to Lindisfarne and Bamburgh Castle.

Host & Stay are committed to our owners that their homes are protected during guest bookings. For this reason, we require all our guests to transfer a Damage Deposit (refundable, subject to an administration charge) or, to purchase an Accidental Damage Waiver which will cover you for up to £500.00 of accidental damage during your stay.

Neighborhood
The Wasa Penthouse is located in the coastal town of Berwick-upon-Tweed at the most northerly tip of Northumberland. Just 3 miles from the Scottish Border, it boasts long stretching sandy shores and a stunning riverside. Take the time to unwind with a day at the beach or enjoy a walk by the river.

Berwick-upon-Tweed has lots of events and festivities on offer too. There are annual festivals for film, music, food and drinks as well as entertainment throughout the year at the theatre and cinema. You’ll have your pick of restaurants, cafes and pubs as the town has an array of great places to choose from.

There will be plenty of history for you to uncover as you can visit Berwick Barracks, The Main Guard and the town’s old courtroom. The town also has a number of inspiring art galleries on offer including The Granary Gallery, Berwick Museum and Art Gallery and Dockside Gallery.

Getting Around
Berwick-upon-Tweed is within 45 minutes’ drive time of other popular Northumberland destinations such as Alnwick, Alnmouth, Seahouses and Bamburgh so it’s perfectly located for exploring.

Berwick-upon-Tweed train station is a short 10-minute walk from The Wasa Penthouse with regular services to Newcastle and Edinburgh as well as London Kings Cross.

There are also a number of bus routes through the town. Hop on the X15 Arriva bus which travels to Newcastle and has stops in Belford, Alnwick and Morpeth. If you’d like to visit Craster, Seahouses, Bamburgh, Amble or Alnmouth, the X18 Arriva bus will take you there.

We have just returned from a lovely week at Wasa penthouse to visit family in Berwick. We have 3 children and it was a great space for them, we were within walking distance to the town which was great, with lovely views across the town to the sea. The apartment itself is really clean and tidy and spacious.<br/>We had some trouble checking in because we weren’t sent the property’s guide book so didn’t know where the bin store was to get the key to get inside! I phoned Stay and luckily someone answered (on a Friday evening) and we managed to get in eventually after lots of proving who I was and email confirmation numbers I didn’t have etc!<br/>We were also not very pleased about the damage deposit that we had to pay and didn’t know about until we had booked. When we arrived the radiator in the spare room was hanging off and I took a time stamped photo of it as soon as we got in just incase we were blamed for it! <br/>Other than that I really recommend this as a lovely bolt hole to explore Berwick!

The flat was lovely. Very warm, light and spacious. Location is great and the onsite parking was right outside the door. Interesting decor. Really fabulous range of books. I would recommend it for anyone wanting to stay in central Berwick.

Very nice luxury big penthouse flat in the old town of Berwick upon tweed. Three bedrooms two bathrooms. Parking for one car near the front door. Clearly well looked after and maintained. Good view over the rooftops of the old town and to the sea.

An amazing space for a girls walking weekend. Was disappointed that the drain smell was very overpowering given the feedback given by other guests. The twin beds are not full sized beds and this was not made clear on the listing (also despite asking for the beds to be made as twin and being told that they are always made as a twin unless requested as a double they were made as a double - I did message and was offered for the beds to be split the following day but we had managed to make do with the extra bedding that we found) <br/>The bathrooms were not clean - orange mould around the base of the shower tray, dirt around the tap in the bathroom, soap marks down the vanity unit<br/>We did enjoy our stay but I was disappointed that given the cost of the stay the quality was not as I would have expected and the worst that I have experienced via ABnB, but it is easily resolvable if the company had higher standards of cleanliness.

The location was fantastic, a short walk through a walk way and you was in the town centre. The whole place however needed cleaning. It had a fusty smell when you walked in. The tables and kitchen work top had left over crumbs on. The bathrooms needed a good clean and the showers were filthy. You could see dirty hand prints on the fridge and freezer and the whole kitchen needed cleaning including the cutlery, plates, cups and glasses.

We had a lovely week long stay at Wasa and it was the perfect base for us to explore the area. The space was open and great for making meals at home instead of always eating out. The space was clean, had lot of interesting art, and was very comfortable for our family. There are lots of shops, coffee, restaurants, and the ramparts within a few block radius. The flat is on the top floor so you do need to climb a few flights of stairs or take the lift to the floor below and then walk up the last flight, but that was in the listing so it wasn't an issue for our group. Overall, the flat was perfect for our week in Northumberland.

The property was very well appointed. Well furnished and very comfortable.<br/>Radiator off the wall in bedroom 3. Main entrance door was not secure, although this was resolved on our last day. Lounge door was difficult to open on arrival. The 24hr call line was extremely frustrating. The first person I called was very difficult to understand and they also had difficulty understanding me. I had an issue with a key (my fault) could have been resolved very quickly had the first person I called had a good grasp of the property nuances and had a good grasp of the English language. Cindy the last person I called on the help line was extremely professional and helpful. Unfortunately this intervention by her was 3 hrs and an hours drive later. The problem was resolved. A simple issue that could have been resolved was a blemish on what was a very good stay in the Wassa apartment.

The worst thing was that they charge a damage deposit (£250) and they take £10 admin fee OR you have to buy damage deposit waiver for £25. There was no info on this in the add. I guess they do that as there is lots of weird glass ornaments everywhere in the apartment which can easily be knock over. There are 2 very uncomfortable sofas plus 2 chairs in the lounge - clearly they were trying to accommodate for 6 person hanging out in the lounge at the lowest cost. There is also a mix of furniture in the bedrooms, some look like they come from ex-GP waiting room. Bedsheets and towels need urgent upgrade.! There was an awful smell in one of the bathrooms. All in all it is a big apartment with potential but they overcharge for the state of the apartment as it is now. I would recommend making some changes before continuing charging a top dollar.

Fantastic appartment, very spaceous, well equipped, luxureous, cosy atmosphere, quality materials.<br/>We liked the audio/video setup, the fridge with ice cubicles, the bathrooms, the parking at the front door.<br/>Only one serious downside to this appartment: A colony of seagulls had taken over the entire neighborhood, screeching deafeningly loudly from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m, as close as on the roof of this appartment. We didn't get a good night sleep here, although we tried earplugs, the seagull sound somehow is not blocked at all.<br/>We ended up attaching strips of sheet plastic to the windows, in a desperate attempt to keep the seagulls at least at some distance.<br/>Also most of the windows were very dirty on the outside, no doubt thanks to our bird friends as well.

This is a fabulous apartment right in the heart of Berwick. The photos don't really do justice to how spacious it is.<br/>Great views over the town, a large collection of books and some wonderful artwork around the walls.<br/>Contact with the hosts was great, check-in was easy and the accommodation was spotlessly clean.

Lovely property, well appointed and situation in a perfect location within the town, as well as in Northumberland. We used it as a base for day trips, even getting the train up to Edinburgh, as well as for local sightseeing to Lindisfarne, Bamburgh and Alnwick.

Amazingly designed apartment in a very central location in Berwick -- Great views from the flat, and extremely comfortable accomadation for two adults and four kids.<br/>Parking was easy and the location was great for exploring Berwick and Nothumbria. Everything we needed was there -- nothing bad to say

The location was great.<br/>The apartment was massive with very large rooms.<br/>Broken radiator on a bedroom wall.<br/>Stain on a duvet cover.<br/>Requested a twin room but all were sett up as doubles.

The location was excellent, right in centre of town . The facilities where great and the flat was very spacious.<br/>The bedrooms could do with blackout blinds , you’re wakened very early with bright light streaming in. The cleaning of the bathrooms was poor and they give off a smell either caused by dampness or poor drainage .

Jane

14/06/2023

The apartment was lovely and the location was great.<br/>There was an awful smell like sewage in both bathrooms. We think there is a problem with the shower traps and reported it, so hopefully no one else has to live with the smell we spent more time out of the apartment than in. The smell was putrid.

Great location and plenty of room with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. There is a lift but to get to the penthouse you still need to climb 1 level, worth noting if you have mobility issues.

Andrea

27/05/2023

location and parking excellent<br/>lift very nice<br/>great design, spacious, quite well equipped<br/>All four of us had “insomnia”, the whole 3 nights, bedrooms lack blackout blinds and it gets light before 5am!suggestion: “portable canister” in showers for shampoo etc; medium sized “Teflon” frying pan, the iron pan heavy and food can stick.

Positives…<br/><br/>We had a really good family break here and overall we would recommend to others. The flat is spacious, well equipped and located centrally. It is more impressive than the photos and is a brilliant base for exploring nearby towns and attractions.<br/><br/>Negatives…<br/><br/>Unfortunately there was a slight issue with a leaking shower in the main bedroom’s bathroom which was not resolved during our stay (despite us being told that it would). Also, as it’s on the top floor it can be quite noisy with all the seagulls around. The seagulls also left my car looking like a plasterer’s radio by the end of our 4 day stay just from being parked outside.

The apartment was bigger than anticipated from the photos. The ceilings were higher. The kitchen was well stocked which was important for us as we stay in to eat. It was also nice and warm which was great because the weather wasn't! We enjoyed the arty ornaments and pictures. They made it very homely. It was also in a great location for going out for an early morning coffee. The snags were the sewerage smells in both bathrooms which got much worse following the rain. Also, the bath water was not very warm at night. Thanks.

The locations was excellent, right in the centre of town. The property itself was stunning. Big rooms, comfy beds and seating, great sound system and decent TV. Kitchen was kitten out very well and lovely bathrooms. Staff were very informative and responsive and even were decent enough to sort out postage for an item left behind.<br/>The 2 sofas don't match the standard of the property and the bathroom drains begin to smell a little.

A very spacious apartment in a good location. Walking distance to local bars and restaurants. Lift in building but stops one floor short of the apartment.<br/>We were surprised, after we’d booked and paid, to be told that we needed to either pay £25 to insure against damage, or to pay £250 refundable some days after the stay if there was no damage.

02/10/2022

its location<br/>It was dirty, the bath had a ring of scum around it. The saucepan didn’t work with the induction hob. The hot water was lukewarm despite it being advertised as on demand. The bathrooms smelt of drains the entire time which was extremely unhealthy. Only 2 of the heaters worked whilst we were there. The towel rails didn’t work either, the separate controls on them just flickered. Half the light switches didn’t work, some of the lights didn’t appear to have light switches. The only cleaning materials in the apartment were a bottle of washing up liquid and a bag of dishwasher salt. What isn’t mentioned is the lift in the building only goes up 2 out of the 3 floors so if anyone has problems with stairs or carrying suitcases up stair, there are 2 more flights of stairs to carry your luggage up to get to the apartment on the 3rd floor. We had booked for 3 nights but cut our break short and left after 2 as the smell of drains in the bathrooms was so bad we couldn’t stay there. We left at 7:30 in the morning so had spent a little over 36 hours in the town and about 20 of those were in the apartment itself. The master bathroom door didn’t close enough to shut properly, let alone lock so we couldn’t close it to keep the smell from coming into the apartment. This property is managed by a company and not the owners which is apparent when we mentioned the above issues. They offered to come and re-clean the apartment on day 3, which wouldn’t have helped the drain smell at all.

Due to a serious accident only two of our party of four could visit. We did request a deferral but this was flatly refused. We understand that if they had been unable to relet the apartment we couldn’t have expected a deferral but they were not prepared to try.<br/>The apartment was spacious with lovely views and the bonus of private parking, marred only by the strong drain smell in both bathrooms which was extremely unpleasant.

We loved the size and modern and quirky facilities of the Penthouse and everything was clean. Good central location to Berwick. With exception to the seagulls was very quiet<br/>Stairs to top floor as only a small lift. Seagulls very noisy all night and blinds did not prevent light coming in early on the morning . Shower door needs fixing and one bed a futon really and low and hardbase.

Fantastic, spacious apartment with everything you could need.<br/>Perfectly located for the town and to visit attractions in the area like Bamburgh, Lindisfarne, Alnwick etc.<br/>Also only an hour from Edinburgh which is always worth a visit <br/>Couldn't fault the accommodation, just wish we'd stayed for longer.<br/>Would recommend without reservation and will probably return.<br/>The seagulls ??, noisy devils that leave their mark on your car ?.

Couldn't recommend this property more highly! Spectacular views over Berwick, and the interior is beautifully elegant and decorated with such interesting artworks. <br/><br/>Very spacious, comfortable, and everything we needed was to hand in terms of cookware and so on allowing us to make use of the large dining table for a family meal. <br/><br/>The double bed in one of the rooms easily seperates to allow for use as two single beds which suited us perfectly, and extra bedding to accomodate this setup was provided.

21/06/2022

Location was great - right in centre of Berwick (5 mins walk to shops & restaurants) but dedicated parking outside and easy to find just off the main street. Apartment exceptionally well furnished - all mod cons - and excessive amounts of cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery & glassware! Service from Host & Stay (managing agent) was superb with clear instructions, readily available helpline, etc all delivered with friendly professionalism<br/>The bathrooms lacked usable / decent mirrors, as did all the bedrooms. The "Smart" TV was impossible to use and could do with a brief clear set of instructions being left on view. Similarly the lighting in the lounge-kitchen was overly complicated - with 9 (?) dimmer switches - and would also benefit from a clear instruction card. Finally, the WiFi code supplied (which also corresponded to that printed on the router) didn't work - clearly some joker had changed the code!

This is a spacious, light, and well-equipped flat in an excellent position with regard to the town and amenities. It is wonderful to have a parking space too. It was marred only by dirty windows which spoilt the effect. There is a wonderfully eclectic selection of books and a huge choice of DVDs, though mainly in Swedish. It is comfortable and well-decorated. Overall, we felt it was worth the extra money it costs though perhaps not our first choice in summer because there is no outside space.

WASA Penthouse is a fantastic place. There is lots of space, lovely decor with all you need for your stay and the views are great. The beach, nature, walks and archaeology are all close by, you even have an alleyway opposite that takes you straight to the shops. There are many cafes and restaurants nearby, we particularly enjoyed the Queens Head Hotel and Limoncello. We'd stay at WASA and Berwick Upon Tweed again.

This apartment is absolutely stunning and in an amazing location. Close to all amenities and Berwick is a beautiful place . The rooms are really big and it’s very modern with a touch of class and almost contemporary feel with the conversion / wooden beams all over . A few challenges with the cleaning done by the management / cleaning company but not enough to detract from an amazing break and would definitely stop again
