Property Details

The Space
A vibrant and stunning property, sat astride the historic Spanish Battery on Tynemouth, boasting 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms that can comfortably accommodate 10 guests in fine living and easy living for a wonderful getaway on the Northumberland coast. Two trundle beds are also available upon request, increasing the occupancy to 12.

At the beating heart of this property is the combined kitchen and dining room. Dominating the kitchen is the centre island, with fine, white worktops spreading out across it and the surrounding kitchen. The island also houses the electric hob on top of it and the extractor fan above. Circling the island are the other worksurfaces, as well as the drawers and cupboards that house all the cutlery and dinnerware you will need. The kitchen also offers two electric ovens, fridge and freezer, toaster and kettle. Across from the Kitchen is the dining room, which has space and chairs to seat six people comfortably for comfort dining as you admire the decorations across the walls.

Through from the kitchen is a games room for the perfect night-in. Fitted with a pool table, two sofas, TV, fridge and mini-bar. This room is the ideal place for a high-octane Friday night. For those more quiet hours of relaxing however there is also a living room, luxuriously decorated, with a wood-burning fireplace and flatscreen TV, all of which you can relax and take in while reclined in one of the two sofas or the plush leather armchair.

Neighborhood
Steeped in history with strong maritime connections, The View Old Coastguard Cottage is located in the upmarket seaside town of Tynemouth. Boasting a beautiful sandy beach, a Victorian boating lake and an array of independent cafes, restaurants and bars, there is truly something for everyone in Tynemouth. Enjoy relaxing walks along the seafront, amble along the promenade to the popular North Shields Fish Quay or explore the Blue Reef Aquarium. If you have little ones, they’ll love Tynemouth Park where there is a dinosaur themed mini golf course and pedalo boats.

We’d also recommend visiting Whitley Bay during your stay where you can enjoy two miles of golden sands and experience incredible views of the coastline from the Victorian lighthouse on St Mary’s Island. If you’re looking for somewhere to eat, head to Spanish City where you’ll find a Renaissance-style hall transformed with a fish and chip restaurant, a traditional tearoom, a waffle and pancake house and a champagne bar inside.

Getting Around
There is a metro station located in Tynemouth with frequent routes to South Shields and Newcastle so you can explore the North East easily. A number of connecting routes can also be found from these stations so getting to other locations around the UK could not be easier.

You’ll also find a number of bus stops throughout the town. Hop on the Arriva 306 route which travels to Newcastle with stops in North Shields and Jesmond amongst others.

Location is fabulous. Amazing views. Plenty of room for our family in the house - 6 adults and 2 small children. Local shops, bars and restaurants and easy link to Newcastle via the metro. We know the area very well and found this accommodation met our needs perfectly. Host was punctual to let us into the property and very welcoming.

The location was beautiful, the house had so much untapped potential. The property was tired, not very clean and things were not working properly - like the blinds in the main bedroom once down could not be raised so we couldn't enjoy the Seaview. The showers all had mould and the downstairs one felt too unclean to use. There was old open food left in the fridge. We were in the area for work, so out most of the time, but had I booked this for a holiday I would have been incredibly disappointed.

Our view is 'buyer beware'. The house is in a fabulous location and could be amazing.... but... it is not. As with other visitors, we arrived to find our sheets drying on the line and had to wait considerable time for the owner to make the beds with the damp (unironed) sheets. The whole house is slightly unkempt. There are grubby carpets in some areas, stained in others. Flooring that is ill fitting, showers that need the sealant replacing. Smelly gas fires in a couple of the bedrooms...as examples. Outside, the garden across the car park should be a fantastic space to enjoy the views, but it is strewn with bikes, rusty barbecue and tumbles of odd tables & chairs. The 'hot tub' is a small blow up - not up and running, and looking rather sad in its little enclosure. The details clearly stated that a hot tub was available, but even if it had been filled it was not an appealing prospect! Other than that, Tynemouth is great - The Fish Shop and Fish Shack & Woods for coffee

This has, indeed, been a beautiful cottage (in years gone by perhaps when the reviews were fairly positive, but not now.) The house has so much potential and location is perfect with tremendous views. However (and its a big however) that's where the similarities with the photos on websites end. Overall the cottage was dirty and ramshackle, the last two reviews in 2024 offer a true reflection of the issues faced by our party. Please read them and beware. We had a long standing conversation with the owner about a refund due to the hot tub not being in use - it was being fixed, we would get a refund, they were coming to fix it, a refund would be in the account, there was a problem, it would be there the next day .. and on .. and on .. none of these were true. We are still waiting for a refund and this is some 3 weeks + our stay coming to an end. Sadly, whilst the owner we dealt with appeared a polite person, they also appear to be fond of a tall tale or two. We had an enjoyable time whilst in Tynemouth .. we are the kind of people who crack on regardless and its a wonderful place. It is with regret that we are posting this review as we wanted to resolve the issue with the owner directly, however this has not been possible to date.

The view is indeed lovely. This is were the accuracy of the pictures ends. The property was dirty, not vacuumed and full of junk. Broken and poorly fitted fixtures and fittings. Kitchen cupboards and freezer full of old food. There were broken kettles (6!) and poorly fitted electric cables in the games room. The present photos must be at least 10 years old. The hot tub is over a road in a garden full of junk including dog excrement and does not work. This could be lovely but really isn't. Wish we'd read the poor reviews beforehand.

Family stay for dads 70th birthday. What a joke . Dishes and cultery dirty had to be washed before able to use . . Toilet in main bathroom were blocked and unusable Toilet down stairs was un stable and dirty and mouldy. Mattress in small bedroom did not fit bed base . . Games room was a mess and dangerous with electric cables all twisted and unsafe . Then Hot tub my god in a bucket of mud . Yes it's January but we've been to cottages before and Hot tub and areas were fine . Thus Hot tub had cold smelly water in and on the lid was statent water . Was in a puddle of mood with no hard standing . Broken furniture laying all over garden . Complained and got a very rude response from the owner . Advise don't go keep away .

Second time we’ve stayed here, both times have been great. It’s a lovely house with everything we could have needed, no issues for our group of 7

Stunning location and lovely place. The house is beautiful and quirky. Great amenities and walks nearby. The hot tub is across the car park from the house so bring a robe if you want to use it.

Can’t review the property as my booking for 10 guests was cancelled two hours before we were due to arrive. This property was booked direct with the owner for 2 nights (2&3 December) (to save him commission costs and to save me £15). We live locally but had eight guests arriving to celebrate my daughter’s birthday, the guests were driving from other parts of the UK. As requested by the owner I rang him at 1pm on the day of arrival to confirm what time to meet to get the keys, his first words were “oh you’re booked, I have to cancel you”, he then went on to say the boiler had broken and he couldn’t let my party into the property for insurance purposes, fine, boilers break, it was snowing and cold, these things happen, my gripe is that I wasn’t informed and had I not rang him we all would of turned up at 3pm! When questioned why he hadn’t rang me to let me know the problem his answer was “I couldn’t remember your name”, no apology just told to send bank details for refund. So at considerable expense we had to find alternative accommodation for 8 guests and a dog for two nights, not easy in December. Luckily we are locals so the celebration eventually went ahead at our home then guests departed to their separate hotel rooms - not the weekend that was planned and no apology from the owner. Much later that evening I noticed that the property was advertised as vacant on 3rd December, im guessing boiler now fixed, it would of been a decent gesture of the owner to let me know so my guests could have at least spent one day together.

A family of 11 had a 2 night stay here. The house is amazing and the views are spectacular. Plenty of room for us all with a bathroom and 3 showers. The kids loved the games room, we didn’t use the garden as it was winter. The house is in a perfect location for a walk to the beach or town. We used just eat one night for our food. The house could do with a little TLC in places and the photos on the website need to be updated as the rooms are a bit different now. One thing to look out for is the hearth in the big bedroom above the lounge is very close to the door as our grandson found out when he stubbed his toe, after a trip to A&E it was confirmed that he had broken it but apart from that we had a great weekend.

A nice spacious home in a lovely location. Amazing views surrounding the house. Lots of outdoor seating area. The owner Graham was very kind and helpful. He met us at the property on arrival and showed us around. He was also available throughout our stay when we needed to contact him.

After reading some reviews I was sceptical about our stay, especially as we were going with my parents and in- laws there were 8 of us in total. Yes the property is a little rough around the edges in places but absolutely nothing that impacted our stay in any way. We rented the entire house for a week and therefore the shared bathroom was no issue to us, although 1 room does now have a recently added ensuite. The games room was brilliant for the kids and the location perfect for exploring the local area, especially as the metro is only a 10min walk. The kitchen was well equipped (maybe a little too well equipped as not much cupboard space until we moved stuff around). We were met by Graham who was lovely and friendly and showed us around and was brilliant with the kids. The house has views from nearly every room and was plenty big enough for the 8 of us, we had lovely weather and made use of the outdoor space too, the kids loved having use of the bikes. All in all we had a brilliant week and wouldn't hesitate to book it again.

We arrived to be greeted by Graham who was frantically trying to dry sheets and towels, it transpired that the towels on the line were our towels and we were asked to bring them in once dried. He returned to the house 15 mins after leaving to collect mugs from our cupboards for another property he rents out as he didn’t have enough for them. The garden is across the parking at the front and had far too many dangers for my children to be able to use the space safely. The out side area surrounding the actual house had seating cushions that had been left out side to be rained on. The kitchen cupboards were full of random stuff and was not well equipped for home cooking. The house has so much potential and has absolutely beautiful views as well as great location but it has been left to get tired and worn in many areas and is in need of some TLC making it hard to relax and feel at home. With some care it could be an amazing place to stay. The cost of staying here is too high.

The location was fab and views were stunning. Nice touch with welcome gifts- lager, wine & chocolates Kitchen & dining area looked great, but needs work- lots of sockets not working, mosh mash of cutlery & crockery (4 bowls for 6 people!) Sticky floors and quite a bit of dust around the house. heavy rain leaked in by patio doors in bedroom. No toilet roll. Broken & unusable drawers in more than 1 bedroom (we fixed one ourselves so could store!), wardrobe in downstairs room was very wobbly. Arrived on Monday- All outside bins were full (general and recycling) Tuesday evening, a man walked in without knocking & said he worked there and was looking for blankets as was sleeping in garage! Very unsettling & made family feel unsafe. Also, lots of activity outside of the property, with people coming through gate & collecting ladders etc. Again- left us unsettled. Generally, the building needs attention in every room- poor workmanship, missing tiles, weeds on patio, mouldy grout…needs some TLC & could be fab!

Booked a room with a private bathroom. Arrived and we have a shared bathroom. Correspondence is confusing enough to find it hard to prove but I will. Host is rude and unhelpful. Moved to an alternate property. Husband likened it to a crack den.

This property exceeded our expectations in so many ways and had a real comforting home from home feel to it.The views were incredible, with the garden and balconies overlooking the meeting of the Tyne and the Sea, and the twinkling lights of South Shields at night. The main streets of Tynemouth and the Priory were about 5 mins walk away. The kitchen was massive and modern, the lounge tastefully decorated and cosy. The bedrooms were spacious. There was a historical/nautical theme to the decor including a lovely brass antique telescope and framed ancient deeds to the house. There were childrens books in the twin room. Adjacent to the kitchen is a chill out room/playroom complete with beer fridge and disco lights. Outside there is a garden with hot tub, climbing frame, picnic table and deck chairs as well as space to pitch a tent. Thank you Graeme for being such a friendly and welcoming host. Nothing was too much trouble and we can't wait to book a return trip.

The house is in a fantastic location, with great views over the Tyne and lots of great walks in easy reach. There are some issues with things needing repaired or replaced, and parking near the property is quite busy and tight with turning around being quite difficult if you have a bigger car. Overall, we had a nice stay, but felt that the pictures as shown do not reflect the current state of the property.

Fantastic location which served well for two families, eight in total. The week was spent in glorious weather sitting out on the decking until late using the bbq and relaxing. The house has plenty of room and is ideally placed as a base for Tynemouth, beaches or walking to the fish quay in North Shields.
