Neighborhood
The coastal town of Whitby has something special about it and has long been popular with visitors to Yorkshire’s Coast, owing to its delightful harbour which is surrounded by pretty houses, restaurants and fun things to do. All this splendour is overlooked by the historic Whitby Abbey.

The town is famous for its association with Bram Stoker‘s Dracula, English explorer Captain James Cook and the mysterious Whitby Jet. Visitors can stroll along the harbour walls, from where seals, dolphins and porpoises can be seen as little fishing boats chug by. The town’s maritime heritage is commemorated by statues of Captain Cook and William Scoresby and the whalebone arch at the top of the West Cliff.

Other significant features include the swing bridge, which crosses the River Esk and the harbour, which is sheltered by the grade II listed East and West piers.

West of town is West Cliff Beach, lined with colourful beach huts.

Getting Around
Whitby rail station is located along Bagdale and towards Victoria Square. There are routes to Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Sunderland, Newcastle, Hexham and Carlisle via the scenic Esk Valley Line.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is also accessible from Whitby rail station. Go back in time and enjoy dramatic moorland all the way to the market town of Pickering.

Whitby has great bus routes to surrounding areas including villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast. You’ll find regular routes to Scarborough and Middlesbrough, along with occasional direct services to Pickering, Malton, York and Leeds.

The nearest airport is Teesside International, 45 miles away from Whitby.

I could not be more disappointed with our experience with Host and Stay (by far the worst hosts I have encountered) <br/>The property itself is lovely, decorated beautifully and reasonably well equipped and we enjoyed Whitby. Our stay however was completely marred by Host and Stay who failed to provide us with the code to get the key - leaving my wife and I with our three young children walking around late at night without a place to stay until 10:30PM. They were completely uncontactable the whole afternoon/evening (not responding to us or AirBnB via phone or message) and all we received were generic automated email responses. Eventually we had to get a last-minute hotel for the night in Scarborough. A hugely stressful experience which completely spoiled our holiday! Eventually we received the key code at 11:20PM and were able to get in to the property the next day. Host and Stay were a shambles and incommunicative and trying to sort it out since has been a nightmare too.

We had a lovely stay in this property as a family of 2 adults and 3 kids. It’s a small but perfectly formed house, with 3 separate toilets and an en-suite in the master bedroom. Kitchen had everything you could need including an iron. Parking was difficult due to the nature of the tiny steep streets so bear that in mind if you have members of your party who can’t walk far/up hills with luggage! We had difficulty connecting to the WiFi, which wasn’t the details provided (it’s the details on the back of the router). Whitby is a lovely location for a family holiday - this place is about 20 mins walk (with kids) from the beach up/down some steep hills.
