Neighborhood
Newton-by-the-Sea is a delightful village which is popular for sailing and windsurfing with a lovely sandy beach and fine views across Embleton Bay to Dunstanburgh Castle. The area is renowned for bird watching and the National Trust owns most of the village and surrounding countryside.

The 'square' is the heart of the old village, where low buildings surround a large grass square, with a pub in the corner serving bar meals and hot soups for those walking on wild days.

You’ll be spoiled by wildlife when staying in Newton-by-the-Sea. Visit the Newton Pool, a freshwater Nature Reserve just 80 metres from the shore, with its accessible hides it is a good place to observe migrating birds, head to see a breeding colony of terns at Long Nanny Burn in the middle of Beadnell Bay, or look out for sponges and anemones on the soft rock shore on the overhanging rocks, or go rockpooling, finding hermit crabs and porcelain crabs.

In the village, visit Low Newton Square with its cream-washed cottages and an historic pub. Also look out for the unusual St Mary’s church, which dates from the end of the 19th century. The church, originally purchased in kit form, is constructed from corrugated steel sheeting and features pretty stained glass windows - It is known locally as the 'Tin Church'.

We really enjoyed our family stay in this property. It was spacious enough to have 6 and two dogs without feeling like we crammed in together. The courtyard area was a good secure space to allow the dogs to play outside whilst we were in the property. The location was great, being a 20 minute walk from the beach at Low Newton and we highly recommend booking in for a meal at the Joiners Arms which is just across the road.

We are just back from a lovely 2 night stay at Doray House. The house was beautifully decorated with loads of space. Beach was only a 10 minute walk away with the pub literally right across the road. There were a couple of things to mention - upon arrival we found a tooth flossing tool on the floor beside the bed in one of the bedrooms and the upstairs bathroom mirrors were really dirty (toothpaste marks on one of them), so I don’t know if these were missed by cleaners. Also, there was a few bits of litter outside at seating area (muffin wrappers and a few lens wipe packets). Secondly, a suggestion was maybe to include salt/pepper and oil in the kitchen? It says oil was included so we didn’t bring any and had to ask pub for some. Overall a lovely house and would definitely be back, just a shame re a couple of points above! Thanks.

The house was great & was exactly as we had hoped. Lots of air fresheners around which made it smell lovely. The location was also very good especially having a pub across the road!

Beautiful cottage and village, ten minutes easy walk to the beach. Great coastal walks, pub is a stone’s throw but drinks was very expensive so we only had one there! The cottage is very spacious and plenty of room for six people, the bedrooms was lovely and the photos are true to the house! Down falls was - we was only left one dish tablet for 3 days for 6 people!
Only one tea town and one toilet roll on each toilet! No kitchen spray to clean Down.
The bathroom downstairs wasn’t very clean and so wasn’t the utility room.
There was no board games or playing cards etc which would have made a nice touch to say how much we paid! Even though I would stay again!

Good place for our family reunion over Christmas. Found the oven on the small side and dirty but we managed with the use of our own slow cooker and the microwave. Also needed a larger frying pan or a wok and more than the one tea towel provided. The driveway had a fee loose paving slabs which posed a trip hazard.
The pub just a few steps away is cosy and friendly with good food. Nice 15 minute walk down to the beach. Look into the tin church, St Marys, as you pass, so pretty. Plenty of local places to enjoy.

Very spacious house with a downstairs bedroom and bathroom perfect for my parents with 2 large upstairs bedrooms and another bathroom, beds very comfy, TVs in every room which the kids loved, open plan kitchen living room and a huge conservatory at the back with utility room. The pub over the road serves really tasty food and is open all day every day but gets very busy so booking is recommended. 15min walk to low newton beach which is lovely and has many coastal paths to enjoy. Fab time had all round

Doray house is a lovely 3 bed place with easy access to the coast across the road from the Joiners Arms. Some of the amenities were disappointing including the pillows and mattresses, and we had some minor problems which were resolved with the help of the owner.

Very spacious and well laid out. sunroom and utility room were an added bonus and all bedrooms and bathrooms were good size. Excellent location, next to a lovely pub and in walking distance to the beach. We love Newton.

Outdoor space was quite limited and a little over-looked but it didn’t matter.

Beautiful house in a beautiful area. We were attending a family wedding in a nearby venue and we couldn’t have wished for a nicer place to get ready and then spend a couple of day afterwards. Really near the beach and great walks from the front door. Kippers at The Ship in Low Newton after a walk along the coast made for a perfect day. The house was very clean and spacious with really comfy beds and nice bedding. I would recommend.

This was a great place to stay with our extended family (grandparents, children and a dog). The house is welcoming and comfortable with great places to relax and good facilities for everyone. Having the pub over the road was great for dinner (booking recommended it was busy!) The beach is walkable and is beautiful. Our queries pre arrival were responded to quickly and check in went without a hitch. Great place to stay for our trip to Northumberland and well placed for local attractions like Alnwick and Holy Island. Thank you!

Brilliant location close to great beaches, and a great Gastro Pub

We were a little let down by the cleanliness of the property on arrival. However, the house and facilities were fantastic.
There was a yogurt lid still in the fridge, and the work-surfaces could have been cleaner.

Comfortable and spacious accommodation. All three bedrooms were beautifully decorated and beds were very comfy, with ample wardrobe space and hangers.
Lounge and conservatory areas were cosy with plenty of space to grab some quiet time for reading etc.
Outdoor space which could be utilised in warmer weather and a couple of pub/ restaurants within easy walking distance.
We would definitely return.

Although the house has no view, it’s location in High Newton is excellent for exploring north or south. It’s also right on the excellent 418 bus route. Across the road The Joiners Arms serves fine food with a smile. And the property itself is warm, comfortable and extremely well-equipped.

Doray House is an immaculately presented home away from home which couldn't have provided more. There were only four of us, but there is ample space for a larger group with two incredible spacious bedrooms and one smaller one downstairs (that still has a double bed) which we used for ourselves because our elderly dog couldn't manage the stairs (foregoing the much larger rooms with sofas upstairs for her comfort!)

There is a good sized conservatory (which I don't think we even noticed when booking!) and a boot room where you'll also find a large BBQ that can be used on the stone patio outside - this too was clearly recently cleaned and all the required utensils were present.

The bathrooms were all provided with toiletries including soaps, shower gel, shampoo etc so you literally don't need to bring anything (we didn't know this, so did bring stuff) there were even copious amount of coffee capsules and some bottles of various drinks (not sure if these were left by a previous guest or part of the offer, but it's a nice touch)

Very little to be honest! It would be nice to have some grass within the property's boundary, especially as a dog friendly property, in the extreme heat we've had this weekend (unusual for the UK I'll admit) the stone patio was uncomfortably hot for paws. But I appreciate this is difficult due to the footprint of the house and surrounding area. Also, a later checkout time than 10am on a Sunday morning would be good too!

Fantastic spot only 15 minutes stroll from the beach.
Excellent property with all the home comforts you could hope for.
All instructions easy to follow and friendly cleaning staff ready to take over bang on 10am.
Doray is highly recommended for a family group outing g to the beautiful North East Coast.

As with all holiday rentals, they should really use commercial waste services, not burden already cash strapped councils whilst charging £230 a night despite their mortgage probably no more than £600 a month! The refuse bin was already full on arrival leaving us with some difficult choices not really knowing the area or what to do with overflowing bins. Thankfully the cleaning staff at departure were well humoured and didn’t mind wading through several bin bags. If anyone finds the Oven Gloves good luck to you, we had everything else but!
