Property Details

The Space
Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. In the evenings, forgo the home-cooking for a pint, delicious pub grub and live music at one of the cosy inns in town.

Neighborhood
Site of many a medieval skirmish, the Northumberland countryside is dotted with evidence of its turbulent past between Scotland and England. Crumbling castle ruins stand alongside Roman feats of engineering – Hadrian’s Wall stretches the length of the county. And there are just as many restored castles, like Alnwick and Bamburgh Castle to sample what life would have been like in the days of yore. Northumberland National Park dominates the north of the county, where Kielder Forest Park is home to all kinds of adventure sports and a dark sky park stretches over the moorlands. On the coast, fishing villages are set around cute little harbours, piled high with lobster pots. Take a boat out to the Farne Islands to spot puffins and seals, or cross the tidal causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne where a crumbling priory and clifftop castle make for dramatic sights. Just don’t let the tide catch you out.

Getting Around
The closest train station is Alnmouth, which is roughly an 8-minute drive from the property so local towns in Northumberland can easily be reached via rail.

There are a number of bus stops throughout Alnwick and the Alnwick’s main bus station is just 5 minutes away from the house. Hop on the X20 which takes you through to Newcastle with stops in beautiful areas of Northumberland like Alnmouth and Amble. The X18 route travels between Newcastle and Berwick upon Tweed with stops in Morpeth, Amble and Seahorses.

the place was lovely. went for my Dad's 80th .He loved

BUT

on arrival the key didn't work and we couldn't get in.
we called host and stay and got a Philippines call centre. she said she'd call back in 15mins.She called back after 90 mins with instructions on where to find the key. All this time my dad with mobility issues waiting outside.

after 90mins I called and got ? Luke in Richmond.
he was more helpful.
called the owner who said fiddle with the key. people have reported issues there's a nack to opening the door.

I was never able to open it but mum managed one in 20 times.

we were then told it's a functioning lock and they wouldn't be coming out to fix it.

we then managed to lock ourselves in the flat.
clearly we were going to have to leave the door open for our stay.

we called again and got the same response.if we called a lock smith ourselves that would be malicious damage.
it was only when my mum had the bright idea of calling the council to report the fire hazard being locked in did Host and stay contact the owner and arrange a locksmith.

of course the locksmith found a broken lock and couldn't understand why it hadn't been reported before.

we then spoke to a neighbour who had seen a previous guest with exactly the same problem having Driven up from the home counties.

For this reason alone a all the ago cause I would give host and stay a zero.

of course now the flat has a functioning lock.
any issues we reported following this were dealt with promptly. The flat itself was lovely.

I don't feel I can go without reporting this extremely bad and quite frankly dangerous service. the attitude being it would see. to avoid any kind of call out with phrase such legally functioning lock.

make sure you know the law.

the issue getting into the property

Beautiful location and accommodation. Area was lovely with a lot to do. Perfect for family or a group of friends. I would advise that there is only one shower in the place (en-suite to the main bathroom) and a bath in the main bathroom so be aware. Didn’t really bother us.

My family had a lovely time here, it's a fantastic space in a perfect location - 2 minutes walk away from Barter Books! Would definitely return in the future.

Location is ideal when visiting Alnwick Gardens and/or Castle. Town is absolutely lovely.

We couldn't get into the property initially as the lock jammed. We also did not get adequate support from maintenance. We eventually jimmied our way in, while trying to keep four kids from melting down after a long drive.
For a place that is sold as premium, a lot of the basics were not in order. Pink mould in the ensuite bathroom, the toilet seat was loose, broken bedside tables, extremely dirty bathroom floors. Communications from 'customer service' has been non existent and it's absolute laughable. The place looked nice but clearly focused on looking high end than being focused on ensuring that standard basics are in order.

The apartment was beautiful and well located and the kitchen was well stocked.

The apartment was very dusty and the shower room was disgustingly filthy to the point that we had to buy cleaning supplies and spend our first 2 hours cleaning it. There is a bath in the main bathroom and then a shower in the en-suite which made it difficult for 2 couples and 2 singles to shower without disturbing the guests in the main bedroom. Would make more sense to put a shower in the main bathroom.

We had a lovely time staying there, it was lovely and spacious.
The door to the flat was a little tricky to unlock at times and we had to improvise with some of the kitchen equipment.
The setting was beautiful and it was a great size space for eight adults, a toddler and three dogs.

In many ways the property is superb: it's clean and spacious, has a great double bed, a pool/snooker table, free parking, and is just a short walk into the nice town. I'd stay here again if they were to sort out the not-so-superb.

Upon arrival at the top of the stairs with our cases, the key wouldn't open the door. It took us a good 10 minutes of fumbling about with the key to get in. I reported this to the management but it was clear to me that they weren't in a position to do anything about it.
No pot towel. No washing up liquid. The tip of the snooker cue kept falling off so I had to jam it with some cardboard.
A poor show by the management if you ask me and it's almost a crime that such small details were allowed to undermine the quality of the place.

The Old Workhouse was a great venue for our family get together. First arrivals had a little trouble with the lock on the internal flat door but hosts were able to advise by phone and with a bit of 'jiggling' they got the knack of turning the key. Inside, the accommodation was beautiful and really lived up to expectation. Kitchen/dining area is perfect for big family meals and we loved the mezzanine games area with the pool table. There are so many beautiful walks and trips nearby. Walking down below Alnwick Castle on a summer evening was perfect and it's an easy drive to lovely beaches. Would definitely recommend and we hope to return in the future. Thanks all!

Beautiful apartment. Sadly for such a high end pad the cleanliness let it down. The kitchen window was dirty inside, splashes and marks all over it, the cups in the cupboard hadn’t been washed properly and some were dirty inside and out, the drinking glasses were wet and cloudy, the floor had crumbs in the kitchen and the glass dining table was marked and streaky. The ensuite bathroom had a terrible smell to it, so badly that it kept me awake even with the door closed. Something really needs to be done about that as it can’t be good for health. We were left one dishwasher tablet for 3 nights which we used on the 2nd night. If there’d been some more then I would have put the dishwasher on the morning we were leaving so the cleaners only had to unload it. I suspect this could be the reason for the dirty cups and glasses put away in the cupboard - no time to wait 2 hours for the dishwasher to do its job. Small irritations when we’d paid a lot of money but it didn’t spoil our trip.

Very stylish with 3 out of 4 lovely bedrooms, the main bedroom with 4 poster and en-suite was nice

First of all the 4th bedroom was in the lounge on an upper floor with no real privacy and difficulty in others using the lounge and kitchen when the 4th was in bed
There was only ONE shower, which was in the main bedroom en-suite that all 4 guests had to use on a rota. There was and still is plenty of room to install a shower in the main bathroom

Cleaning around the single shower was poor including the shower head itself

Lastly there was a complete mix of furniture from old and tired to modern

This was a great place 2 stay. We were 2 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs. We all had plenty of space and the upstairs landing worked well for the kids base so the adults and dogs could have some peace in the main lounge.
Great location, can walk into town, castle and Lidl - would definitely come back.

Location

It wasn’t child friendly and there was no travel cot or high chair nor were the host prepared to provide one for our stay

Gail

26/08/2023

Location was great. It had everything we needed for our stay, as well as character, comfort, and clean and spacious rooms. Kitchen was well equipped with everything, and there was a dishwasher and washing machine on site.

The 4th bedroom is on the mezzanine level and had nowhere near the same privacy as the other bedrooms.
There is only one shower and it’s in the en-suite bedroom.
One of our party was locked in the en-suite bathroom for an hour when the handle fell off the door. We laughed about it at the time until I spotted a review from a YEAR ago which highlighted the same problem with the lock.
Too many emails from Host and Stay prior to our arrival

Beautiful

Not easy to find as Not called the old workhouse & if you don’t arrive in a car you would never find the key lock

Jones

01/08/2023

Location is excellent and only a 10 minutes walk to Alnwick Castle.

In the instructions it explained to collect the keys from the key box. What they did not explain was the key box was at the car parking space. We only found this out 20 minutes after arriving as another guest was going to their car and told us where it was. Very misleading and not what you need after a 7 hour drive. The wording needs to be changed for arrival.
Then the kids wanted to play pool but there were no cue tips on the cues. We messaged the property and they didn't understand what we meant, we ended up buying some so the kids could play. The 4th bedroom is NOT a bedroom but a bed in the play room area. No privacy so the guests had to change in another bedroom and it is a very small double bed so one of our guests ended up sleeping on an uncomfortable sofa. Only one shower which is a pain for 8 people. The bathroom is huge and could easily have had another shower, poor planning.

Location, stylish.

The cordless hoover was left to use but the dust collection part but was completely full. Obviously hadn’t been emptied for a long time. I normally give a quick hoover before I leave but didn’t want to pull out old dirt and empty the hoover first. Some of the cutlery and utensils were grubby. Had probably been through the dishwasher but no one had checked for food being stuck on.

Though apartment was pleasant and the location excellent, we would not choose to stay in any property managed by Host & Stay. We stayed for 10 nights and the small washer/dryer was impractical for use by 7 adults & 2 children. Our repeated email requests for a rack for drying clothes was never answered. We also asked for a set of clean towels for each guest half-way during our stay and we were told we would have to pay for delivery. Home Stay continue to email us about their properties but they were not good at handling what we believe to be reasonable requests based on our experience staying in other properties. Also, it would be helpful to have away to shower in the main bathroom.

We all had a lovely stay, accommodation just as the photos, plenty of hot water for showers. Easy to walk into Alnwick for restaurants (advised to book ahead as turning people away as fully booked) and walking distance to gardens and castle.

Absolutely beautiful property with lots of light and space. The kitchen was particularly well-equipped for a large group, including having two ovens. Very comfortable beds and lots of nice little touches.

28/04/2023

Great property with fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, parking, and good living space.
The mezzanine bed is fine for two adults.
There is only one shower and this is within the en-suite bedroom. The main bathroom only has a toilet, sink and bath, no shower. Not particularly practical for a large group.
Lovely area, lots to see an do in Alnwick and local surroundings.
Would be useful to have two sets of keys, all be it we did not ask!

Rob

12/04/2023

Excellent location and well equipped. We used the thermostat to control the temperature and this worked very well as weather during our stay was quite changeable. Good accommodation for 6 people with the mezzanine floor and pool table working extremely well for our family plus partners group.

What could be improved? A welcome pack, doesn’t have to be big, would have been a nice touch, as many of your guests have already mentioned another shower would definitely have been beneficial and lastly being told to strip our beds because of Covid-19 really?! If anything it forced us to notice marks that perhaps you would prefer your guests not to see! And we didn’t have bath robes not a problem unless you think we’ve taken them and charge us £70 per robe.

02/01/2023

The apartment is clean and spacious and is close to amenities in Alnwick City Centre. A 2 minute walk to the infamous Barter Books. The rooms were spacious and had enough equipment for cooking and rainy days!
There are a few things in the apartment that need fixing and sprucing up. The first floor mezzanine isn't suitable as a bedroom due to the lack of privacy and open plan setting. It lacks child safety features on both sets of stairs on either side of the room so doesn't suit children or adults as a bedroom. It does make a good child play room (watch your heads adults! Low beams!)
As this is a first floor apartment, I wouldn't advise taking dogs as theres no access to a garden and due to the cream carpets we were dubious to have our dogs wandering the flat much which was dissapointing.
A nice stay for those who want to be in the heart of Alnwick.

The apartment was as beautiful as it looked in the photos, just stunning. Very handy location for the town and also The Treehouse restaurant in Alnwick Gardens. Very spacious with superb attention to detail throughout. The bookshop is just across the road along with a supermarket. Great facilities.

I would have preferred a full size ironing board and iron rather than the tiny one available

We had a fantastic stay in The Old Workhouse. The place was beautifully furnished, clean and wonderfully warm when the fire was going. We had a small issue with the washing machine, but the host quickly resolved it whilst we were out for lunch. I would highly recommend this place as a base for anyone interested in visiting Alnwick and the surrounding areas. Thank you

16/10/2022

Location good, property very nice

Property is advertised for 8 people. Main bedroom with en-suite very good. I do feel the other 2 bedrooms would benefit massively for Kingsize beds as there is room abd the bathroom is lovely but no shower which was poor all 6 of our guests used the en-suite shower even a shower over the bath would have been a help. But property very nice

Beautiful apartment, really comfortable beds, very clean. Odd having just one shower and that`s in the master bedroom.
The kitchen was really well equipped and we loved the small pool table.
Loved the location, just over the road from the huge second hand bookshop, 5 minute walk into town. Nice to have a selection of games to play

We couldn`t get the washing machine to work, nor figure out the heating system so we did feel cold at times. Would have been good to have a really big saucepan

Diane

09/09/2022

The property was clean, very spacious and well equipped. Parking was easy and the location was excellent with only a short walk into the town centre and Alnwick Castle and Gardens.

The bedroom on the mezzanine level obviously means access to the kitchen and living area is restricted, as we expected but it came as a surprise that it is impossible to keep the light out as the blind cord above the sink in the kitchen cannot be accessed. The cord is on the opposite side to where the window opens and the window will not open fully because of the tap, so it is not feasible to close the blind even if you have someone in your party who is actually tall enough to reach over the kitchen sink. Poor planning. If you are going to use this room, take an eye mask and ear plugs. There is only one shower (which all of us ended up using) and the water temperature fluctuates a bit. There is no shower attachment at all on the bath tub in the main bathroom and the one person who tried a bath said the water wasn't very hot. One of the arms on the chaise longue in the master bedroom is missing (snapped off) and no bathrobes were provided. We didn't want bathrobes but were perturbed by a notice saying that they were provided and that guests would be charged for taking them home. Just a bit unsettling.

Wonderful flat in a great location. With excellent facilities and furnished to a very high standard. Two parking spaces- so plenty of parking. I would recommend this place for anyone looking to stay in Alnwick or surrounding area. Very close to Alnwick centre for dinner and drinks which you can walk in. Would definitely stay at this place again. Had a great time here. ?

The property was lovely (slight updating need) great location for exploring Alnwick, we all enjoyed our stay.

There are 2 bathrooms but only 1 shower (which was in the en-suite) which isn’t great for 8 adults.
Things in the property need updating, eg chairs around dining table are worn and look terrible. Toilet in the en-suite was wobbly and the lock/handle kept falling off the en-suite door.

12/06/2022

location was great. lovely sitting - kitchen area lends itself to socialising with family and friends - just needed bigger sofas. Host and
Stay were very good at reacting to any issue, but don't think they had a full picture of the property details.

not identified that the 4th bed was not actually in a room, no mention of this on website, should have suspected as no floor plan. Lack of
showers only one was in en-suite in one bedroom, not really enough for 8 adults. Not enough seating for 8 people either to eat at table
(but did bring a couple of chairs from bedrooms, the table chairs are in desperate need of replacement or refurbishment. Signage on
the entrance to the parking area would have helped, it took us a while to identify the property. promise of bathrobes for quests were
not available.

Susan

02/06/2022

The property is beautiful - very tastefully renovated with lots of room. The master bedroom is gorgeous with an extra large king-sized bed and a very good shower In the bathroom. The kitchen was very well appointed with everything necessary.
The location is great with an easy walk into the village of Alnwick which is charming and, as a bonus, it is just across the street from the wonderful, secondhand bookshop, Barter Books, where you can also have breakfast if you are feeling too lazy to cook.

I didn’t like being asked to verify my identity about 10 days before arrival. It seemed intrusive and felt as if the customer had no rights when they asked you to take photos at the beginning and end of your stay so any damage could be verified. I found that this was optional so I didn’t do it. However, on arrival, it made me feel that I might be accused of breaking things that were already damaged so I wasted time taking photos of existing damage and sending them to the booking agent. There was also an instruction sheet saying that the monogrammed bathrobes could be bought for 70 pounds a piece but there were none in the apartment. Apparently they had been removed so the instruction sheet should be updated.
The double beds in the other rooms were on the small size - fine if you are used to that. Another separate toilet would have been great.

05/04/2022

Beautiful property, clean, bright, cosy and homely.
The area is so quiet and a nice walking distance from the town.
Lots of coffee and tea to choose from.

I would mention that the key pickup is where you park your car, it was a little confusing.
The only shower access is in the bedoom ensuite. The main bathroom would be great with a shower when up to 8 guests can stay at the property.
Hooks would be really great for coats, towels etc.
As there are no blinds in the living space it is bright when sleeping in the mezzanine or watching TV.
The mezzanine could do with a wall mirror as there was a lot of up and down the stairs so I could use one when getting ready.
I hope this honest feedback is helpful

Gillian

16/03/2022

The old workhouse is fabulous! We stayed here as a group of 7, and the facilities provided us with the perfect place for our family get together to celebrate two special birthdays. The mezzanine level with pool table was brilliant - we spent most of our evenings in this area. We liked the layout of the rooms to allow our group to still have some privacy. The location is perfect - very quiet area, yet just a short walk round the corner to Barters Books and a gentle 10 minute walk into town/Alnwick Gardens.

We experienced a few little niggles with this property.

There are no window coverings in the open plan living area/mezzanine area, which meant the guests sleeping in the mezzanine area had an early wake up call due to the light streaming in. There was also no wardrobe/hanging rail for clothes in this sleeping area which meant they had to put their things in one of the other rooms being occupied by other guests.
No bedside lamp in one of the bedrooms, so we moved one from another area.
Found it strange that the accommodation sleeps 8 people, yet the dining table only seats 6. We did bring through a dressing table chair to accommodate us all around the table to eat together.

Trevor

01/03/2022

Lovely and spacious. Great location for walking into the centre.

The property can sleep up to 8. There is only one shower though in the en-suite which isn’t ideal. The property would benefit from an additional shower in the bathroom.

The rooms are lovely and spacious. The beds are only doubles…. King beds would have made the stay far more comfortable and would easily fit in the rooms.

The place is decorated and furnished to a very high standard with plenty of space for a large group. the layout is great for a sociable atmosphere, the pool table and other games on the 2nd floor were a great addition. the location is ideal only a short walk onto Alnwicks Main Street. communication with the host was great. We hope to return in the future

Beautiful apartment and location. Lots of games provided and the pool table of course. We also loved the old books and letters. Very comfortable and just a nice place to spend time.

There should be a welcome pack that explains how to use the heating and fire and maybe lists the local attractions. We had to figure out the fire and heating ourselves.
No corkscrew!
