Neighborhood
Middlesmoor is a hilltop village perched on the end of a ridge overlooking Nidderdale with fine views extending Gouthwaite Reservoir. Its 1864 church occupies a commanding position in front of the village at the top of the hill and can be seen for miles around. The village has cobbled streets and stone cottages and with its lofty position at the head of the Dale is one of the most picturesque in the Dales area.

The property is surrounded with exceptional views and stunning moorland. Located on the Nidderdale Way, you can walk for miles with places such as Scar House Reservoir and Masham Moor.

If you fancy an outdoor activity you can visit How Stean Gorge Activity Centre. Experience a full day of adventure with one of their readymade packages or partake in a single activity if you want to try something specific. Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Canoeing, Caving and Mountain Biking are all on their extensive list of activities.

How Stean Gorge is well known in Yorkshire for being one of the best days out for all ages. Featured on BBC’s Countryfile, this is a place not to be missed.

If you are travelling with children, you could take a visit to see the Nidderdale Llamas or visit Studfold Adventure Trail. This is a wonderful play and discovery experience for toddlers and young children where they can explore nature and run wild in the beautiful setting of the Yorkshire Dales.

If you want to visit some local towns and villages, Pateley Bridge is a lovely little Yorkshire Dales town with a pretty high street, lined with independent shops and delightful eateries.

Ripon is approximately 20 miles away. This little city has a thriving market place and a magnificent cathedral, although it can be very busy, it will earn a place in any visitor’s heart.

Harrogate is a 45-minute drive away and always has a calendar full of exciting events. Wander round the Victorian spa town or book yourself onto a foodie tour or wellness weekend, there is something for everyone here.

If you prefer to stay local and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Middlesmoor you can enjoy relaxing days with good food. At The Crown Hotel in the village you can enjoy home cooked food and local ales. Venture a little further afield to Lofthouse and visit another Crown Hotel. Experience the rustic charm and open fires indoors or venture outside on those warmer days and dine al fresco.

Other nearby points of interest include Swinton Park Estate, Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal, Brimham Rocks, Coldstones Cut, Stump Cross Caverns, and the towns of Masham and Grassington.

Getting Around
Clackgill Cottage is set in a rural area with limited public transport so we highly recommend a car for exploring the local area.

You can use the Leeds-Morecambe line and the famous Leeds-Settle-Carlisle line which give fantastic access to the Dales on one of the most spectacular train journeys in England. The closest train station to access the railway can be found in Skipton, a 50-minute drive from Clackgill Cottage.

Enjoy the beautiful countryside as you cross valleys, rise up over hills and wind round the country roads.

We stayed in Clackgill Cottage as an extended family; me, husband and our kids, my brother and his family and my parents. It was so spacious despite being maximum occupancy. Sometimes you're really squeezing into a space if you take as many people as the listing says, but we had a bedroom per couple and a room for the kids.
We had some lovely days out, and were hardly even in the cottage at all really which is actually a bit of a shame! There were some great walks right on the door step but we also ventured further afield with a day in Ripon checking out the museums and cathedral, and we went TO Druid's Temple which was gorgeous to walk around.
It was just really nice to spend time together as a wider family all in one place and without the usual pressures of day to day life.
The listing says no travel cot but we did actually find one under the bed (took our own anyway but good to know in a pinch!)

Clackgill Cottage is a relatively new house and is in excellent condition. Its neutral pallete is tasteful and it has a very well equipped kitchen which meant I could cater for 8 people each day without a problem.
The linens and towels are of excellent quality and the open plan kitchen diner gave plenty of space for us all to sit round to eat and play games.
The pub a few steps away serves great food. Just be aware that you are a long way from shops and petrol, the closest being Pately Bridge - a 25 minute drive away, so you need to plan ahead.

The (new-build) house was simply and beautifully decorated and it felt special straight away. A previous review mentioned it seeming smaller than the photos but we thought it was very spacious...I guess it depends on where you live normally. It had everything that we could have wanted / needed. Bathrooms were lovely and beds very comfortable. Host and Stay were very responsive. The views from the bedroom windows were amazing. It's a perfect place if you like walking: no need to drive anywhere. We ate sunday lunch in the village pub; the slow-roasted lamb was incredible. The Crown is very much a local's pub (we watched the Euro football final with a lively crowd in there), which we liked, but if you want a posher foodie place you'd need to drive.
The listing said it had an EV charger but it doesn't. There are some listed locally in the Host and Stay information pack, but they are a drive away. Note also that the last bit of hill up into the village is VERY steep.

We liked the views, the cottage.

The snug not really big enough to seat 8 people comfortably at the same time.
The linked beds hadn't been unlinked to make twin single beds, even though I had requested this to be done, well in advance on 10th March 2024, plus to confirm there would also be a 12 year old child as well as 7 adults staying, the lady I spoke to at Host and Stay, told me she had put my request forward for the beds to be unlinked for our stay, and that there would be no problem with the extra person, as the cottage sleeps 8 people., I had spoken to Host & Stay via telephone on 10th March 2024, and was advised to call them again two days prior to our stay at the cottage, to make sure my request had been carried out regarding UNLINKING the beds. I rang Host and Stay, on Thursday 4th July 2024 (our stay was 6th July 2024), as I had been asked to do, this was a REMINDER to confirm the beds are unlinked. This was NOT a late request as stated in your emails. Communication was rubbish. This caused an inconvenience to our stay, as two of the male adult guests didn't have a single bed each to sleep in, which they needed., therefore, other arrangements had to be made.
After calling Host & Stay on the Friday 5th July 2024 and again on the day of our holiday 6th July 2024, the female I spoke to promised to call me back, she did not fulfil these promises - twice.
Also, I received an Email on the Saturday evening, saying, if we left the keys in the keysafe, presumably if we were out for the day, on the Sunday, somebody may come to the cottage to unlink the beds. We were in the cottage all day and nobody called at the cottage.

Very comfortable house, beautifully furnished. Fully equipped kitchen. Top quality bedding and showers. Great communication with the owner. All in all, would highly recommend this for a peaceful getaway.
Lounge a bit small for 8 people. Remote location.

Very nice, well presented, clean and well appointed house. All mod cons. Comfy beds. Loads of kitchen equipment.
Location is lovely, with a hospitable pub around the corner where we had two excellent dinners (note no food being served Sunday or Monday). Seems like a lot of houses in the village are AirBnBs.
Things to improve: The handle on the inside of the downstairs loo was broken so you couldn’t exit once inside! We had to rescue one of our party. Hosts reacted quickly and offered to fix it while we were staying there, but we elected to let them do it after we left. The floor mat behind the front door stops the cloakroom door opening. Our request to use the garage, made and approved well prior to arrival, turned into a debacle which was sorted after two days, but unnecessarily painful.
Things to note: The campsite in the field to the rear of the property directly overlooks the rear bedrooms from 10 yards away. No food shop in the village so buy at Pately Bridge (pie shop!!)

Lovely stay here.
Pros:
Great location, easy to find and very beautiful views, the host had taken the time to decorate the house nicely and we felt very much at home, nice toiletries, well stocked kitchen (e.g. Dishes for children and lots of pots, pans) and anything else you could need. Lovely little pub around the corner, and only 20 minute drive from shops. Good communication during the stay.
Cons:
Communication when booking was strange, booked as the description said there would be a cot and stair gate upon request, when I booked and requested this I was told it was incorrectly advertised, I brought my own travel cot and when I arrived there was one here! A couple off ad hoc cleanliness issues, air fryer hasn't been cleaned, a couple of the towels smelled a little musty, and I found a large piece of broken glass by my bed (which was alarming because I was staying with a toddler), but the rest of the place was nice and clean.
I'd recommend the place, and would stay again.

Stayed for 3 wonderful nights during the big freeze but the house was toasty warm and cosy. A beautiful cottage with three spacious bedrooms and the fourth a good size for bunk beds.
The four of us came here for a sewing retreat and the enormous kitchen was perfect for us. It was also the most well appointed kitchen I've ever stayed in!
We had a blissful time and will be booking again very soon!
