Neighborhood
Carlin How is a small village located in North Yorkshire, just four miles from the popular seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. The village is home to convenient amenities including a convenience store, a social club and a number of takeaways. When staying here, you’ll be ideally situated to explore beauty spots in North Yorkshire including the coastline and the North York Moors. The Railway Retreat is a 30-minute walk from Skinningrove beach so you’re within walking distance of the sea.

Head to Saltburn and take the oldest functioning cliff lift in the UK down to the promenade and you’ll arrive at the 208-metre pier which stretches out into the sea. The promenade has numerous shops, takeaways, cafes, restaurants, and the Pier’s amusement arcade for the kids. The long sandy shores are overlooked by colourful boutique beach huts and high cliffs tower in the distance.

Saltburn has plenty of beautiful walks too. The Valley Gardens are a maze of paths and tracks which wind through the flowers and woodland. If you want to explore further, The Cleveland Way National Trail is over 100 miles long and the lovely Saltburn is featured. If you fancy a 17.5 mile jaunt, start at Saltburn and walk your way to Sandsend. This walk is a great way to explore the North Yorkshire coastline and the views are beautiful!

Whitby is also within a 30-minute drive from the village. Walk along Church Street and you’ll wind up at the East bank where you’ll find narrow mediaeval streets dotted with boutiques, pubs and fish restaurants. Climb the famous 199 steps up to the Church of Saint Mary. You can also discover the renowned ruined Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s gothic novel ‘Dracula’.

Walk over the swing bridge which sits over the River Esk and you’ll find yourself at the West side of town. It’s here you can discover cosy pubs, fun arcades and even more fish restaurants! Continue along the lively road until you reach the beautiful, blue flag West Cliff Beach which is lined with idyllic beach huts.

Lovely little cottage, really homely and comfortable, everything was there, great little kitchen, back yard could do with a little attention but it was cute! Only one problem, as a disabled person the stairs were a little steep, but I managed, would recommend highly

Nothing

The cottage was cosy and comfortable! All possible equipment and furnishings were clean!

The patio/yard are at the rear of the property could have done with a little refreshing and more attention! As an example the walls could have done with being refreshed! The location was not good, also the main road noisy all day and most of the night! It was downheartening seeing all of the factories and how the area was clearly an old village where there did not seem to be any pride, community wise!

Easy short drive from Saltburn. Great for a couple of nights. Price reflects the house, clean and well presented, some road noise which we are not used to.

The Railway Cottage had everything we needed for our family weekend break. Parking directly outside on the busy road was easy and convenient (a little noisy inside at times). The fast internet connection was appreciated. Host and Stay were quick to respond to all our messages and provided a useful guide for the property and surrounding area pre-arrival.

Nice comfy house with secure courtyard and fencing with gate at front of house.
Provision of little extras in the kitchen such as washing up liquid, cloth, washing machine pads if needed. Milk coffee tea sachets and bathroom shower cremes and shampoo. Thank you ?

Didn't like the main road. ?
Bedroom would benefit from blackout blinds / curtains.

Close to where family live. Neighbour was nice.

Boiler makes banging noises in the middle of the night. Damp, musty smell. Paint or plaster lifting in the dining room.

The booking procedure drove me to distraction! After booking and giving our credit card details to Booking.com, we received about twenty messages from the hosting agent. Almost each one was from a different person, although they told me that they were automated. Firstly, they wanted £250 security deposit or that I buy an insurance policy to cover any damage that we might cause during our stay. I told them that I already have liability insurance, which would cover any damage, but that wasn't accepted. I eventually bought another insurance policy from them. Then I had to log into their website, to verify our identity. Each message that they sent to me, claiming to have a link, didn't have one. Eventually, I had to give my personal email address, to allow me to receive a link, to verify my details. Even after doing all that, I continued to be bombarded with useless messages asking for the information that I'd already given. At this point, if I'd have been able to cancel without penalty, I would have done!
