Location of property is exceptional - close to harbour, extensive parking and numerous bars and restaurants

The top floor room did not appear to have seen a cleaner for a long time, including what seemed like discarded knickers in the corner of the room! A suggested re-clean the following day provided little comfort - presumably we were supposed to share one bed with our friends on the first night!! - and therefore we purchased our own cleaning materials and cleaned the room ourselves.

The cottage was cosy and small. The furniture (2 chairs) were not a fab choice but dis the trick. The stairs were VERY steap and the 3rd step from the bottom was a little tricky. But all in all it wasn’t bad at all

A plate was dirty and placed back in the cupboard (not the end of the world cos we just cleaned it).
Stairs were slightly tricky.
Nxt door bars were banging music til about 11pm (ish) the alley was a cut through for drinkers who could be noisy. The steps at the end was a place were drinkers who wanted to smoke gathered (some smoking illegal substances).
But nothing too bad.

We left early and found somewhere else to stay. The place was filthy, even after being forced to pay a £60 cleaning fee. Dirty walls, damp, smelly fridge, chipped walls, drainage problems and broken bed.
Neighbours fighting next door, angry exchanges, plates smashing etc. Not a safe place for young children.

Loved the location and facilities. Bedrooms nice and big and lovely deco. Downstairs very small but was ok for us and does show on the photos so was aware of the size.

This property was NOT clean, very disappointing to say that i paid a £60.00 cleaning fee and £40.00 service fee. Then i had to pay another £25.00 not refundable for a damage waiver!!!! If they are paying somebody to clean this property then i would have a word with them because it was not to a good standard.

Also no parking unless you park miles away and find free parking, be aware that you will have to pay to park in the pay and display at £13.00 daily.

Location good and really clean.

We were all cold during the stay. Not allowed to turn heating up. It rained all day and night that stay and when we got back in the evening we were all freezing....getting into a cold bed after being out in the rain is not nice.

Check in isn't till 4pm....late really and check out 10am too early.

Had to pay an extra £25 on top of the booking cost for insurance which was non refundable. It was that or pay I think £200 pound and the wording was.....we should get the money back within 2 weeks minus £10 admin. It would be easy once we had left for the owner to say any damage done and keep the money hence paid the £25....reluctantly

central location

property very badly damaged & dirty. Not as description or as photos - would not recommend unless numerous repairs & maintenance undertaken to the interior of this cottage. Street not very nice & dirty also. Don’t know why forced to pay accident waiver fee on top of cottage price when the property was so badly maintained & damaged on our arrival. Trying to get refund as did not stay for full duration due to poor standards. Would not recommend!

We liked the location

Staircase very bad had a incident on the first night when I could not manage the stairs where the top stair turned which led to ringing paramedics for help as my husband could not get me up from the top stair as need a knee replacement my other friends had gone to bed so they could not help and.1 of them had just had a hip replacement if there had been a picture of the stairs we would not have booked

Joanne

12/06/2024

I felt the location was brilliant. Quiet. and close to everything . The inside of the property was a little smaller than I thought. The stairs had not been hoovered in ages and were quite steep and uneven, especially at the top. had to go down sideways. would be good for a young couple with no pets. the description did not say there would be a back yard but I thought there would be. so no where for dogs to go, it's a back to back property with only the front door. The rest of the property was clean. it's suitable for a weekend break. I would go back but without the dog.

Great place to stay! Perfect location literally a few minutes walking distance to everything. Only downside was the parking however we got lucky to park at the train station for the duration of our trip (although it cost us £30 for the whole time).

We had a great stay in Whitby. The only problem we had was before the stay. From start to arrival I kept finding more charges and problems with parking. I was told the price to stay each day. Then when you go through to pay you get a cleaning charge that was not mentioned. Ok then a few days before we leave I get a damaged charge which I have not paid before. Then on the day we leave to go to whitby we are told that I can not park outside the property as it said I could. I parked across the road at £10 a day. The free parking that we did find cards for in the property was for to far away . We loved the house very comfortable, and a great location in whitby. Had a good time. But not happy with run up to going.

Lovely little place. Not much space in living area but a traditional old cottage renovated to a very good standard. Bed comfortable and sheets lovely and fresh as was the towels. Nice little extras such as milk, coffee, tea and plenty of toilet paper. All nice touches that you don’t always find. Music from Station Inn on Friday night was a bit loud but all quiet at 11.30 pm so not a big deal at all. Definitely recommend and will be back to stay again!

Katie

05/01/2024

Central location but right next door to one of the pubs - music so loud you can sing along! Perfect if you’re visiting for a lively weekend but not so much if you like an early night.

There were some issues with overflow sewerage - meaning the cottage was only accessible from one side.

25/08/2023

The negatives are late check in and early check out. 4 pm check in reflects most of the day you cant even enjoy the accomodation youve paid for . If people have to check out at 10 am why cant you get in until 4pm ? It doesnt take 6 hours to clean up!
Also car parking means having to hump cases and children quite a distance to and from the car to house.
The steep stairs are a safety issue involving children or anyone slightly infirm and should be emphasised accordingly.
The good points are location for walking around Whitby and its clean , but cleanliness is to be expected of any air bnb.

Molly

24/08/2023

I would visit this place again. It was lovely.

Jonny

21/08/2023

We really enjoyed our stay and the cottage was lovely, however we found it really stressful finding the place and unloading if you arrive in a car due to the fact that the cottage is in an alley way and to unload you have to negotiate a pedestrian precinct. This wasn’t made clear to us as the online guide doesn’t really explain adequately how to find the place. We had to get my wife to find the place whilst we negotiated a busy town centre. We then had to park in the station car park and run our bags across the road. Parking after we had unloaded was really hard to come across. We had to park the car nearly a mile away from the cottage. We were travelling with our elderly relatives and there is no way that they would have been able to park that far away and then walk back. This cottage would be best suited to travellers who are either younger or are travelling by train. Also there wasn’t enough cutlery for 4 people and there was no hand wash in either of the 2 bathrooms.

28/07/2023

Location was perfect, next to train and bus station so we didn't have to go far with our luggage. Was expecting it to be noisy at night because of the location but the only noise came from the seagulls! House was well equipped with everything we needed and there was a supermarket right across the road. Host and stay were extremely helpful and always responded promptly to any queries I had.

Didn't affect us but the staircase could be an issue for some as it was very steep and narrow.

Lisa

28/07/2023

Really lovely cottage in the centre with everything within walking distance, perfect for our overnight stay however due to the location we wouldn’t have wanted to stay longer. We were aware it could be noisy but hadn’t thought how warm it would be when unable to open the windows.
Apart from that it was spotlessly clean and in a great location

Simon

20/07/2023

The cottage straight away was impressive , lovely decor, kitchen & 2 bathrooms were good.
Location was probably ideal fir Whitby.
Very peaceful and quiet yet nearly on top of where you need to be.
Amenities were good with everything we needed fir three nights also a local supermarket within 3 minute walk if you’ve forgotten anything .
Would definitely stay here again and use host and stay in the future

17/07/2023

Giovanna

05/07/2023

I loved the place and its décor and the location. We stayed only one night but it would have been perfect for a longer stay, the space was good and it was equipped with everything you may need, even a dishwasher. We were 2 couples and a baby and having a common space but 2 bathroom was amazing.
Only down point was that I found hair on the sink and the floor in one of the bathroom and the carpet hadn't been hoovered properly, with bits all over; apart for that it was clean.

Perfect location opposite the harbour, the only thing for us was the noise at night as it’s right next to a lively bar and trying to find it and get everything to the house was a bit of a nightmare but having been there if we were to go again would be easier! super lovely apartment. Nice and clean with all modern decor. Carpets were soft and beds were comfy. Well stocked kitchen, dishwasher etc. and great location! only little grumbles were how small it was and steep stairs up to the top bedroom. Lovely cottage, and really nice decor.

It was a very cold week and the cottage was quite cold. Kept trying to turn the heating up but it was constantly changed back remotely. Wonderful place to stay, beautiful decoration! Very central and close to all attractions and shops, but this does mean there was bit of noise from the next door pub on the Friday night but that’s to be expected with the central location. Very close to the train station and there’s lots of parking nearby. Co-op is right opposite also.

Lots of amenities in the kitchen and the bathrooms and beds were very comfy.

Overall great stay

Emma

26/02/2023

The house was in a great location as you literally stepped out into restaurants and bars. It was also great having two ensuite bedrooms of decent sizes. There were a couple of downsides but not enough to reduce the value for money. Firstly, the convenience of being close to bars and pubs also means that it is very loud at night! Secondly, the house felt like it needed a bit of tlc in places.

Jan

24/02/2023

We had a lovely 3 night stay. Although compact, the cottage felt luxurious. The positioning couldn’t be more central - it was lovely to easily pop back to the cottage throughout the day. This did however make for a not so peaceful stay, particularly in the evenings. We were aware of the location beforehand, so we were prepared for this, and it didn’t spoil our holiday.

The property was warm and cozy, decor was lovely, Everything was provided for tea and coffee.

I was not happy that a THIRD party take a non refundable admin. charge after the booking is confirmed .Not normal practise for my Booking. Com bookings.

lovely, modern and clean and the location is perfect!

the stairs are quite dangerous I slipped down them twice and my partner was nearly caught out by them aswel. I would say they aren’t suitable for people less mobile.

Smaller than expected, parking not great which was a pain but the co-op opposite is £10 a day so wasn’t too far away. Stairs are slightly dangerous, wouldn’t recommend if taking kids/baby. Had a couple of issues with the electrics when first got there but they got it sorted for us very quickly. Other than that an enjoyable experience, would just suit a couple more than a family

Home Truths

This property doesn't have on site parking but free on street parking can be found on a first come, first served basis roughly 10-minutes from the cottage.

Please note that the staircases at Grumbles Cottage are steep and may not be suitable for those with limited mobility.

Due to the nature of the cottage, it is on the cosy side.
