Nice house, easy to walk into town. However the downstairs area hadn't been vacuumed. The floors and chairs were full of crumbs and a few dog biscuits and we had to mop down the outside table and chairs too before we could use them. There was a dribble of washing up liquid provided, but no other cleaning products, not even a dustpan or broom. Slightly disappointing, as the cleaning fee was listed as £125. One of the TV remote controls was missing...we reported this immediately and were told it would be sorted out the next day, but nothing happened all week. The house was lovely otherwise and the location was great.

A lovely place with plenty of space for groups or larger families. All appliances and amenities worked well, and no issues with hot water even with multiple people using showers. Good location with just a short walk into the main town area, but peaceful and private.

Lovely house, great location, generally well equipped.

Hoggarths Retreat is very well placed for a holiday in Whitby. It has one parking space which is easy for accessibility. The house is warm and comfortable with a small private patio. It is in a quiet spot, peaceful and well equipped.

The location was great. Communication was brilliant.
Little touches like tea coffee sugar and milk provided. Toiletries in the bathrooms. Plenty of clean towels.

It’s in desperate need of a thorough deep clean. The oven was dirty, the sofa was grubby and stained, as was the carpet. The bathrooms weren’t cleaned properly. Some of the toilet seats were loose, the tap next to the free standing bath was loose and didn’t really work. The kitchen ceiling needs urgent attention as there must’ve been water damage and has a botched unsightly repair. The smaller bed on the first floor couldn’t be used as the mattress springs are broken. The cords on the blinds in some rooms are broken. The whole place was grubby and needs some tlc.

Really lovely house in a perfect location to wander into Whitby. It was really clean and modern, all the rooms were spacious and the beds were very comfy.
The only thing would be one parking space for a house that can have four or more couples isn’t ideal, as finding spaces away from the property isn’t easy. Obviously this isn’t something the hosts can change but it does need to be thought of when booking if any guests may struggle.

Good space and location, nice, clean and well stocked

Think the bed in the first bedroom could do with mattress change but nothing else

Location and size and comfort

Property didn't appear to have been fully cleaned on arrival - there were some newish stains on the carpets - the last occupants tin foil and crumbs remnants were still in the oven so we didn't use that and floors didn't appear to have been completed - having said that beds were lovely and comfy etc and it may have been an issue as originally my arrival time was 7.00 pm and we then brought that forward - although we did inform the host and had confirmation the property would be ready for 4.00 pm

Great place, good location, would visit again...

Location was excellent beautiful house with plenty of space and bathrooms

On arrival the house was very cold due to the heating not working, the house was not very clean on arrival all the pots and pans were filthy, the freezer was totally frozen up hence the door wouldn’t shut properly, one of the hairdryers didn’t work.

Excellent location

Was clean but could have been done with a deeper clean

Really enjoyed our stay.. Great location and hosts were brilliant
Would book again

We liked the location , it was 5 mins walk into the centre of Whitby very convenient. The beds were very comfy , with nice clean bedding. We liked the fact that 3 bedrooms were en suite , there was a downstairs toilet too. The only cooking we did was to make bacon sandwiches on the Saturday and Sunday morning so cant really comment on the cooking side. We had some nice meals out , White Horse and Griffin and Abbey Wharf and visited lots of nice pubs.

There was a terrible smell when we entered the property , smelt like mucky and damp , we opened all windows and doors , think the source of it was the mucky mop and bucket left in kitchen, put it outside and smell went.
The carpets especially the lounge had lots of stains on it , its about 10ft square , would cost a couple of hundred quid to replace. The sofa also had stains on it . The lounge area is not big enough if there are 8 adults , there were 6 of us and it was a squash.
The bedrooms had no drawers or wardrobes, 3 of the bedrooms had a small rail with a few coathangers on them , could have done with a lot more hangars, looked in shops in whitby to buy some but couldnt find any . We think there could have at least been drawers at the sides of the bed. Fortunately we had a spare bedroom so we was able to put our bags etc in there, one of my sons and girlfriends lived out of their bags. We stayed in this house 4/5 years ago and feel it really needs a bit of TLC, perhaps a lick of paint and some deep cleaning. All in all we had a great time in Whitby and would probably stay there again if a few minor improvements are made. If it was my property i think just a few minor adjustments would make it so much better !

Breakfast N/A
Location was very good.

A couple of niggles. The dishwasher dispenser did not work properly. I could not get the TV working as it should. The heating requires a bit more info as the weather is turning colder.

It was comfy and well equipped. Lots of bathrooms!

The admin. After booking through booking.com, they have their own booking form and there is a non-returnable £10 admin fee for a returnable deposit or pay a £15 insurance deal. Lots of emails. For a 2 night stay there was 1 dishwasher tablet, and 1 tea towel. No hand towel in the downstairs loo. Hair dryer in my room didn't work. Just seemed too much like hard work to stay there and not particularly welcoming. On day of departure got an email reminding us to go by 10am and saying the cleaner would be round shortly afterwards to check and if we were still there we would be charged extra - really! Have a bit of confidence in your cusomers. We aren't the enemy. I won't be going with this company again - I want to be somewhere for a restful stay.

The house was well presented and clean location was good (no uphill climb to return)?

Nothing per se, however there was a lack of cutlery which if we had wanted to cook and eat in the house would have been a nuisance.
Also whilst bedrooms were lovely if we had been staying longer than a few days there was no drawer space for unpacking.
Also some pre-existing marks on carpet whilst not an issue meant there was a niggle in case it was thought we made them.

Location

the rooms were not clean and the property and need decorating. It looks like they recently had a leak. we also left a car key behind and they kept it

Would 100% stay again. Absolute bargain.

Das Haus ist sehr gut, um einige Tage in Whitby zu verbringen.
Die Ausstattung ist vollständig und der Parkplatz ist direkt vor dem Haus.
Kurzum: wer nach Whitby möchte, sollte hier übernachten!

close to town 10 minute steady walk, less than 5 minute walk for pub. every room was spotless.
lovely open plan kitchen, lounge ideal for a group stay.

I don't like putting anything negative about this place, but at a push an extra tea towel would have been ideal, very hard to find any faults.

Comfortable and clean bedrooms, well equipped kitchen, clean beautiful bathrooms. We enjoyed our stay.

The parking was a tight squeeze for bigger vehicles like mine. There was a foul smell coming from somewhere in the living room/kitchen area. Couldn’t figure out where from. Other than that, all good

Location, comfy beds, showers, coffee machine.

Couldn't get hob to work the first night, downstairs area and stairs in desperate need of redecoration, small yard full of weeds and nettles - some at least 5ft high, stains on lounge carpet, filthy light fittings in lounge and had to live out of bags as no drawers in bedrooms.

Location fantastic, brilliant showers, comfy beds,

In a big need of repairs and maintenance, leak over kitchen roof, not redecorated, hob didn’t work, stains on carpets, general condition of stairs and walls need attention, light fittings dirty, dishwasher didn’t work properly

really large, 4 beds with 3 en-suites and one bathroom. nice large living area too and great location.

shortage of glasses and mugs

Great location, great house, great host

Modern, clean accommodation, 10 minutes walk from town centre. Each bedroom has its own bathroom so good place to stay for group of friends. Large dining room table for breakfast.

There is little storage or hanging space in the bedrooms. Could do with a refresh of paint here and there. Only one parking space so other cars need to be parked in pay car park 5 minutes walk away at cost of £9 per day.

The house was lovely and in an ideal location. The en-suite bedrooms made us feel as though we were in a hotel. The beds were really comfortable and the house warm and cosy.

Car parking was limited for a two car family. Only one parking space but car parks nearby were recommended by the host. The house(s) in the complex were new and space was utilised for accommodation so very little space for parking. It got really busy as tenants were dropping off at the same time.

Unfortunately we feel we paid over the odds as it clearly needs a deep clean and some general maintenance doing. The photos are obviously from when it was brand new and it’s had a lot of hammering over the years and just not been kept on top of. It would be lovely once it’s had a deep clean and the general maintenance such as repainting of the walls, filling off the cracks and remedying of the leak from the kitchen roof lights. The location is great and all the facilities are there. But unfortunately what ruined our stay was that it clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly when we arrived.

enjoyed the stay at Hogarth's everything was as per details
The house was perfect for a mixed group of ages from adult to infants
very private and quiet apart from the seagulls in the morning ;-)
perfect location for all within walking distance to main Harbour and all other main points of interest. Albeit the house accommodates up to eight people only one car park space but a public car park within a ten minute walk and is reasonable price for 24 hour parking would certainly recommend this Airbnb and very responsive hosts for all queries

Lovely place to stay, but if a damp problem in the kitchen but didn’t spoil our stay. Only gripe I had was quite a lot of messages with regards to fines for this, that and the other, I never quite felt left alone to enjoy my weekend.

Location , kitchen facilities, towels and bedding good , comfy beds .

Needed a light bulb at the top of the stairs , a bit dangerous and had to leave a bedroom door ajar for light , Showers in both bathrooms a bit awkard to use .Had problems with the TV channels. Bedroom on 3rd floor bit awkard it has no storage for clothes or space for suitcases . Last morning spotted a small rat in the outdoor space .

Beautiful property in a good location.
Just a few niggles that wouldn’t ruin a stay by any means and easily fixed:
An information book would be useful, some leaflets etc. A sweeping brush. New lick of paint.
Like I say I’m sure by the main holidays these things will of been sorted and then it will be a 5*.

I did think there would have been a welcome pack there was a coffee machine no pods and maybe some milk would have been nice

very nice and cosy place

not cleaned, toilet so dirty with marks, beds with hair and beds not made, we can see was used by previous, towels on the floor with hairs and bins full on toilets. Glad I always bring extra towels and sheets to use as I always say we might need one.

Light and airey house, lovely and warm and clean and cosy.

Loose toilet seat but that's all.

The property was immaculately presented. The bedrooms were very spacious and most importantly the beds were excellent. The 3 night break was excellent value for money.

There is the odd mark here and there but that’s to be expected in a rental property. The outside area is a great bonus but is in need of weeding.

The location of the house was excellent. It was bright and spacious and an excellent place to spend some time with friends and family. We would definitely use it again if we were wanting to stay in that area.

The property was spacious and great that 3 rooms were en suite. The main kitchen and living area were large enough for our party of 7 (plus one dog!) - the kitchen was well equipped

Finding the cutlery drawer! as we hadn’t seen the note in the welcome book to look for it, we had gone out and bought a set! An additional parking permit would be helpful too.

Great house
Perfect location

Lovely weekend had by 4 50 plus ladies. Check in very easy, parking for 1 car and so close to the centre. Really enjoyed the Fleece pub en route ?

great downstairs area, comfy beds, great water pressure ?and near to town??

no wardrobes or drawer space in the bedrooms. only one bedside lamp in all of the bedrooms. lack of parking onsite and parking spaces in the area as a whole. no toiletries in the bathroom. ??

Lovely house, comfortable beds. Great location, easy walk to town and the Abbey

fantastic location & the beds were really
comfy.

My expectations were high given the rating & the price but I was disappointed. There were black marks on the bedding, mould on the table mats & the place could
really do with a deep clean. The seating areas are very small, 2 of the showers had parts falling off them & the bath in the top room
seemed to be moving. parking was a pain, as each property on the site has 1 space but other residents try fitting as many cars in as they can making it difficult to get in & out. Has obviously been used a lot and is now in desperate need of some TLC.

The location was convenient. The downstairs living/ kitchen area provided an excellent social area for our group. The staff responded quickly to our early issues and were very pleasant.

As in previous reviews, the lack of storage in all bedrooms was poor. Bedside cabinets with drawers could have helped. Also, the property could do with a refresh, particularly up the stairs.

Very pleased with the property. It had everything you needed plus some nice extra touches (shower gel/shampoo, milk in the fridge). The location is fantastic. I would recommend it for small children and pets as there aren't lots ornaments or anything that can be broken. Each bedroom having its own bathroom makes it a great place for family get-togethers.

Great location.

Small garden space.

Excellent spot, easy walking (level) into town. Well equipped, modern house, everything we needed.
Close to town, less than 10 minutes on foot. Found second parking space free on street nearby but also plenty of car parks around.
Two favourite finds - The Fleece, old style pub, lovely staff and little terrace overlooking the river and the Korean takeaway on Grape Lane.

This property has everything you would want for a visit to Whitby with four very comfortable bedrooms (all with a bathroom), a well equipped and spacious living room and kitchen, an allocated parking space and an easy walk to the town centre. There’s a large Sainsbury’s supermarket and petrol station a few minutes away by car. Apart from that, everything is in easy walking distance. I would highly recommend this property.

The house was in perfect location, not too far from the centre so nice and quiet.
Spacious for 7 people & 1 dog. Well equipped kitchen. Beds were comfortable & very clean.

Only a couple of things really. Missing a bread knife. Could do with a lick of paint in some rooms. The taps are very unstable in the top floor room with the free standing bath.

beautiful house, location perfect, parking a bonus.. lovely property. Will definitely stay here again.

struggling for negative points tbh! a lick of paint in places possibly.

Thanks for a lovely stay. This is our second time here and think that the location is ideal for Whitby and the surrounding area. Great views out the back bedrooms. The beds are very comfortable and it’s great to have your own bathrooms.

Newly built property ideal for a group of friends or extended family visit. Well equipped, modern kitchen and nice open-plan living area. Beds are huge and comfortable, each bedroom has their own bathroom. The whole place was very clean. Good location just 10 minutes walk to the swing bridge in town centre. Great that we could bring our dog along.

Large stains on the lounge area carpet are very noticeable and should be cleaned or carpet replaced. Not a good first impression! There are no drawers or wardrobes in bedrooms. Big bath looks nice but had no plug and the lack of a shower screen makes hard to avoid getting a wet floor. Outside space is limited. Only one parking space (we had 3 cars and found parking up the steep side road, about half a mile away). Not really enough seating for 8 adults in the lounge area, better for up to 6 max. Could have done with extra tea towels and a hand towel in the kitchen.

Breakfast not applicable. Great Location.

Would have preferred a shower to the free standing bath in one bedroom

It is a lovely property, very well maintained and presented which met all the needs of three couples who stayed there for three nights. We would have no hesitation in recommending it for a visit to Whitby.

great location, grateful for the parking spot!

upon entering it stunk! smelt like dogs and was stuffy. needed a good airing and a clean!

couldn’t believe there were breadcrumbs on the floor in the kitchen, on the table and in the cutlery drawer! cutlery was dirty, lipstick marks around one of the glasses and one of the cups, cooked in cheese on the edge of one of the pots.
we had to start our vacation, which was to celebrate my dads 70th birthday, by cleaning the whole house! was appalled by the colour of the water after mopping the kitchen and hall way floor - it was worse than the colour of pond water!
stains on the carpet in the lounge and the cushions smelt of dog!

The accommodation was lovely, spacious and clean. It is situated close to everything that you would want to see in Whitby. Guide was easy to follow and all instructions given were clear and also easy to follow.

The only downside was the parking as you could only have one car but the accommodation can have 8 people stay. That said wasn't too far for 24hr parking.

Excellent location, good value

Not enough space for clothes

Thank you for a lovely weekend away. House was lovely, had all facilities we needed. Great location, just a nice distance from the local amenities and sights. Beautiful town and views

clean, tidy and excellent location

nothing it was lovely

the location of Hoggarths Retreat was superb! It was very clean and was perfect for our group/family of 6 Adults

the only thing which was uncomfortable for our group was no clothes rail in 2 rooms and bedside tables with draws would have been easier, as some of us had to live out of a suitcase

comfortable and spacious layout in a convenient location

limited parking

Great location and fantastic house. I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Whitby.

Location

Need more towels, glasses, walls need repainting

Location

Few little issues

Lesley H.

Excellent property, great location and ideal for our needs.
As seems to be the usual case there are insufficient comfy seats for the number of guests the property can accommodate. Fortunately there were only 6 of us and we struggled to fit comfortably on the sofa. Not sure where the other 2 guests could have sat.
We had to ask for wine glasses and saucepans, which was a little disappointing as this should gave been checked before our arrival. They were provided very promptly the following day.

Lovely house in a great location.

Great location! We would definitely stay again

great location and a really lovely property!
furnished nicely and ideal for our family break. the en-suites were just so useful.
clean and well equipped it showed no sign of being used extensively by other visitors.
also useful was the abbey car park up the hill for the other cars in our family party.

car park was slightly tight for my Land Rover but not a huge issue.

The location was very good. 5min walk to centre. Lovely Fish and Chip shop just down the road.

It could have been a lot cleaner.
Maybe Housekeeping need to be spot checked.
Fridge not cleaned. Dried milk on shelf.
Freezer to frozen to use.
Hoover needed cleaning. Smell wasn't good.
All carpets needed a good hoover. Downstairs carpet needed a clean.
Shower on 1st floor the pipe was split so unusable.
All the lamps needed dusting.

The space and standard of furnishings were excellent. We travelled with 2 other couples. The open plan living and kitchen area were ideal. The bedroom and bathrooms all spacious , clean and modern. We would all recommend the property.

There wasn't anything we didn't like about the property or location.

Fantastic location just a short walk into Whitby. Quiet area and the house was perfect for our stay

Excellent location with all shops pubs and restaurants all within a short walk. Easy to access the costal paths. House was nice but a little under equipped - it needs more cutlery and utensils. The baking trays were all dirty. More cups needed when there’s 8 people. Fairly clean throughout so just a little short of being a fantastic property. Parking was a slight issue when the town is busy as only one allocated space at the property.

Fantastic location, very clean, comfortable, plenty of space for 8 of us. Great bathrooms. Small outdoor seating area with nice garden furniture.

The ladies in the group would have appreciated more clothes hanging spaces, not really anywhere to hang our ‘going out’ clothes in the bedrooms except in the main bedroom on the top floor.

Clean other than stated. Good location. Kitchen well equipped with a big dining area.

Stains on carpets. Dirty pillowcase. No hanging storage for clothes in some rooms. Not enough seating for 8 adults and no coffee table.

There wasn't much to dislike! House is very good, beds very comfortable, bathroom facilities great!
Great position, just a short walk into the town. We've had a lovely stay!

Really lovely place to stay, close to the Abbey, with a great kitchen and lounge area. We loved it.

Great location close to Whitby. Very nice place and good hosts. Thank-you

Our stay at Hoggarth's Retreat was exactly as described in the listing - the house is modern, clean and well equipped with lots of facilities/utensils, and in a great location. The hosts were very accommodating, and were able to provide additional items - high chairs and travel cots - on request. They were easy to contact both before arriving and when we had a question on arrival.

Lovely modern and clean house. 10 minutes walk to Whitby.

nicki l.

Had a great week here
First holiday in ages due to the pandemic
Nice walk to Whitby town and lots of good takeaways that deliver
Great en-suite showers in every room

A lovely place to stay and the short walk to the Hub of Whitby is along the river/ harbour making it very pleasant.

Beautiful house in immaculate condition, would happily stay there again.

Lovely trip in a fantastic cottage. Local to the centre of Whitby and all the wonderful restaurants, bars and shops it has to offer.

Would highly recommend for anyone visiting Whitby.

Amazing location and beautiful home. Really nice interior and lots of space. We loved our stay at Hoggarths Retreat and would definitely return.
It was very clean with lots of nice touches like coffee pods, tea bags and dishwasher tabs etc.

We loved our stay at Hogarths retreat. The location is great. Only a 10 minute walk into Whitby. Super clean and the house had everything we needed. Would definitely recommend.

Donna Merrill

Good points; House spotlessly clean. Beds are lovely and comfy, bathrooms are beautiful and well equipped. House is in a great location, few minutes walk to centre of Whitby. Great pubs/restaurants in Whitby, The Starr Inn Harbour, Abbey Wharf and Horse and Griffin, ate in them all lovely, nice cafe / bistro think it was called Sanders Yard ate there twice and it was lovely/ Bad points, No frying pan ( couldnt do fried eggs ) only 2 other pans. Living area would be a bit small if there were 8 people in the house, there were only 4 of us so it was fine.

Would highly recommend a stay here, fabulous house in a great location. Communication has been excellent throughout. We look forward to returning for another stay.

We stayed here for a couple of nights and wished we had booked for longer. The location is perfect, just a short stroll alongside the Marina and you're onto the swing bridge and in the heart of Whitby. The accomodation was everything we could have wished for, lots of space, clean, modern and well designed.

Excellent. Stylish house with lots of space and very centrally located to Whitby’s main town. Each room was superbly designed and had its own bathroom making it feel very private in a group house.
Really enjoyed our stay! Thank you

Fantastic location, beautifully spotless and all the mod cons. Would strongly recommend Hoggarts to anyone looking for high quality accommodation in Whitby!

We were amazed at the quality and cleanliness of this 3 storey, pet friendly house. The bathrooms were superb and the beds were large and very comfy. It is situated a 10 minute flat walk out of the main tourist area, which is difficult thing to find in Whitby. Happy to recommend this fledgling (we assume) accommodation but do have some constructive comments to share: 1) No need for the cloak and dagger parking instructions about having to call on arrival. Just tell us to park in the space outside of the house window. After a long journey, the last thing people want is to stress about whether they need to find and pay for public parking. 2) Dress up the back yard a bit. Nobody will sit out there in its current state. 3) Put a frying pan in the kitchen. 4) Charging a £75 cleaning fee, then asking people to clean down worktops and remove and bag all bedding and rubbish, prior to checkout Is not acceptable. We wouldn’t dream of leaving the house in a poor state but doing the cleaner’s job and paying for the privilege doesn’t sit right. None of these requests were in the booking terms and conditions. We don’t want to put a bad slight on the house, as we think it’s a lovely place to stay but it has a few managerial issues that could easily be solved.

Good location and property with a few snags such as limited or no storage in the bedrooms.

excellent house and location for central Whitby

Excellent location and a lovely house

Communication from the outset was outstanding. Really pleased with the location and presentation of the property. We had a cracking time in Whitby as a result.

all ears

4 couples stayed here for 3 nights. Beautiful, large, clean house with everything you need. Short walk in to whitby. Would recommend and stay here again.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely rebook

The house was absolutely perfect for our new year's break. It was a short walk into Whitby town centre along the marina, which was really nice at the beginning and end of the day. The rooms were well sized and very well decorated and the house was very clean and really well equipped. It was great to find somewhere so nice that would let us take our dogs. The hosts were great and responded to all messages really promptly. Would definitely stay there again.

Home Truths

Hoggarths Retreat is located on a new development which can be tricky to find. We will send over a Google Pin of the exact location prior to arrival - we recommend referring to this to help you find the property.

If you are travelling with more than one vehicle, you will need to park in a pay and display carpark or nearby free parking. Full details would be provided prior to arrival.

The property has three floors so you will need to climb stairs during your visit.
