Neighborhood

Head to Egton Bridge, Arncliffe Woods or the river where you can head over small stepping stones to the wooded island. If you’re looking to eat out or enjoy a quiet drink, there are two public houses in Egton - the Wheatsheaf and the Horseshoe.

Egton is located just six miles from the seaside town of Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast. Popular for its Blue Flag West Cliff beach and promenade, the whole family can enjoy a day on the golden sands. Head to Pier Road, you’ll find fun arcades and plenty of fish restaurants where you can sample the catch of the day.

The other side of Whitby is full of narrow, medieval streets dotted with boutiques and pubs. Climb the famous 199 steps up to the Church of Saint Mary. You can also discover the renowned ruined Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s gothic novel ‘Dracula’.

Getting Around
Egton has great rail and bus links to Whitby. Northern Rail operates a train to Whitby five times per day which is a short 22 minute journey. Whitby train station is in the centre of Whitby so villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast can easily be reached via rail from here too.

Alternatively, you can hop on the Arriva North East bus service from Egton which travels three times a day.

By car the journey from Egton to Whitby takes approximately 12 minutes along the A171.

The premises itself was fantastic with great quality furnishings and fixtures. The place is beautiful anmd cozy. Unfortunately the cleaners let the place down and one of the worst we have seen.
There were poo stains down the front of the toilet in the master in a few spots.
The cleanliness of the kitchen and cutlery was disgusting. There were several cups with mould inside from hot chocolate, it was as if someone had tipped the drink out and then put the cup in the cupboard upside down. The cutlery draw had stains inside with body hairs.
There were food splash marks on the wall, stained wine glasses in the cupboard and dirty knife’s in the knife block.
They did offer to send someone out to clean the place up that had already supposedly been cleaned but we declined as we wanted to be left in private during the stay. This should have been done already.

Our stay at Shunner Howe lodge was amazing. The property was simply stunning throughout. Incredibly spacious everywhere, with the exception of the kitchen, if it was me/us - we would have made it open plan in to the lounge/dining area. Copious amounts of storage space. Located in the gorgeous North Yorkshire Moors, its location was great for commuting to Whitby and other places close by.
We could quite easily live in the property, but hope to be back for a short stay in the future!

The showers in the upstairs and downstairs ensuites both flooded on the first morning. The problem was identified and fixed within a few hours, but should never have happened.
The washing machine was not operational and about to be replaced. Being able to wash clothes is a top priority for us on an extended holiday in England, and the managers of the property came up with a creative solution which was much appreciated.

Great house and location, loved the woodland walk just outside the door. Saw deer, hare and hedgehogs just outside the window. Only issue was there were no tea towels or oven mitt, which made using the kitchen tricky. Felt like I wasn’t believed by host so never had any supplied.

Such a big space! Beautifully decorated with everything we needed in the lodge for our 5-day break. Comfortable beds and great showers. Loved the underfloor heating!
Lady Cross caravan park is located perfectly with a short drive to lots of pubs and walking routes. The caravan park has a little woodland walk around it which was nice. A very tidy park with friendly reception staff.
Nothing we didn’t like!

AVOID THIS PLACE We have stayed here twice, the first time in April 2021 and it was lovely. No issues reported and it made us book again at the end of August 21. The 2nd time around however wasn’t very good at all! We booked via Hotel Stay & North Yorkshire and both them and the owners were appalling when it came to complaints! On Day 1, there was an awful smell in the kitchen, it was the smell of a dead rat that was decomposing. We complained and they sent someone out (Had no idea it was the owner that came) anyway they put some bleach down the sink and came back with some air fresheners and said if the problem still happens let us know, we left it for that day closed the kitchen door, but very soon after, the smell took hold of the whole of the downstairs again.. living room, eating area, kids bedrooms. It was truly inhabitable. I don’t know if you’ve ever smelt rotting flesh, but you don’t want to be around it at all, which meant that the lovely log cabin we had rented was truly wasted, as we couldn’t spend any time in it. We couldn’t stop thinking about other rats potentially being in the property either, and the hygiene aspect of it all. They admitted on the day they came that they thought it was a dead rodent in the kitchen behind the boards and mentioned to contact them if the smell persists. We sent an email to the booking company the next day and also over the course of 3 days and didn’t hear anything back at all. In this time we had to buy a plug in for the kitchen to mask the smell. That still didn’t work, I can’t explain how bad the smell was. There were 2 adults and 2 children and a dog on this holiday and we were unable to use the kitchen properly to cook any meals. Over the course of the week you can imagine how costly it became having to eat out for lunch and dinner every day. We were easily spending another £100+ per day as there were 4 of us, something we just hadn’t budgeted for, as the last time we came meant we had planned to eat in the house on some nights and prepare lunches to take out in the day. It was just not possible to even think about doing this with the overpowering smell of rotting flesh everywhere in the downstairs of the property. The owners buried their head in the sand with the problem, refused to acknowledge it still existed whilst we were there. Responded more after we left, offered nothing in compensation for their problem. Not even a refund for the cost of a plug in we were forced fo buy!! Our holiday was ruined and the owners are only interested in taking your money. They are ignorant to complaints, they have some learning to do in order to offer a full customer experience as it was a poor show by them, very arrogant and ignorant behaviour. I offered a phone call conversation to resolve the problem once I learned it was the owners on site (after our stay) and they refused that and just offered nothing. I would avoid this place if you’re thinking about booking it!

Great location and fantastic property, located on a quiet campsite. The lodge and site is secure and safe for kids, while serving as an ideal base for exploring the some of the best that North Yorkshire has to offer. One of the few properties we’d return to as a week wasn’t enough to fully explore the area with young children.

Hassled by several e mails from Hosting companies. You do not know who is in charge of your booking. Asked to provide my ID twice and concerned as working away if not able to provide then I would lose the booking. Stressful experience, won’t repeat.

Apsalutly amazing Location! A short drive to Whitby and other local interesting and historical towns. Lovely walk around the main site and all very secluded, isolated and so quiet. A little nao when you arrive too so your sure not to get lost. A very much thoughfull food hamper left my the lovely owners on are arrival with some lovely Whitby made edibles. Everything was immaculate and clean. Cleaning fee is £75 which is fine although they will ask you to clean up the day before in the state you found it plus you need to empty all their bins and take it with you preferably ( I mean we are a family of 5 and clean up anyways but the owners felt that we needed up-most reminders emailed and hotted here, there and everywer).
The lodge was amazing! The interior has been done tona modern, warm and hearty standard but never feels old. This really is a beautiful location and I would say again. Hopefully they add the cleaning fee into the hotel overall price, I don'treally want to know that I am paying someone £75 to clean and then be emailed bybbaff the day after arrive and the day before we leave that I need to clean the place, empty bins, sanitize here their and everywhere. For that price you could of give me the £75 and I would of cleaned inside and stayed another night

The lodge is in a lovely secluded part of the camping park and surrounded by trees. We spent evenings relaxing in the lovely cosy living area with the fire on. The kitchen facilities are excellent and allowed us to cook dinner in the evenings as we couldn’t go out due to covid.
It’s only a 10 minute drive into the centre of Whitby and a great base for exploring the coastline North and South.

A great location for easy driving to supermarkets and a few seaside towns. The house is huge and gorgeous, and has thoughtful touches of kitchen equipment, children’s books etc. that are very helpful and often not included with holiday rentals.
