Trip Details

The Space
Head to the fully equipped kitchen and you’ll find a modern, clean space. The property also benefits from an open plan living and dining area where you can enjoy meals and relax with your loved ones.

The house boasts three spacious bedrooms. The master features a king size bed and ensuite bathroom. Ideal for family stays, the second bedroom is a double and the third is a twin.

Potters Bank has a further two bathrooms. The family bathroom is complete with a bath and overhead shower, and the second features a walk in shower.

Neighborhood
Potters Bank is located in the popular city of Durham in the North East. Named ‘One of the Best Cities in the World to Visit in 2020’ by The Independent and voted ‘The Best City in the UK’ by Condé Nast’s traveller magazine readers, the beautiful city is packed with history and charm.

It has the perfect blend of medieval heritage and a modern, vibrant feel. The cobbled streets are peppered with restaurants, bars, pubs and shops. Take a leisurely stroll near the River Wear which continues on past Durham Cathedral and the 900 year old Durham Castle.

Durham Cathedral is an outstanding building originally constructed between 1093 and 1133. The Norman architecture is especially important as it is now the oldest surviving building with a stone vaulted ceiling of such a large scale. You can climb the Tower’s 325 steps for incredible views of the city and countryside. If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, head to the Chapter House where they filmed one of the Hogwarts classrooms.

Getting Around
The centre of Durham is a short ten-minute walk from Potters Bank.

Durham train station is 20-minutes away on foot so nearby towns and cities can easily be reached via rail. There’s also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station.

There are plenty of bus routes throughout Durham. Hop on the Arriva 6 route to visit Barnard Castle or the number 22 which travels through Seaham and Sunderland.

Lovely city and we enjoyed everything

Great location & very pretty and comfy! We really enjoyed our stay!

We thought the property was great; just a few suggestions: 1) wifi instructions were not correct at the site, but we did easily find the router so we’re able to figure it out. 2) the shower is a bit tricky - would be good to include instructions on how to operate it - my senior folks really struggled 3) the instructions for recycling were a little bit confusing: May need to be updated. 4) last one and bit silly, but might prove really useful: would be nice to have a mirror over the utility sink downstairs- all little things. Was a really lovely house and we would stay there again!

Limpieza

Nicely decorated and appointed house. Three bathrooms. Within walking distance of city centre via wooded pathway and quiet streets

Oven not working and agents took 24 hours to contact the owner. Not good enough.

Location was good, and you could park directly in front of the house itself. The lounge dining area is of a good size, and the kitchen was also good.

The bathrooms were very small and the position of the bathroom cabinets meant that it was very difficult to use the sinks. The shower in the en suite was also very small, the family bathroom was much better.

Is spacious and you can park your rented car in front of the house. The kitchen is well equipped.

During my stay, the temperature of Durham is between 8 degrees to 13 degrees celsius. The heater of the water tank is not turned on, the heater of the rooms is also not turned on. I've to call them and luckily, the host, Charlie and the team are very responsive to resolve the matters. Pls provide more shampoo and shower gels and toilet paper too.

Our stay at Potters Bank was great. The Airbnb was exactly as advertised with really easy access/check in, very clean, spacious, and walkable to the downtown core. The host was responsive and provided clear instructions prior to check in. Overall great stay and would stay again if visiting Durham!

We enjoyed a 3 night stay at this property. We chose it for the walk through the woods to get to Durham centre and were not disappointed. A very clean and comfortable house once we'd turned the heating down on arrival. Quiet and convenient location. We messaged the maintenance company privately about a couple on minor maintenance issues with door handles and a few non-essential utensils that would benefit the kitchen. Yes we would certainly recommend staying here.

A good property in a good location. But beware their additional security deposit requirements!
They do list the additional fee under their "House Rules" but it still stung and caught us by surprise as they force you to use their deposit service, which is either £25 non-refundable or £250 with £10 of that amount as a non-refundable admin fee. Both feel very cheeky and had I spotted the fee under House Rules to begin with I would have avoided the property on principle.

Great place to stay! Only thing to note is the downstairs bedroom was freezing and upstairs was roasting, apart from that was great!

It was a great stay with Stay here. The owner was really nice and responsible. The kitchen is fully equipped and spacious for a four-person family. Will definitely come back if I come to Durham again!

Good location, spacious. Beds were very comfortable. Everyone slept great apart from the person in the downstairs bedroom.

Dining table was not clean and sticky when we arrived. Downstairs bedroom kept lighting up every hour in the night waking me up with what I can only assume is a security light in the corner.
Even after multiple attempts, none of us could connect to wifi throughout the stay and the 4G connection was very poor

Modern ausgestattes Haus mit allem was man braucht.

Modern, clean, comfortable, good location and a lovely quiet area. Very nicely decorated and well stocked. The beds were so comfortable. Would definitely recommend to others. It was handy to pick up the keys from the safe box and not feel like we were holding someone to a certain time to meet us.

The temperature regulation on the shower in the main bedroom ensuite is broken, so we were unable to use it as the water was too hot. The other two showers were great though.

Spacious, clean and modern townhouse, with good facilities, very near to Ustinov College. The woodland walk from the house into the city centre is beautiful but takes about 30 minutes and is very steep. A torch is essential at night.

Clean and very quiet. Close to town via car or walking paths. Parking at Prince Bishops Car Park is reasonable and very close to downtown. I would rent it again if in the area.
Our favorite restaurant in Durham was Riverview Kitchen for breakfast or lunch.
Grocery and restaurant deliveries are available here via Uber Eats and similar services.

The online guest instructions said "thermostat on wall." We think the regular thermostat shown in the Booking.com living/dining room picture above the wall phone was replaced by a non-descript wireless device but had no remote control. We hunted for three days and found an un-labelled device in the laundry room that turned on the heat. There was still no way to set the temperature. So we turned on the heat, it got hot, then we turned it off to keep the temperature reasonable. On the other hand, the separate hot water was scalding hot, so be careful.
The online instructions for the garbage pickup schedule were useless. We eventually searched the internet to find out the pickup day from the town website.
Nearly all furniture, dining items and even the kitchen cabinets are sourced from Ikea. Fortunately we found an Allen wrench in a kitchen drawer as we needed to tighten some of the loose Ikea bolts in the dining chairs.
The place is new and clean, and its great to have a parking space, but don't expect the character normally associated with a rental home that is used by long term owners. No shelves full of books to read for example.
Host and Stay, the property managers, can be difficult to reach. Unfortunately like many organizations these days, you can't get contact information for a specific person who is local and knows the property details. They operate more like an online call center. By way of example, I wanted more information about the garbage pickup day mentioned earlier. I asked via their customer service email and they cut and pasted the online "guest book" information I already had. Soo annoying!!
I also got three separate email requests from Host and Stay for a damage waiver or security deposit even after I had paid the damage waiver and received a receipt from Superhog, the group Host and Stay uses to collect such fees.

17/02/2023

modern comfortable property in good quiet location (we enjoyed the mile walk into Durham)

the WiFi was poor and there were no instructions for the boiler! I could not locate a thermostat or a timer to ensure efficient usage.
Host & Stay also took payment on arrival when I’d already paid in full, meaning I went overdrawn so had to sort out on first day of holiday - not ideal.

We encountered several problems during our stay including a faulty boiler and/ or thermostat- no heating/ no hot water on arrival and then after reporting this a fix that meant we weren’t able to turn either off. I reported this but no one came out to fix the issue. The noise coming from the boiler (which could be heard outside of the property) paired with a faulty sensor in the downstairs bedroom blaring an intermittent light made this bedroom inhabitable. Also encountered power cuts due to leak and water coming through the ceiling. Fridge stank and facilities not as described. Have reported all of this and been offered- £49 by way of compensation. Insulting. £8pp compensation for all that!? Would not recommend.

The size of the property is very good, with one bedroom, one small bathroom and one laundry room (plus a backyard) on the ground floor. The kitchen (with a small breakfast bar desk), a good-sized living room and dining table are located on the 1st floor. Another twin-bedded bedroom and a bathroom are located on the 2nd floor. On this same 2nd floor, there is one big master suite bedroom with a bathroom. The furniture is modernized and comfortable. However, closets are either absent or in short in the 2 bedrooms, except that the master bedroom has a big closet.
The kitchen is also very well-equipped, with oven, dishwasher, microwave, kettle and coffee making machine. Coffee is good too.

The location is a big headache to those who do not drive. Walking to the city centre is via some rural muddy roads and it takes about 25 minutes. Walking back from city centre after sunset during winter is almost impossible since there is no light at all for some of the muddy roads, and it is upslope most of the time. Taking Uber from city centre costs about GBP9.

This is a great location walkable to all that Durham has to offer. The house is compact, clean and well-equipped. The host was responsive and proactive in communication. There's a great pub just a short walk away and it's an easy walk into the centre of Durham along the river. The area is quiet and peaceful and it was easy to get out into the beautiful County Durham countryside. A perfect spot whether you're traveling on business or on holiday.

Loved the layout. 3 floors, connected by small, easy to ascend, staircases. The kitchen was one of my favorite places on our 4 week trip. I loved how it was a separate room of its own, and one door down from the room that was a cozy living room and fining room. All were spacious and well equipped, beautiful and cozy. Our teen got the first floor to herself. A small bedroom with full bed and desk, plus bath. Laundry room was there too. Kitchen living room and dining on middle floor. Two bedrooms and 2 bath on top. All the beds were so comfortable with great bedding.
Sainsbury local grocery was .7 miles away down a beautiful connection of footpaths. We used uber to get to events at Durham University and to the castle and city center.

This home is located in a convenient spot for visiting Durham and surrounding areas. There are lots of nice footpaths for walks nearby. The ground-floor bedroom is small and may be most suitable for one person. The kitchen was easy to use.

The location was perfect for our requirements, hence the reason for booking it

We had no central heating for the first 26 hours of our stay. The electric fire, in the lounge, didn't work. Rickety furniture. Badly fitted bathroom fittings. No storage facilities in one of the double bedrooms. On the whole, the property was poorly maintained

Mark

Location, safe area

Bathroom taps are plumbed incorrectly

Carol

03/02/2022

Quiet location despite being close to student accommodation. A little bit if a walk to the centre but pleasant and mostly downhill. Would recommend a taxi back home ?

Downstairs (ground floor) was cold compared to rest of the house, so a bit cold in the morning/ evening getting up and ready for bed. Once in bed, it was cosy.

Fridge/freezer a bit small for property of that size. If staying for a week it could be an issue.

Nowhere to store clothes in ground floor bedroom so living out of bag. Again, if only a couple of nights or if only 1 person using the room it's not much of an issue, but a longer stay, or 2 persons sharing the room would be an issue.
