Neighborhood
Westgate is a small village in the heart of the North Pennines. It has a church, St. Andrew's, a village hall, and a pub - The Hare and Hounds - which brews its own beer and serves evening meals.
Slit Wood, an ancient woodland to the north of the village, is a place of peace and relaxation. It follows the Middlehope Burn and provides one of Weardale's favourite walks with a series of attractive waterfalls and over 100 varieties of wild flower during the spring and summer.
The market town of Stanhope can be found six miles away from Westgate. This is a picturesque haven for visitors seeking rest and relaxation amidst beautiful surroundings; the peaceful waters of the River Wear provide an idyllic backdrop for those who enjoy being outdoor and active too, with the ford at Stanhope a popular location where walkers can cross the river using giant stepping-stones.
Don't miss the opportunity to see the famous fossil tree which is approximately 320 million years old, or visit the 12th Century church of St Thomas.
You can also hop on board the Weardale Railway at Stanhope station. This 18-mile heritage railway line takes you on a journey through stunning scenery and connects to nearby market towns including Wolsingham and Bishop Auckland.

Very pleasant and comfortable house. Spotless. Well equipped. <br/>This is a lovely part of the world, great walks, villages, landscapes etc. <br/>It would be 10 out of 10 with better managers.<br/><br/>The management was very poor. <br/>Read the fine print VERY carefully re hidden charges! HostandStay charge £10-25 over what you have already paid to indemnify them against breakages etc. I've never come across anything like that. <br/>Very poor response to emails - minimum 24 hour turn around. Took more than a week to return deposit. <br/>It all made what should have been a lovely weekend very stressfull.

Self contained bungalow in a quiet village; on the main road but not uncomfortably noisy. <br/>Comfortable beds and good quality light reduction blinds. The TV in the second bedroom wasn't working; it couldn't get linked to channels.<br/>Location is good for local walks and hikes as well as getting to the bigger villages and towns.<br/>Host is very responsive and has various ways to get in contact, which was useful when we had some issues. Host responded to issues raised and addressed immediately, which was appreciated.<br/>Adding a few more utensils in the kitchen would be great for those days people want to stay in and prepare their own meals.

We loved our stay at Britton Hall. Having such stunning walks and the river close by made it easy to walk our dog. The Golden Lion pub served up great food. The local co-op was a handy have everything version. The accomodation was as advertised and worked for us perfectly.<br/>Thank you!

Great location in centre of Weardale. Good sized enclosed garden which was great for the dog. Good sized property with convenient private parking.<br/><br/>Poor Wi-Fi. No terrestrial TV. Internal and external doors sticking and very difficult to close. Lack of equipment in kitchen for a weeks self catering - eg no bread knife, cheese grater, mixing or serving bowls, jugs, etc

Bungalow was very clean and had a homely feel. Modern look to the property, plenty of space in the bungalow with private yard. <br/>Host was proactive with communication and most things were very clear. Such as texting on the day of check to reiterate lock box code and address. House rule very reasonable and easy to follow. <br/>The only issue encountered was that hot water was described as “on demand” but it’s actually a hot water tank. Communicating this would have made for a smoother experience. <br/>Not loads to do in the local area but it’s a beautiful place and very peaceful. Lots of great pubs and cafes.

Had a good stay in Westgate for a week . The home was very modern and generally clean and tidy. Being by a road there was some noise, more noticable at weekends with the influx of bikers on the roads. Nights were quiet. Local pub appears to be shut during the week and open at weekends. You're Sat nav may send you ower moor and via a forded river but there is alternative routes. Shops in Stanhope and further afield. Lovely walk through the woods and old mines close by. Telly in second room not working, slight disappointment for my daughter but not end of the world?!

Very nice location with amazing views nearby and really clean and modern place to stay. <br/>Disregard any mention/images of a hot tub. There is a dirty half filled hot tub in the garden on the property and we were informed it would be available for use before arrival. It wasn’t, we asked multiple times for it to be cleaned before we were told there was ‘no hot tub at the property’ which there definitely was as I was stood in front of it. This coupled with the fact that we were told last minute that the payment for our third nights stay had been cancelled and I was on the phone for hours trying to sort it and the replies through air bnb seeming broken and almost ‘AI’ like made the stay a lot worse than it should have been. The place is definitely ‘rent to rent’ stay must not be the true owners.<br/>-1 star for false advertisement of usable hot tub<br/>-1 star for last minute cancellation / AI like awful communication through airbnb<br/>DO NOT BOOK FOR THE HOT TUB

We did have a lovely stay however one of the main reasons we chose this place in the middle of nowhere was because it had a hot tub - thought the kids would love it and would be an activity in itself to enjoy some down time together over Easter. I even sent a message to the hosts the week before arriving checking about the use of the hot tub after reading a previous review and was assured they would make sure it was ready for use. Turns out all their responses, as polite as they are, are automatically generated and not actually written by a human, therefore not actioned either so expectations not met, very dirty and unuseable. Very disappointing, communicated this to them and they have offered a 10% refund on total stay price which they worked out incorrect, still waiting for a response from them after emailing them back twice. Other than that we couldn't fault the place, just such a shame about communication. Last day to write a review today, was hoping for a response before but no

Overall the bungalow was clean and well presented. <br/>There was a problem with the extraction fan and radiator not working in the bathroom. <br/>The internet signal is very weak and drops out a lot so unable to watch TV programs. Managed to work out how to access Netflix etc so able to watch something however loading time was very slow and had to turn off and on to sign in when wanting to change what you wanted to watch.

The place is surrounded by amazing location with walks from doorstep. Easy check in. Clean house. Comfortable beds with hot powerful shower. The kitchen could benefit with basic tools ei grater or more than 1 knife. The internet was really weak. Constantly dropping off, constantly resetting. Unfortunately 2 weeks after the stay, still haven’t received my deposit back.

beautiful and peaceful location, great value, lovely place to stay

Lovely place to stay, very quiet despite being near the road! Spacious inside, everything you needed. The only thing that was disappointing is we booked here because it had a hot tub (at request from my child!) and when we got there the hot tub was half filled and dirty, and we therefore were unable to use it, and as we were a 3 night stay the host was unable to get it cleaned for us - we probably wouldn’t have booked if not for the hot tub as it was further south than we wanted. Very good value for the place though, close to vindolanda which is well worth a visit. Places to eat locally require a short drive but lots of lovely villages nearby. All in all a lovely place to stay away!

The bungalow is well situated with good dog walks from the door. The communication from the agent was excellent and check in was very easy. The bungalow is well appointed and was extremely clean. <br/>The only downside was that the hot tub was unusable.
