Good location

Lots! There was an absolutely awful smell as soon as you opened the entrance door. The steps to the flat were not those shown on the pictures on booking.com - in fact the flat shown on the site wasn’t the flat we were in. On walking into the property the heat and smell were overwhelming. On trying to open the windows in the lounge we found the sash cords were broken and the windows wouldn’t open - so we couldnt get any fresh air in or let the awful smell out. I had to put tons of talcum powder down the steps to try to mask them smell but this didn’t work. I called the office on arrival to request a maintenance visit however no one came through the whole time we were there although promises of a visit were made. It made my husband ill and he spent the first part of the evening sitting on the harbour wall. He thinks the smell was from the maccerator behind the toilet. The steps up to the flat were also awful. I have slight mobility issues climbing steep steps and we have an elderly dog who we had to assist up them every time - she is too heavy to carry - and it traumatised her greatly. The flat itself wasn’t very clean. The lounge carpet was dirty and the rug smelled terrible. The lounge windows were filthy so the view of the harbour was compromised. Kitchen utensils weren’t clean - I had to dishwasher everything before using. None of these issues are new - in looking at old reviews the windows have been broken for 1/2 years. Surely this is also a fire hazard to not have opening windows - if there was a fire in the kitchen/stairwell the only option was to go up to the bedroom level. Also the “garden” with “garden view” is misleading as it’s just a little yard which also smelled dreadful.

this property was in a good location and reasonable value for money.

my bed hadn’t been changed since the last occupancy. Many of the items in the kitchen had been put away dirty. There was a lack of basic equipment. Bin, dustpan and brush. knife and chopping board to name a few.

I didn’t like the unexpected request for a security deposit after I’d already paid for the accommodation. it It didn’t seem reasonable to attempt to charge me more for a returnable security deposit than the actual rent . i am not sure how the company can justify holding onto it for 14 days. it’s no wonder people chose the non returnable tariff.

with a bit more attention to detail the property could be improved significantly.

The cottage wasn’t as easy to find as judging by the pictures we thought it was up the ramp/steps at the side of the shutter door however it was through the gated alley. Once in, the cottage was roomy and comfortable, the beds were very nice and everything was as the pictures. It was in a perfect location overlooking the river and very close to all the amenities including some amazing restaurants and cafes which meant we could park the car up and not use it all weekend. Parking is an issue as it’s on road parking which was full, the car park just down the road was full when we got there but after a short while we managed to get a parking spot in the car park. The hosts were very quick to respond when I messaged them which was reassuring

Do not waste you money on this property. Firstly it was advertised with free onsite parking which isn’t even true. We arrive at the property and we instantly knew something was wrong by the stretch of dog wee as soon as you entered. Upon further inspection the entire property was cover in animal fur and filthy. We tried to ring host and stay and you are just connected to some call centre in America not ‘a family run business in north Yorkshire’ as advertised. They were absolutely no help in resolving the issue! Luckily air bnb realised how bad the property was and have given us a full refund! After such a stressful ordeal I just want to give everyone the heads up to avoid host and stay and this property in Whitby!!

Location was good and very clean. Bed was really comfortable so a good nighs sleep was easy.

Entrance hall light very dim and not great when arriving in the dark. Sky remote didn't work. TV was poor. It was unusual to not have any hand wash or soap in the apartment, not expecting posh cosmetics but a simple bottle of hand wash isn't too much to ask for.

We had a great stay in this apartment; it was clean and tidy and the bedrooms in particular were very comfortable. I really liked the attic bedroom.
The location felt safe and was quiet, especially in the evenings, and it was lovely to have the view of the boats outside the window.
I would recommend that the kettle (had bits of paint/coating flaking off into the water) and the frying pan (scratched non-stick coating) be replaced.
We returned from a trip one day to find the key safe hanging open and the code visible as the wheels hadn't been rescrambled. I notified Host & Stay of this, and they did acknowledge my message very quickly, but it was a little unsettling to have this happen and not find out why.
However, in all other respects, communication with Host & Stay was excellent. I received detailed check-in instructions and a guidebook for the property, and received prompt responses when I communicated with them regarding out check-in time.

We stay here every year because of the central location, it's dog friendly and probably one of the cheapest places to stay in Whitby.

Please invest in black out blinds/curtains the blinds are no use for bedrooms and let's in all the light even at night and wakes you up so early in the morning!

2 rolls of 2 ply toilet rolls for 4 adults will not last 4 days.

The double bedroom door does not close.

There was no washing up liquid or hand soap so we had to buy our own.

The shower screen leaks quite badly all over the floor which makes it slippery.

Warm and clean cottage with great harbour views from the lounge and bedrooms. Great location close to the town but far enough out at night so not disturbed. Spacious cottage, attic room ideal for teenagers as got own space on their own floor.

Lack of glasses and kitchen utensils like others have said in the kitchen. Only 2 glasses for 3 of us for example. I have reported that so hopefully sorted for future guests.

The location overall it was clean could do with a bit of a spruce lick of paint in places but clean the women in the laundret below was nice and helpfull

Getting locked in one night cause the lock on the door was playing up and we was going out for a meal the lock didn't get fixed till the day after we rung the owener he didn't answer text back later told us he was sick so we was stuck in

Chris

Excellent location and well equipped yes the stairs up to the door are steep but it’s worth it when you get up there, after reading others reviews I can say that all of the issues that were mentioned have been resolved and a problem with the boiler was dealt with very quickly and simply so can’t fault the service.

The beds were so hard which made it difficult to sleep. If the mattress was replaced with a softer one then we would return but unfortunately this alone is enough for us not to be returning- that said I’ll keep an eye out on the website for any information regarding a new mattress!

Had a lovely stay and would stay again. things to improve the kitchen needs better equipment not enough glass, pans plates are very small didn’t cook as we ate out but would have struggled to if we wanted to, underwear left over from previous tenants rubbish left under beds bucket of over turned sand in the cupboard cleaning could be better, heating control didn’t work batteries had run out bought some batteries so we could get it working. Mattress protectors would be a plus as one Mattress had what looked like a wee stain, a picture of the gate into the property would be better the picture of the cobbled slope is misleading, had to leave some rubbish and take the rest with us could not find a bin.front door didn’t feel secure could do with the chain fixing as a minimum.
Overall would stay again with improvements location is amazing flat is an amazing size for our family loved the hall and kitchen flooring made cleaning the dog easier as to not dirty the carpet

Nothing, after seeing the unchanged bed we decided not to stay in the property, and phoned Host and Stay with our complaints. Still waiting to hear back from a manager regarding our refund

Cleanliness of the property, cobwebs everywhere, double bed had not been changed since it was last used (curly hairs in the bed - make of that what you will), hairs in the bathroom, microwave not cleaned properly, dried food residue stuck to the inside and roof. Kitchen sink not cleaned properly, crumbs on the chairs in the living room. Cupboard in the living room containing mould. Entrance door looked as though it had been forced open recently as door surround was damaged Dust on the window ledges, windows that didnt open properly and had paint splatters. I dont normally complain, but all this for £370 for two nights is unacceptable.

Quirky location, large sitting room.

Only one bathroom, the stairs from the entry door were steep. There were no complimentary basic food products. ie milk., Tes bags coffee. There is nowhere nearby to buy groceries especially on a Sunday evening. The TV didn't receive terrestrial channels and it was complicated to operate with two remotes.

Do not stay here. I would not want anyone to experience what we did. Dirty place, shabby, plaster on walls, cobwebs everywhere, glass mirror on floor and dangerous and not fixed to a wall. No curtains on the windows, office blinds fitted that do not stop any light coming in, radiator rusty, toilet does not flush correctly. Windows filthy. I could continue. Tried to resolve this with the owner, no chance of discussing. Advised property is liveable! Never ever have I stayed in such an awful and miserable place. Host & Stay time for you to take this property off your books. This is not the first terrible review. Our trip away was ruined. Oh and not really a cottage as above a dry cleaners. I would call it a flat.

04/08/2023

Location

Filthy. Dirty windows. No curtains on any windows, just white office blinds letting too much light in so couldn’t sleep.
Plaster on walls. Wallpaper scuffed all over. Dirty window sills. Cobwebs. Rusty radiator. Toilet doesn’t flush properly. Needs fully decorating.
No maintenance on property. Owner taking profits with no investment in the property. Owner rude when asked for reimbursement.

Comfortable spacious rooms. Comfy beds. The location was great

The 3 days we were there were hot and sunny and both of the living room windows didn't open, making it a bit stuffy. Could do with a few more drinking glasses. One mug had a crack down the length and there were some cobwebs on one of the pictures in the living room. Some plastered areas on the walls could have been painted over and the towel rail in the bathroom had rust on the lower half. It was a great few days stay but a few DIY jobs would have made it perfect.

Anne

28/07/2023

Location, single beds, comfortable mattresses, double bed, not comfortable bedding clean, etc
Pet friendly with no extra charge.

Bit run down inside, haven't been to an apartment that did not have basic essentials such as oven gloves to be able to make use of the oven safely, etc. Dinner plates the size of a side plate.
Living room windows wouldn't open, so the rooms were very warm and stuffy tv was old or faulty when you changed chanel the previous one still showed like a ghost chanel.
Just before arriving you either have to give a 250 refundable damage waiver or pay 25 non refundable

Great location for a great town. Whitby is a darling, picturesque coastal town on the east side of England. So many charming streets chock full of sweets shops, pubs, restaurants, and other shopping opportunities. The walk to the Abbey and "Dracula's mansion" on the hill is spectacular. The apartment is good value for 3 or 4 people. It feels a bit like a party house, not too fancy or spiffy, but does the job. It's not too close to the tourist mobs, so it's private. It's 3 (!) floors, so there's privacy for guests. Great view of boats in the bay. Kitchen and bathroom are fine. My only problems were not having adequate instructions to find the door and key box (you have to go through a metal gate and down a lane) and getting the right wifi and password. But the hosts were responsive. Still, this information should be checked and updated.

The apartment was in a good location. Lock was a little difficult to manage, the key safe was hard to use.

We have stayed in Whitby on numerous occasion previously. There was no Parking even though it was advertised with parking. When calling up about this were told by host and stay that its wasn't their fault and its are own problem (the parking was than taken off the website).
There were no working lighting in stairs leading from front door to apartment door. - We almost fell on more than one occasion as it was very dark.
The fire was broken and appeared not safe to use.
Medicines were left in the drawer in bedside table of the twin room, fortunately we were a party of adults but had we had children with us we may not have checked all the drawers etc before putting children to bed in this room.
No clean dishes. The dishwasher was full of dirty crockery etc. from the last occupants, possibly because there were no dishwasher tablets but the cleaners should have at least washed up by hand and put everything away. No clean tea towels - all in the washing machine soaking wet and stinking.
Mold everywhere. Old moldy sticks of rock in a cupboard in the lounge.
Spare pillows in a cupboard half way up the stairs full of mold, dust and dirt.
A 5 inch round hole in the ceiling above the window on the landing. Water was literally pouring in, down the wall, floor was soaking. It was moldy, the plaster was falling away, it had a hand towel pinned to the wall to hide it and another on the window sill which was saturated and stinking.
When calling host and stay about this issue we were told its not their issue and they hope we enjoy the rest of our stay.
I have been emailing and calling now for the past few months to host and stay and have tried calling the owner of the apartment several times and have just been ignored. Host and stay said they would contact the owner for a response, the owner themselves said they would look into it, this was over 2 months ago and we have still heard nothing. This is absolutely unacceptable and I would not recommend staying in this property.

Overall it was a nice place to stay for a short break.
Great location and very comfortable to stay

Athough, a few things let it down.

Was unable to connect to the WiFi the two days we were there. Tried the reset and tried on and off with no success. Plus, the notice card on the mantel piece displayed a completely different WiFi option.

The front door is very unwelcoming and is in a poor state. Not good first impression.

The windows are filthy, which impacted the view slightly. upper staircase window was leaking, plaster fell off wall and dripped continuously for 2 days, keeping me awake for 2 nights.cobwebs in the front room that I cleaned(I don’t go on holiday to follow the supposed cleaners around).dirty windows in the front room, they’d not been cleaned for months.windows in upper bedroom the glass has blown so needs glass replacing.front door was covered in fluff(you’d think the cleaners would have cleaned it(but no)the kitchen and bathroom taps were loose, radiator in bathroom was minging, not sure if it was wee stains or rust.blinds in upper bedroom were 3inch too short on one side, the window that leaked needs a blind or curtains up.I’m very disappointed with the property as I paid £334 for 3 nights,I think I should have a refund.I took my friend for her 60th birthday to be let down.

Location for this place was 10/10. We managed to get free on street parking both times we moved the car. Great little old property. Teens were on the top floor, seperate bathroom and main bedroom on the 2nd, kitchen and living room on the 1st, entrance on ground floor. So lots of stairs but they weren't too bad. Views of the harbour from the windows. 2 min walk to the shops. 10 to the harbour beach.

Really needs 4+ pasta bowls as the plates weren't OK for dinners and a couple more sauce pans and a chopping board.
It was generally clean and tidy but hopefully this time the cleaners looked up and saw the cob webs that had been there for a while but that is me being super picky.
The laundrette wasn't an issue for us but maybe a bigger board by the door to deflect the fluff would be a good idea.

Could not find the location had to ask locals ut is above a laundrette, you then have to go down a ginnel and then round the back to a dirty door covered in cobwebs when you open the door you have stairs which is not food I am 70 and my friend is 80 so this was not ideal my son and his wife also came, living room was OK cosy enough bur very cold kitchen was filthy and food was left in the fridge and fridge was dirty the oven had foil which has burnt grease left in and cutlery was filthy, I had to call the agent and email photos which rhey apologised, you can see out of the windows due to dirt, bedlinen was clean and beds were comfy but whole flat is freezing, blind are light so sunlight early hours they need black out curtains, location is good WiFi and parking good we could not wait to leave ,lack of sleep and noisy residents they do cater for essential like ironing board, I have never complained but we were so looking forward to comfy stay and was disappointed as clicks went forward we lost out an hour but could not wait to get. Home at tired.

09/11/2022

Location great and very close to Whitby town centre. Close access to pubs and restaurants within short walking distance. Nice views over the harbour (if the windows were a bit cleaner).

This accommodation was let down by many strange, little things. Individually none of the issues were a major problem, but the cumulative effect made this a rather dismal and uninviting place to stay. The list: flat is above a drycleaning/washing facility which regularly makes noise and plays havoc with the water pressure; exhaust from said facility blows directly onto the door accessing the flat which is covered in pink fluff and spiderwebs - you'll also get a blast of dryer exhaust every time you enter/exit; damaged wall at the bottom of the stairway that has been repaired but not repainted; windows in the living do not open (I would not want to stay here in the summer!); general cleanliness of dishes and kitchen very poor; dust everywhere; and the craziest thing - some strange woman entered the flat unannounced from the drycleaners and said she had to come into the living room and put a card into the gas meter!!! Final nail in the coffin is a demand for a £300 deposit or a £30 waver for damage which I have never come across in hundreds of stays across the country. For the price, there are way better options (we discovered) in Whitby. Massive disappointment and the damage waiver/deposit is an absolute scam.

Good communication and easy to use lock box. Instructions were clear and simple. Great location with nice views. Everything we needed. The ladies in the laundry were excellent with out son who has a learning disability and LOVES washing machines.

The extracts from the laundry blow directly onto you when using the door - makes everything wet and unpleasant. Could do with diverting them away from the entrance.

We got lucky with parking. Not sure if there’s anything more you can do to help but this would remove a bit of stress at the start of the holiday.

The blinds in the bedrooms could do with replacing for blackout blinds.

The unpainted section on the wall coming down to e stairs just makes it look messy - would improve the feel of this were painted.

Upon arrival it took about 20 minutes to find the correct address and door to which is hidden behind an alleyway and wall. The front door is tucked away, absolutely covered in cobwebs and in direct way of the laundry heat output, of which is extremely unnecessary and unpleasant. When opening the door we find a steep set of stairs of which my 75 year old grandma, of whom is in a wheelchair, was shocked to see. This is not photographed and so was a problem for us throughout the holiday. The house itself is spacious, but outdated and in need of a serious look upon. The kitchen was the dirtiest place in the house, with crumbs and dirt everywhere. Oven had not been cleaned and there was food residue all over the bottom. No pans to cook food on in the oven either so absolutely useless. Dirty pots and pans in cupboards as well, which had looked to have not been cleaned in a while. No washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets. One tea towel. A few things left in the cupboard such as a pot noodle, opened sugar and very old vinegar, however no coffee or tea. Huge part of the stairs wall that has been plastered and just left, which is very ugly and such an eye saw. Bedrooms were fine and tidy, however the main bedroom door does not shut properly, of which is extremely annoying, especially when the windows (which were all extremely dirty) are open, as the house catches all the wind, making the doors slam but also drift open. Bathroom could do with a couple of shelves for storage space. The small towels that we were given had black marks all over them (see pictures) which I would’ve thought may be their best part considering we are situated on top of a laundrette. Luckily we had bought our own. I am so unimpressed and for the money we had spent on staying here l do not recommend and will not be staying here again.

Ok, so the property is in a great spot and definitely on the right side of Whitby.

Beware parking is absolutely horrendous nearby so we had to walk 1/2 mile across the bridge to park the car.
When we arrived we fancied a cup of Tea but there was no washing up liquid which we thought was rather odd and the although the dishwasher had been on, there weren't any dishwasher tabs so nothing was properly clean.
We also thought that 2 toilet rolls for 4 adults for 4 days was a bit poor too so we had to buy more (as well as the washing up liquid and soap - none of that either).
That's not 5 stars in my book, not even 4!!

Great views of Whitby harbour from the lounge and bedrooms. Great place to stay if on Whitby short walk into town. Parking is available on the street outside of lucky to get a spot

Dishwasher was full and had not been emptied, chairs missing in bedrooms to do hair a make up.

The location was good, just a few minutes walk to the centre of Whitby, and looking out onto the harbour was nice.

Parking is dreadful, very busy parking spot for visitors so everyone is fighting for somewhere to park. A constant worry every day as to whether we were going to get anywhere to park after a day out. Be warned, just a bit further down the street is a section allowing parking for only 40 mins, but very poorly marked out so lots of people get parking fines daily. The door to the flat and general entrance was awful. The flat is above a laundrette that works long hours, and the exhaust pipes from the driers are fitted in such a way that they blow all the hot sticky air and fabric fluff all over the door, the handle and the steps. It is terrible. Access to the flat is up a steep stairway, not at all an easy access. The tv needs servicing, a very poor picture. Kitchen basic but no oven gloves and only one tea towel, kitchen needs refitting as very tired. Large area on stairs to bedroom had been replastered but just left like that, no repainting. Top bedroom only fits someone less than 5', otherwise you hit your head constantly on the beam across the middle. Left hand window in living room had a broken sash chord so the window won't stay open. Very difficult to find the flat, it is round the back of the laundrette through a strange metal gate and down a passageway into a rather grotty courtyard.

Livingroom and Kitchen were all okay

Finding the door to the property was difficult, maybe a sign to tell you its behind the metal gate would help.
parking was not easy either.
The main bedroom door would not shut.
The blinds on the bedrooms were insufficient and let it too much light at night and early in the morning. Curtains would have been a sensible thing to fit. This was the main cause of not sleeping well.
The bathroom floor was very slippery

Perfect location, the sofa comfy, the bedding comfy harber veiw excellent

The table and chairs very flimsy did not dare sit on them.the windows had not been cleaned for a very long time, the radiator in the bathroom looked horrible
In order to use this property they demanded mypassport or license details,to try and sell me an insurance policy for £35 to protect the owner, bearing in mind they had my bank details and drawn weeks rental, the back door the only door had 2 vents from the laudery dryers that is under the property blowing hot dusty air into the property everytime you opened the door which was not a very welcoming site

Location was perfect. Five minute walk into the centre of town.

The place wasn’t fully functional for the cost. The kitchen was poorly equipped with one terrible pan and a few oval plates. I don’t see how you would cook for four people here.
We were only given one house key so had to lock each other in if someone wanted to be out after someone else had gone to sleep.
There was no hand soap, washing up liquid or hairdryer. There are no curtains- only blinds- so it was very bright in the bedrooms at night and early in the morning. And the tv is very low resolution so imprints old images on the screen.

The location was great for town. The house was clean. Amenities all worked. Very spacious accommodation. Lovely little well kept courtyard outside. Nice views over the harbour.

Steep steps up to the house and about a dozen. Didn't realise, my fault for not reading reviews. Not suitable for elderly or mobility issues, pushchairs or a dog like ours with arthritis that needed carrying up and down. But not owners fault would be fine if me and hubby had come by ourselves. Utilities a little dated but clean.
Oven trays for cooking needed.
A full length mirror would be good.

Spacious property, clean and tidy.

Not enough glasses, plates small, knives and forks are cheap quality. The oven had not been cleaned. There is a huge dent in the wall at the bottom of the stairs and various holes in the wall .

The location was ideal

No mirrors in the property apart from a small bathroom mirror. No hairdryer. The apartment needed a better clean, including the windows.

Great apartment with fantastic views of the harbour within 5 mins walk of the centre of town. Steps to the apartment are quite steep so if you want some training for the 99 steps to the Abbey you're in luck. Beds comfy and so was the couch. Kitchen had everything you could need Inc washer and dishwasher and host provided tablets and washing powder. Will definitely be back

The view and the location were great. The property was nice too once up the steep staircase.

We didn't receive the key code so were stuck outside on arrival. There was no garden for dogs. The steep stairs are awful. The boiler was in fault mode - heating didnt work first night. Lamp in lounge faulty, lamp in bedroom can't be plugged in. Parking outside difficult.

Nice place. Excellent location. Kitchen was nice as we cooked breakfast.

A few niggles but nothing that spoiled the trip:

Ended up having to pay for parking 10mins walk away as it was a busy week.
Loo roll ran out so we had to buy some from the supermarket.
The main couch is not that comfy.
Could do with updating TV or simply adding a Chromecast so you can stream Netflix. Wanted to watch a movie on one of the evenings but couldn't do that.

Clean accommodation, central location with harbour views.

Comfortable, warm bed.

Able to take our dog.

Intrusive and hostile booking procedure: AFTER making the non-refundable booking, I was bombarded with emails insisting I sign up with something called 'Superhog' which is landlord insurance.

I was forced to photograph my driving licence and send a selfie, for the landlord's protection.

It also wanted me to pay extra 'insurance' to protect the landlord if I damaged something. I declined this. Had I known I would be made to give my personal details and photo (who knows what it might be used for?), I would never have booked in the first place. But since I had booked and it was non-refundable, I was obliged to do so.

Beware.

Launderette below having the radio on loud in the evenings until about 9.30pm.

Dirty windows and scaffolding obscuring the harbour view.

Parking very hit and miss. On last night had to park across town which was a bit of a pain.

Suggest replacing white 'office' blinds for either blackout blinds or proper curtains to keep out light at night, as it was bright in the bedroom all night. Not good. Would also suit the property's age and look a lot better.

Suggest adding plug socket extender to bedroom to allow left bedside light to be functional instead of just decorative!

The central location of the Cottage and views over the harbour. Parking charges - being able to pay for the day and use the tickets in other car parks so not having to double pay for parking.

The Cottage could have done with a bit more of a thorough clean. The light switches were quite dirty and there were quite a few cobwebs in the rooms. Some of the kitchen utensils were quite grubby as well.

We had glorious weather during our stay and the cottage was very warm (possibly also due to the fact that it was over a laundrette). However, it was difficult for us to have the windows open on an night to let air in due to the noise of the traffic going by outside pretty much 24 hours.

The steep stairs up to the cottage were also a bit challenging for us as we have two small dogs who needed carrying up and down the stairs because they were unable to get up/down by themselves.

Well furnished living area including the bedrooms. Kitchen very well equipped and clean.

Main bedroom decor left a lot to be desired with paper peeling off the wall. Very steep staircase to upstairs main bedroom had no handrail. Entry to the building was also very narrow with steep staircase so really not suitable for even moderatly older guests. Our view of the nearby harbour area could have be so much better if we could see through the dirt on the windows.

Location was excellent, very close to shops and restaurants. The cottage was comfortable and cosy with comfortable beds and nice decor.

We arrived at 4pm and it was clear the cottage hadn’t been cleaned. The previous people that had stayed had left food and wine on the kitchen counter and all three beds had been used, slept-in bedding still on the beds and used dirty towels in the bath.

Simon the owner was so helpful getting this sorted, he offered for the cottage to be cleaned but we needed to get showered and ready for our dinner reservations so he brought us clean bedding and towels and waived the cleaning fee. Simon was really helpful and said if there was anything we needed to give him a call.

Despite the problem at the start we did have a lovely stay in this comfortable little cottage.
