Dolphin Cottage 1736 is a tastefully renovated, former Jet Worker’s residence in the heart of Whitby. With its charming cottage character and seaside themed interiors, this two bedroom holiday home is perfect for a family getaway or a couples retreat.
The Space
Upon entering Dolphin Cottage 1736 you walk directly into the open plan living, dining and kitchen space. This bright and spacious area is a mix of traditional cottage design with a modern twist.
The L-shaped kitchen comes fully equipped with everything you could need for a short break from home. The dining area consists of a four seater dining table with matching benches.
Continuing into the living area, there are two matching grey upholstered sofas, perfect for a cosy evening in front of the television or for getting lost in your latest read with a hot cuppa.
The stairway runs from the back of the cottage, up to the first floor where you will find a double bedroom and family bathroom. The bedroom features a soft, pale green and natural colour palette. With a wooden frame bed and a matching set of wardrobe, drawers and bedside table this room is simple with a calm atmosphere. Tones of blue and sea green are brought in through the soft furnishings and wall art.
The bathroom sits alongside the master bedroom. A well designed area which utilises the narrow space fantastically. With high gloss white metro tiles and chrome fixtures and fittings the room is modern and tastefully decorated. The bathroom features a walk in shower, WC and basin.
Take the narrow staircase to the second floor where you’ll reach the roof space of the cottage. The surprisingly high ceilings and large windows make this room bright and spacious. Featuring twin beds and complementary furniture, this soft pink toned room feels feminine and chic.
The cottage is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main street, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful side of Whitby.
Neighborhood
Dolphin Cottage 1736 is located on Staffordshire Place, just off the iconic Flowergate – one of the oldest and most historic streets in Whitby. You’ll find cosy cafes, restaurants and shops lining the street, so the cottage is ideally located.
The Blue Flag West Cliff beach and promenade is just a short 5-minute walk from the property. On Pier Road, you’ll find fun arcades and plenty of fish restaurants where you can sample the catch of the day.
The other side of Whitby is full of narrow, medieval streets dotted with boutiques and pubs. Climb the famous 199 steps up to the Church of Saint Mary. You can also discover the renowned ruined Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s gothic novel ‘Dracula’.
Step outside of Whitby and you’ll uncover a haven of woodland and moorland. Whitby forms part of the North York Moors National Park so it’s the perfect place for long walks.
Getting Around
Dolphin Cottage 1736 is located in the centre of Whitby so the town can easily be explored on foot.
Whitby train station is just a short 5-minute walk away so villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast can easily be reached via rail. There’s also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station.
There are plenty of bus routes throughout Whitby. Hop on the X4 and you can visit beautiful coastal villages like Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Staithes. The X93 travels along the coast to Scarborough. The 95 route features plenty of quaint villages, such as Grosmont and Lealholm.
Guests have access to the full cottage. The keys to the property are accessed via a secure key safe and full details will be provided shortly before your arrival date.
We provide a parking scratch card for your stay which gives you free parking in the W zones.

lovely cottage.very clean and tidy. Lovely ambience and very close to amenities
31/01/2025
Clean and traditional cottage with comfortable beds set close to the heart of Whitby. Quite difficult to find and glad it wasn’t dark. Maybe an earlier check in without demanding an extra £30 would be a nice customer focused suggestion. The cottage was cold on arrival which was at the end of January. The heating was difficult to operate and took time to respond. Floorboards made it a bit noisy underfoot. Would have appreciated a rug in the seating area. Downstairs cupboard has a stale, damp mop which was quite smelly caused a bit of a smell for the rest of the area.

The accommodation was a sweet little place . Overlooking the bins ...lots of bins

Great location, very quirky, very well equipped and well maintained Frightened of the stairs but we knew when we booked, like a challenge ?

An absolutely ideal location. Such a cute old cottage updated where it mattered but still with lots of period features. Well equipped kitchen with everything we needed. Comfortable beds and nice towels. Spotlessly clean. The stairs could be a bit difficult for someone with mobility issues. Very tight and slippery. Can't really get around it with a place this old but worth considering.

I had to contact Host & Stay on the Sunday evening and did so via email, I got a reply straight away ??

Lovely little Cottage in a great location! Would definitely recommend and stay again! Stairs are a little steep and small. We were ok but wouldn’t advise if any mobility issues

The location was amazing, a little hard to find the property but once there it was great. Everything lovely and clean apart from under the were a little dusty. The cottage is quiet, clean, lovely facilities, comfy beds and good curtains/blinds, shower great. Just under the bed wasnt clean.

Clean, well located and well equipped.

The beds, quilts & pillows were very comfortable. The location was ok. The bedrooms were very comfortable and a decent size tho the double bed was pushed up against the wall. The dingy dark alleyway that you had to walk through to get to the cottage. This was especially unpleasant at night. The constant noise from others in the tiny courtyard. The lounge/dining room/kitchen was tiny with two very small uncomfortable sofas. No way could 4 people be comfy in there. It was freezing when we arrived & we had to ring up because we couldn't get the radiators to work. They switch themselves off after a maximum of 3 hours so you wake up in the night cold. This company Host & stay are all about making money. There were hidden charges we had to pay for insurance but didn't get an insurance document. Everything they do is automated & on line. They offered us a further 'discounted' stay but wanted to charge a booking fee even tho we were already there but wouldn't allow us to leave later than 10(we asked for 11am) due to their cleaning schedule!! We could hear the man next door cough & go to the bathroom. The staircases are dangerous. Very narrow, very steep and twisted. They were also slippy. You need rubber socks.

Great location, clean and cosy.

This was our first stop on our trip across the UK, and it was well-suited. Close to the train station, quiet, country setting, and very comfortable.
23/08/2024
Excellent stay! It was a bit tricky to find but not when using the hosts instructions and link to maps provided! The only downside was paying the extra security money on top of what we’d already paid but I can understand why they do it. Would defo go back x

Nothing absolute disgrace Everything we drove for 3 hours on the 2nd to get there and couldn't access the property had to turn around and drive 3 hours home
06/08/2024
Clean comfy beds Steep staircase which was an issue Very loud noisy seagulls which is expected but couldn’t sleep as noise went in all night
31/07/2024
Great place but if driving property listed as 1 Silver st which doesn’t exist and takes you round in circles. On listing look for estate agents as property through alley next door try and park near Angel pub and it’s easy to find.
17/07/2024
The location Another company (host and stay) demanding more money on top of the booking fee before releasing the key code for access to the property

Comfortable cottage in central Whitby, close to all that Whitby has to offer Parking near cottage is tricky but we managed to pull up nearby to drop off luggage and pick up parking permit. Finding the correct zone was a bit of a hassle (helped by cottage info) but once we were parked we could leave car and walk everywhere.
14/06/2024
Very clean, cute, good location, quiet, good wifi, good instructions, Kitchen good except fridge Bedrooms very comfortable Shower great Difficult to find as not actually on a road but down a passageway. Parking difficult which makes unloading tricky, especially for those with limited mobility. Also needs more handrails on steep narrow stairs. Not a great deal of room in living area Fridge tiny

Great location and price. Cottage was nice throughout didn't have a problem with anything. clean. Perfect for what we needed. Only downsides was the parking as we couldn't use the permit as we couldn't find a space so we paid for a carpark. Plus the stairs were abit challenging but they can't be helped would still give 5 stars.
13/04/2024
Pros: - Clean and tidy - Convenient location - Easy to get in - Clear, easy to understand manual/instructions - Quick, positive response from host when I asked a question Cons: - No free parking on premises as advertised in listing - Courtyard/bin area just outside front door attracted a lot of flies - Had to pay extra security deposit money to secure booking, despite have travel insurance cover - Host slow to refund security deposit - Frequent prompts from host to leave a review felt very pushy in light of the above

Great cottage, tucked away but on the doorstep of everything Whitby has to offer, just a short walk away from the harbour, seafront, shops, restaurants and train station. The interior of the cottage was clean and comfortable. The only thing I would note is, although a parking permit is provided, because of the location of the cottage there is no parking close by, but there is a closer, payable car park for loading/unloading bags. However, a lovely base for our stay!

The property was excellent, clean and in a great location. The only issue was it took over a week for the £250 deposit to be refunded.

Great accommodation in great condition and clean. Good location. Digital guide was very helpful both in the property and local area. The damage deposit process.
16/11/2023
Hassle getting keys. As there was an additional deposit. Location was a bit small.
14/11/2023
I would recommend to anyone it was lovely really enjoyed whitby thank u
09/11/2023
Very clean and central, comfortable bed, Could do with bolt Locks on main door, that would make it feel safer Better directions to the property we found it very difficult to locate ie name of the pub opposite and the name of the estate agent next to the alleyway would help
15/10/2023
The location was excellent, good communication for details, very quaint cottage Did not like having to pay a deposit, should have trust that not all people would do nothing else but to respect a property.
09/10/2023
The property had everything we needed. Very neat and clean. Nothing
19/09/2023
12/09/2023
Good location. Beautiful inside clean and comfortable Stairs were very narrow spiral staircase .
04/09/2023
Quiet location yet close to sea front and amenities. Stairs to upper rooms very steep. Found to be challenging for older people. Maybe this could be explained to people booking the cottage.
18/08/2023
13/08/2023
No issues - clear communication The only thing I would change would be to add a dishwasher
10/08/2023
It was a comfortable cottage in a central location It was as we expected and was good for what we needed Good communication pack before arrival The steps needed care with little ones but you just needed to be careful
04/08/2023
In the middle of the town - perfect. Nice cottage.

The perfect place to stay for a short trip to Whitby. We were very grateful for the clear and detailed instructions as to the location of the cottage, as well as the provision of scratch cards for parking which was very much appreciated. The cottage had all amenities we could ask for, and was clean and tidy. Easy check in instructions, and helpful advice about the local area. Will definitely be recommending to family and friends.

A lovely little house, just right for the three of us. The house was very comfortable, nicely decorated and clean, the kitchen was well equipped. Everything worked fine - wifi, TV, heating, getting in and leaving. The directions for parking and getting in and parking were very clear. We really enjoyed our stay and would book again!
31/05/2023
The accommodation was really nicely finished, and clean. Plenty of equipment in the kitchen if you want to cook, with a few useful essentials, do make a cuppa on arrival, which is always nice. and tv with iplayer etc. It took a bit of finding, as not accessible by car, and on street parking and public car park was a short walk away, so had to carry bags a little way. Once we had sorted the parking out, permits etc it wasn't an issue. Easy to walk into the town and local shops etc.

Beautiful cottage. Would recommend The toilet seat could do with replacing
21/04/2023
The location was perfect, the cottage was spotless and very well equipped. We particularly liked all the information re key code/directions to the property and messages from Host and Stay which made our arrival and entry to the property easy and effortless. Thank you! It’s not a matter of we didn’t like the stairs but more of how to navigate them safely and successfully. This did not take long at all.

23/03/2023
comfortable beds central pubs and shops all around gave us a permit to park free clean 2 flights stairs to get to top bedroom nothing for us just what we needed for a short stay
20/03/2023
Nothing. It was very uncomfortable The stairs were a safety hazard. We had to crawl the last 2 steps. If my mam or dad had fallen it would be a big issue. We left early. Only stopped 2 nights
05/03/2023
The cottage is beautiful so cozy ,perfect location, we had a fantastic time.
25/02/2023
Dolphin Cottage was lovely. It was well stocked with everything we needed for a comfy stay. Very central but tucked away off the main street. Great reception for WiFi which was crucial with a 10yo! We will definitely re book here again.
17/02/2023
spotless with lots of little extras (well stocked kitchen)
16/02/2023
Lovely little cottage in the centre of Whitby, perfect for two of us. Booking process with Host and Stay was appalling Number of texts and emails ridiculous, asking for verification with non-existent links and charging a further damage waiver after booking. Felt held to random by this complicated process and extra expense. In twenty years of booking holiday cottages I have never come across this and certainly won't book with Host and Stay again.

Location was fantastic. Easy access and loads of helpful info provided. Really nice and clean. Glad it's pet free as I'm very allergic. The stairs are a bit scary for the kids going up and down, but if they are careful it's fine.

Loved the central location which was perfect for our short stay.
16/12/2022
The weekend was very cold, and the heating was insufficient during our stay. as we have all come home with severe cold symtoms.
04/12/2022
Right in the town centre Finding a parking space was an issue
13/11/2022
06/11/2022
A perfect little cottage to enjoy whilst you stuff yourself on fish & chips and enjoy the many pubs Whitby has to offer! Just be careful if you are tall. You could end up bumping your head in the stairs, but overall a great place to stay!
29/10/2022
This is a cosy little cottage with everything you need for a stay in whitby. The central location is perfect for getting to the local attractions and the property is snug with lots of history. We loved the decor and everything was clean and in great working order. Parking was difficult and we had to park quite a walk away from the house. There was also some noise on one of the mornings from deliveries to a nearby hotel/bar.
25/10/2022
The property was spotlessly clean and furnished to a very high standard. nothing at all.
20/10/2022
Central to Whitby, cosy and comfortable. Beds comfortable, nice linen. Kitchen so well equipped, though we only used the kettle. Everything you need to cook a meal. Wi-Fi easily connected for your needs. Just make sure you park on the W parking bays, it’s easily to make a mistake as the parking poles are close together. The parking discs are in the welcome pack.

19/09/2022
The property had a lovely home feel to it. It had everything you needed at the property. nothing, it was great
15/09/2022
Location was amazing - very central and nice little cottage Got a parking ticket
10/09/2022
we found the staircase very difficult to negotiate.
07/09/2022
Lovely clean decorated beautifully good sized bedrooms and everything you could need in a cottage great location Struggled with the touch stay app it wouldn't download so getting information was a bit tricky finding the cottage also tricky as directions don't say its up by a tiny passagway next to estate agents but that's probably in the touch stay app
04/09/2022
Location was very central and easy to walk to places in whitby. N/a
03/09/2022
Such a lovely cottage, clean, well equipped and a central location. W zone parking isn’t very close.
25/08/2022
Lovely little place in a great location

20/08/2022
Quaint and cosy, comfy beds and Netflix ! Very handy location, tucked away in a quiet little nook. Bed was super comfy,; slept like a log! Pristine inside. Modern programmable radiators were fab for a quick warm up. Parking was a bit tricky as the W zone was generally full.

Nice clean & modern The staircase is quite difficult to negotiate
28/07/2022
Fantastic location in the heart of the town so very easy to walk around all the amenities. Everything we needed was at hand. Comfortable beds, kitchen was well equipped, nice bright decor and very clean. It is compact but was perfect for our needs. The stairs are steep so would not recommend for anyone with mobility issues but was fine for us.

the property was very clean and central found the stairs very dangerous. our 6yr old son was with us so I had to sleep in his room upstairs for fear of him getting up through the night on his own.
27/06/2022
It was in a prime position to all the bars and restaurants only 10 minutes walk to beach Court yard wasn't very private there were three cottages to share small outdoor seating area no tea towels And not enough shower gel
24/06/2022
Lovely cottage, location spot on .
21/06/2022
The Decor was very nice. The parking was a huge issue and not being able to find the property. Had to locate a parking space ( when we actually found the allocated streets) then had to carry heavy bags from the car to the property. No outdoor space to enjoy, no privacy as the back of the Estate Agents office with people sat at desks were facing us directly when we left the property or stood outside, lots of noise with people talking/shouting in the courtyard/ dragging bins, etc.. could here all this clearly as the windows aren't double glazed. The stairs were slippery ( wooden floor) and very narrow to get to the upstairs rooms...no door on the twin bedroom either as it's a loft space.

05/06/2022
05/06/2022
great property. perfect location bit hit & miss if you can get a parking space near the property but that’s a minor issue - & not a big deal
04/06/2022
Quaint, historical cottage set right in the heart of the town parking was confusing!
30/05/2022
All of it nothing at all
25/05/2022
Clean property with easy check in
17/05/2022
Lovely cottage super near to high street. Slight issue with finding car park but that's just an issue within Whitby, and we were generously provided a discount card for W. Do make sure to park correctly, otherwise tickets may happen! Easy to stop near the cottage and load off luggage before going off to find parking. Instructions clearly provided, do read through before visiting so familiar with what needs to be done if you're driving. Nothing!
08/05/2022
The cottage was lovely, very quaint and cosy. The closeness to town centre was great. Parking a few streets away and the noisey pubs

26/04/2022
A very good experience! ??The room was clean and tidy and very well stocked with cutlery! I stayed with my friends and felt the room decor was very cosy too. My only regret is that I only stayed here for one night… Next time if I go to Whitby I'd still choose this place and stay for a few more days! BTW, the landlord was very welcoming and quick to respond to messages!

A wonderful cottage in the heart of Whitby. Very clean and tidy.
29/03/2022
Modern decor with all amenities. Central location. Smart TV with WiFi was excellent. Complimentary tea and coffee facilities with small milk was appreciated. Even though a good central location, at the weekend it was very noisy due to entertainment in surrounding bars. Stairs are quite narrow and steep - additional handrails would be safer. I didn’t find the front door locking very safe (no additional locks etc). It would be very cold if you stayed in the winter months. Outside courtyard grubby.
14/03/2022
05/03/2022
Great clean cottage
04/03/2022
a good central location, good kitchen, good heating and WiFi, comfortable beds, nice bathroom The hard wood floors, 2 x spiral staircases are not practical for a 2 yr old. I truly believe with no baby gate it really is not practical to stay there with a 2 yr old, the floors are extremely slippery for a small child and whilst I acknowledge other families will happily stay there for me it did not work. again, outside the remit of the owner of the cottage the pub nearby is ridiculously loud with live acts until midnight even on a Sunday and the parking permit scheme is really difficult especially when the loading bay is busy there are a number of reviews mentioning the loudness of the pub and again whilst the response is nothing can be done it is right to make future bookers aware-it is something to really consider before booking.
26/02/2022
well located, clean and well organized stairs would be tricky for less mobile
18/09/2021
Great little cottage very clean and great decor
18/07/2021
Great location. Nice place to be based for a quick trip to Whitby.
26/09/2020
Beautifully and tastefully decorated. Well equipped and welcoming. Beds so comfortable. Really good access to town. Only issue was smoke alarm sensitivity and would stairs challenging if any mobility issue
27/08/2020
Good points - very clean, nice sized bedrooms, nice bathroom, central location. Bad points - difficult to access with luggage and two young children - we knew there was no parking but didn’t realise we couldn’t even unload outside and then leave to find parking - you’d really struggle without two adults present. Small living area - you’d struggle for more than a few day’s with full capacity. Frontage a bit dirty and access is up an alley and past about ten bins. We had a good trip but wouldn’t stay again unless cost was a lot less!
19/08/2020
A great base from which to explore Whitby. Full of character and super clean. Perfect for our few days away
05/08/2020
Great location. Very clean and great design. It’s a snug space but we were a family of 4 with young children and we’re out and about all day. Stairs are very tight so not advisable for older people or limited mobility. We had a great time
02/08/2020
Lovely little cottage in great location. Beautifully clean. Single glazing means seagulls are particularly noisy so take earplugs!
