Property Details

The Space
Esk View Cottage is a homely and charming bolthole on the North Yorkshire coast. Located across three floors, this quirky property has an open plan living and dining room, kitchen, three bedrooms, one bathroom and an enclosed patio area at the rear of the cottage.

The open plan living and dining area is the perfect place to relax with your loved ones. With a welcoming and cosy feel, you can relax on the sofa or sink into one of the armchairs after a long day of exploring Whitby. Switch on the TV to watch your favourite shows on Freeview or get stuck into a good book. Traditional in style, the cottage has a beautiful, statement fireplace and the purple feature wall ties in with the matching chairs. From the tall window, you can see views of the River Esk and the boats in the harbour.

The dining area includes a wooden table and dark green chairs. Nestled into the cove, it’s cosy feel makes it perfect for intimate dining with your party. Ideal for evening meals, you can open a bottle of wine and tuck into a home cooked meal.

Head up the steps to the traditional kitchen. Fully equipped for self-catering stays, it includes an oven, hob, fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle and cookware so you can serve up delicious meals during your staycation at the cottage.

Outside you’ll find an enclosed patio area. An added luxury in Whitby, this space includes a decked terrace area with outdoor furniture. Surrounding the patio is plenty of greenery and you’ll spot quirky fishing nets which pay homage to the seaside town. Blissful on spring mornings with a coffee and summer evenings with a glass of bubbly, this outdoor spot is a real treat.

Back inside the cottage and up the stairs to the first floor, you’ll find the first bedroom and the bathroom. Featuring a colour scheme of royal blue and white, the first bedroom has a traditional seaside cottage feel. The comfy small double bed boasts plush bedding and linens. Matching industrial style wall lamps provide quirky alternatives to bedside lamps. A vintage dresser and chair complete the space.

The spacious, nautical-themed bathroom has a sink, toilet and a bath with a shower attachment, as well as an overhead shower.

Head up to the second floor and you’ll find a further two bedrooms. The first bedroom on this floor has a small double bed underneath the sloped ceiling to create a really snug feel. With the same nautical vibe as the rest of the cottage, you’ll see boats on the cushions and cute anchor decorations.

The second bedroom has twin beds with matching maritime bedding. This cosy loft room features two colourful murals depicting an on-the-beach Punch and Judy show, and a light house surrounded by boats. The murals, plus
the red, white and blue bunting make this a magic bedroom that is ideal for children. Look out of the large dorma window at the views of Whitby ahead and the river below. During the summer months you can see the steam train puffing its way along from Whitby to Pickering.

Neighborhood
Esk View Cottage is located on the East side of Whitby near the River Esk in the dock area.

Walk along Church Street and you’ll wind up at the East bank where you’ll find narrow medieval streets dotted with boutiques, pubs and fish restaurants. Climb the famous 199 steps up to the Church of Saint Mary. You can also discover the renowned ruined Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s gothic novel ‘Dracula’.

Walk over the swing bridge which sits over the River Esk and you’ll find yourself at the West side of town. It’s here you can discover cosy pubs, fun arcades and even more fish restaurants! Continue along the lively road until you reach the beautiful, blue flag West Cliff Beach which is lined with idyllic beach huts.

Step outside of Whitby and you’ll uncover a haven of woodland and moorland. Whitby forms part of the North York Moors National Park so it’s the perfect place for long walks.

Getting Around
The centre of Whitby is a short ten-minute walk from Esk View Cottage.

Whitby train station is less than half a mile away so villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast can easily be reached via rail. There’s also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station.

There are plenty of bus routes throughout Whitby. Hop on the X4 and you can visit beautiful coastal villages like Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Staithes. The X93 travels along the coast to Scarborough. The 95 route features plenty of quaint villages, such as Grosmont and Lealholm.

Guests have access to the full cottage. The keys to the property can be accessed via a secure key safe.

Like many of the properties along Church Street and other similar locations in Whitby, Esk View Cottage is situated high up, thus offering beautiful views over the River Esk and beyond. However, because of its elevated position, it can only be accessed from the main road (Church Street) via steps. These steps (24 in total) are narrow and steep and may be a problem for young families or people with mobility problems.

Alternatively, there is another access from Green Lane which is slightly longer but does involve less steps. Please note that both accesses are public thoroughfares and are not the private property of Esk View Cottage.

Please note that the gas fireplace cannot be used by guests.

While the property can technically sleep up to six guests, bookings for a maximum of four guests are recommended due to the limited downstairs space on offer at Esk View Cottage.

Great location!! Easy 5 minute walk to the town. The upstairs double bed on the top floor had no mattress cover. And the kids bedroom main light was damaged and we couldn't use it due it being dangerous

We had a great weekend at Esk View Cottage which is a short walk away from the centre of Whitby in a quieter area of the town. The cottage was clean, and exactly as pictured.

A lovely terraced house, albeit tucked out of the way. Thankfully all our party was mobile, but can imagine this being difficult to access by anyone with a disability. The accommodation was comfortable and for the most part clean. The inside of several kitchen cupboards showed signs of vegetable oil staining (where a leaky bottle had clearly been left for a while, but not cleaned), and could have done with a clean. There was a slightly fusty damp smell in the kitchen, but this could have been because the house was shut up prior to our visit. Beds were comfortable, as was the furniture and the bedding was spotless. Wifi is a bit slow, but 5G was available on O2, as was EE Wifi which as BT Broadband customers was well received. Overall, it is in a very handy location, albeit with a short stroll, however the lack of parking may be an issue to some less fitter guests. We were made aware of this and prepared accordingly.

We had a couple of night stay here. The property is ideal for exploring Whitby. It is on the same side as the abbey. The property was clean and tidy. Which has plates, pans towels etc. there are some steps from the main road which are sandstone and worn. So be careful in the wet. You can access the property from a side entry, which is much easier for young children etc. the only downside was parking. But there are spaces if you look for them. We parked near the Abbey and walked down to the property. We look forward to staying here again.

Great location, comfortable beds , quiet area good views Good communication, However it requires a deep clean Opened bathroom window and it was black on window frames Cobwebs and flies in and around the property Alarm was going off during stay so had to remove battery Light didn't work on stairs The parking is based on finding a spot as close as possible In our case it was quite a hike to accommodation The steps in and around the property where particular difficult to navigate for my parents in there 60s Which it does state in the description Whitby is a beautiful place,

This property is situated in easy walking distance to the centre of Whitby. The kitchen is a little small but has everything needed for cooking meals. The seating area at the back is delightful especially when lit by fairy lights in the evening. The shower is easy to control and powerful. Beds are comfortable. The lounge is small and the dining room table only has space for four to sit round it and even then it’s a bit of a tight squeeze! Cute ornaments and homely touches plus lots of childrens games and dvds. Several useful guidebooks to the local area. Great view of the harbour from front windows. Steps are steep and uneven. People with any mobility issues should not stay here. Overall our group of five, three adults and two teenagers, had a lovely week here.

Location is really good, if lucky you can get parking on main road just in front. Kitchen has everything you need for short stay. Beds are comfy and clean Shower went hot and cold, with no consistency Decor is a little dated, and cobwebs in corners of rooms but nothing too bad.

Nothing It was a very dangerous property the steps at the bathroom need sorting out big time ,the steps up to the premises were so dangerous and the back steps were not alot better ,rubbish bags everywhere there was an empty bottle on the floor behind the TV and I don't think the TV had been cleaned behind in a while We were left a note on our bed about stripping our own beds so overall won't be going back anytime soon

Located close to Whitby harbour and Abbey Property needed a deep clean. Property needed redecoration. Baking trays and frying pan need replacement. Kitchen sink tap blanking plate broken and needs replacing. Bathroom floor tiles around toilet loose. Bathroom sink, hot tap spins as it is turned on and off. Shower head riser loose TV did not work Heating thermostat by fireplace in living room - cover was removed and lying on mantelpiece, wires exposed. No replacement bags for kitchen waste or hoover. No mention of 20-30 steps up from the pavement to the property in pre booking description. No problem for us but could be for those with mobility difficulties. Alternative access is onto a road with no pavement and blind bend. Parking not great - but we knew this before booking.

Good location for whtiby centre. Parking was terrible, unless you are very lucky and get a space we had to park about 1/2 a mile away. It’s up very steep, slippy stairs so carrying bags is quite hard. House itself was nice, we had 6 adults there so was a bit cramped in the living room but bedrooms fine and towels provided. It was quiet and 5 mins walk in Whitby centre.

Gut gelegene Unterkunft. Gute Ausstattung, liebevoll eingerichtet. Für 6 Personen beengt am Esstisch. Küche eigentlich gut ausgestattet, jedoch mehrere Töpfe etc. Wackelig, zerkratzt/ Deckel kaputt. Hier müsste man mal aussortieren/erneuern. Leider war das Geschirr teilweise nicht sehr sauber im Schrank und die Fächer nicht sauber. Im Schrank befanden sich Lebensmittel von evtl. Vormietern, die hätten entsorgt werden sollen. Z.B. Mayonaise.

the property had been thoroughly cleaned inside. the location is central to Whitby but difficult to access from the street and difficult to park cars. The garden was a building site and nowhere on the description does it say it is shared. This is a very important factor for customers wishing to book with pets. The tv was unworkable for the whole stay, due to the lack of a remote control The Wi-Fi was unworkable due to the plug being broken. The most surprising and disappointing factor was the response I had from Host & Stay customer service when reporting these issues. I have been made to feel it was my fault and my responsibility to rectify the problems. I paid £337 for a two night stay. Completely overpriced and very poor value for money.

No cancellation upon booking, yet within 24 hours we were asked to pay an additional fee, this should be detailed up front and should form part of the price! Arrival time changed and when request was submitted to revert to original arrival time, unhelpful replies were provided. The property is up a number of uneven steps. The property was rented as sleeping 6, on the outside the plaque says it sleeps 4 and the property is totally unsuitable for 6 people, it felt incredibly claustrophobic. Underneath the sofa was hair and old false eyelashes. The spiral staircase up to the top floor is unsuitable for a rented property, and we were concerned of the fire hazard posed by having no escape from the top floor. The seal on the fridge doesn't work so you have to jam it shut, and the milk shelves in the fridge door are broken and unusable. The property is located well for access to the town, and the kitchen has all appliances and utensils needed. Parking is on street so difficult to find space.

A lovely, quirky cottage, with comfortable beds, plenty of hot water and a nice outdoor space. We felt relaxed and at home, and were comfortable there with 3 adults and 2 teenagers. Centrally located, lovely views, well provisioned, and all kitchen appliances work well! There is a thoughtfully provided clothes airer for anyone who doesn't wish to use the dryer function on the washer-dryer. Our stay in Whitby was lovely - there is so much to do in the area, and locals were friendly, interested, and helpful. Do visit Botham's for your bread and a traditional brack or parkin!

Christy

21/10/2022

The property itself was lovely, however the steps leading up to the property need to be detailed here more. Another review mentioned the steps but we didn't understand what that meant and thought it referred to steps at the property itself, however where the property is situated there are very steep uneven stone steps, about 20 leading to the row of houses. It's not really suitable for people with mobility issues, we had my mother with us, she is able to walk up stairs but we had to search out a route so she didn't go up these steps. Had we realised we would not have had this holiday let as not really suitable for us with my mum being with us, had it been 2 adults and 2 older children (teenagers) it was fine for us. This unfortunately meant that we were restricted in what we could do. The parking - it doesn't have parking, we went week before half term October so was able to find street parking at the top, none on the street below, which was a challenge when unloading in particular when not knowing the routes to and from. The property seemed to have what was needed the gas fire didn't work though but not needed as heating was really good. Fridge needs replacing as doesn't keep things cold, other than this it was comfortable and had what you needed for a short break.

Location very close to Whitby which was good. But not accessible for any mobility disabilites It needs to be clearly stated that this is NOT accessible for anyone with any mobility issues. The steps up to the cottage were dangerous, very steep and not marked. I went with a person who was blind and she found that terrifying. Very dangerous front of cottage for anyone with mobility issues or small children. Small wall with some pots on and then a sheer drop.

Only thing we liked was the lication 5 mins walk into Whitby

Sarah

12/09/2022

The house was really nicely decorated with lots of quirky ornaments. Good bedding - although towels had seen better days. Close to central Whitby. Quiet. Far too small for 6 people. Could not use the dining table and when we moved it out the floor was sticky and dirty underneath. Not enough plates and glasses for six people. And what was there had been put away dirty and had to be re-washed. The listing is misleading about how many steps up to the entrance. Not sure when the cleaners were last in but there was rubbish strewn all across the top of the steps from a neighbouring property - food and bathroom waste - quite disgusting. The wooden decking out the back is very slippy and never dries out as it's so dark and shady. No recycling facilities.

11/08/2022

The location was excellent and very close to the centre. The beds were comfortable and the whole house was very cozy. It was clean and had a great bathroom The WiFi didn't work and there was a cat that visited the property. There was also some quite offensive toys in one of the bedrooms which should be removed.

01/08/2022

The location was great, not a long walk to the Harbour at all. The bedrooms were a good size and comfortable. loved the decor of the kids bedroom. The outside area was really cute especially at night all lit up it was lovely. We had a special visitor too which the kids loved who goes by the name ham sandwich, a local Cat. The parking is difficult especially with being so many of us carrying lots of bags (4 children including a baby) The stairs up to the property were steep and sloping downward so now t got when wet or icy too I would say. not ideal for families. There was another way to get in which was better with less use of the steps but depending where you can park the car. We did vacuum when we arrived as the were a lot of animal hair but we realised the cat must visit often and the kids did enjoy that.

Cristina

26/07/2022

The property had everything we needed and a well-equipped kitchen. The bedrooms were welcoming, and a lot of thought had been put into the decor, particularly the one obviously intended for children. The terrace was charming, as was the bench by the front door, although the weather didn't allow us to use either much. As pretty much everyone else says, accessing the property is a daunting task! There is an alternative route with far fewer stairs, which is not immediately obvious from Church Street. It requires a little bit more walking around the corner, but it does provide a welcome relief.

22/06/2022

Excellent accommodation, Maybe the steps leading to the property should be highlighted more, as not really family friendly with young children or elderly people, we did find an easier way, through the lanes, but still steps to contend with, but it was like going through the jungle, as lots of weeds, not ideal for push chairs, prams etc.

Lovely cottage in a great location. As reviews have said- steps are tricky but not terrible or slippery. Right on the harbour so everything is within walking distance. Cottage itself is gorgeous. Lots of natural charm and everything you need. The garden is really quirky and a definite sun trap. Really can’t fault the place. The hosts were incredibly organised and helpful. They had online information which covered everything- like your own in depth brochure. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.

17/09/2021

Overall a decent location for access to all amenities but do thoroughly check the parking availability. It was really, limited and we had to unload from car park approx 400/500 yards away and take all our belongings along the road before the stair access so not ideal if you are not fit and healthy. We knew we could not park outside the property but even for loading and unloading nearby is a challenge. Would not advise for more than two adults and two small children, the living space is really quite small but cosy if there are less people. Easy to operate boiler and reliable hot water and clean bedding and towels, general cleanliness was not up to scratch on our visit but we could have been unlucky.

Perfect location for exploring Whitby. The town centre is a short 10 minute walk away and the local supermarkets are a five minute drive around the corner. As others have mentioned, parking can be an issue but we didn’t have too many issues. The house was just the right size for us.

18/07/2021

Great location for visiting Whitby Lovely views of river Esk Easy walk into town to pubs/ restaurants/ cafes Parking was tricky but we managed to find spaces on the road above the property (The Ropery) but there are public car parks on Church street or by the Abbey Be aware of the steep steps to access the property and narrow stairs inside the house to the 2nd floor (especially if you have young children or mobility issues) We enjoyed sitting outside the front in the evening sun and also a more shady area at the back. The property is quite small to accommodate 6 people but as we had some warm weather we were lucky enough not to have to stay inside too much.

Good central location, the cottage is clean and tidy and more suitable for four people, with two out of three quite small bedrooms.

Martyn

18/08/2020

The place is indeed very cosy, and has all the amenities we could need. The views from the living room, and front bedrooms overlook the River Esk, which is lovely, and there is a bench outside the front of the property for doing the same. The centre of Whitby is just a 10 minute walk away, or there are bus stops right outside the property. Some things to note are that access to the property is via a large set of steps, or a narrow back alley, which we found difficult to negotiate with our pram. It was also often difficult to get a parking spot on the street below, though it is also possible to park on the street above, which is slightly further away.

Very unfortunate for us that a major tree surgery operation was underway Next door which spoiled our time at the property as the noise was incredible. Offered small discount if we book again but wouldn’t and couldn’t afford take the risk incase it happened again.
