North Yorkshire Beaches

North Yorkshire is one of the most uniquely beautiful places in the UK, if not, the world. It’s got it all, from rolling landscapes of farmers fields and moors, to bustling city centres with vibrant eateries and cultures, as well as villages and smaller towns that feature that quintessentially British atmosphere.

What North Yorkshire is also famous for however, is it’s beaches, and for good reason. There are some of the most magnificent beaches set in the heart of North Yorkshire, and in this blog, we’ll explore the best the area has to offer. We’ll also take a look at where you can stay to make the most of the local area with accommodation that matches the beauty and unique nature of its surroundings.

So, let’s kick off the deep-dive into North Yorkshire beaches with a beautiful Victorian Spa Town – Saltburn-by-The-Sea.

Saltburn-by-The-Sea

Saltburn is a Victorian Spa Town dating back centuries, full of charm and an unmatched atmosphere. The last remaining pier in Yorkshire is in Saltburn, and the cliffs and beaches provide the perfect seaside getaway for the family.

The beach is spotless and seaside resort amenities are plentiful, and the seawater has for the second year in a row been recognised with Blue Flag status for its high quality and cleanliness.

From the cliff lift to surfing opportunities, it has one of the best and most activity-filled beaches in the country. The Victorian Spa Town itself is also just a short walk away from the sea, where you’ll find an array of charming architecture, local businesses, and high-end cafes and eateries.

Where to Stay in Saltburn-by-the-Sea

Artsbank Apartment is a luxury apartment ideal for couples or a small family, and dates back to the 1800s where it was originally a bank until being transformed into a huge art gallery in 2010. It features a mix of modern styling and original features as well as incredible views and beautiful interiors. It sleeps up to 4 and is one of the most unique accommodation spots in North Yorkshire.

Whitby

Whitby is a world-famous seaside town steeped in history and nestled in North Yorkshire, split by the River Esk and overlooking the North Sea. There’s lots to do in the area, whether it’s a visit to the ruined, fantastically Gothic Abbey – which was source of inspiration for Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ – a walk up or down the 199 steps, a visit to nearby Church of St. Mary, or a trip to amusement arcades.

There are plenty of independent shops as well as magnificent fish and chips, most notably from the likes of The Magpie, along with lots of gothic clothing and accessories outlets and of course, The Dracula Experience.

It’s the perfect getaway for a short or long stay and is the ideal way of soaking up the British seaside in a unique way. Whether it’s a walk along the numerous beaches that occupy the seafront, from Whitby Beach to Saltwick Bay, or even a stroll to check out the cliffs, there’s something for the entire family to do at one of the best beach towns in the country.

Where to Stay in Whitby

We have a range of accommodation with properties available to let for both long and short stay purposes in the area. The Cow House is a beautifully aesthetic 2 sleeping accommodation located just steps away from the cobbles. It features exposed brickwork throughout and exposed wooden beams for that rustic yet modern appeal and features one bed and one bathroom.

For larger groups and family stays, Adventure House sleeps up to 8 guests and is located in the heart of Flowergate. It’s recently refurbished and is a short walk from everything the town has to offer.

To find something in between, visit our Whitby page which features accommodation suitable for a range of different requirements.

Scarborough

Just up the road from Whitby lies Scarborough, another wonderful seaside resort town which has lots of history and lots to offer families and couples on the hunt for a getaway to the seaside.

With a growing reputation and excellent restaurants and facilities, Scarborough is probably most well-known for its large beach, which is popular among locals and tourists each and every year.

The seafront offers fantastic views of the cliffs, houses, and forests, and it also boasts a beautiful harbour which acts as the perfect place to have a portion of fish and chips or simply watch the ships sail by. The beach is clean, sandy and exquisite, with loads of things to do in the historic town itself.

Where to Stay in Scarborough

If you’re looking for a romantic getaway in Scarborough, why not try Skipper’s Rest @ North Marine House. It features unique views of the local cricket ground and sleeps 2, with 1 king size bedroom, a private bathroom and an open plan living and kitchen area.

For something for the entire family, Sitwell Cottage sleeps 5 guests, with 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. It’s a home with plenty of charm and includes a large kitchen-diner as well as all modern amenities.

Both properties are well situated to enjoy the beach, coastline, and nature trails the area has to offer.

Staithes

Staithes is a smaller getaway when it comes to North Yorkshire seaside retreats, and features a small, sandy, secluded beach. The town sees the North Yorkshire Moors meet the coastline, and for years it’s been a beautiful fishing village with a cosy atmosphere and friendly locals.

The beach makes for a brilliant excursion and an ideal getaway location for fossil hunters, fishing enthusiasts and geologists, not to mention photographers and families.

Young children in your family will probably recognise Staithes as the location for CBBC’s Old Jack’s Boat, which features Salty the Dog, a children’s favourite.

Where to Stay in Staithes

A small area, Staithes is packed full of beauty and atmosphere and we have accommodation to match. From the Harbour Cottage which sleeps 4, to Gull’s Haven Cottage which sleeps 6, we have something for every size of party.

So, whether you’re a solo traveller or family looking to get away from it all in a beautiful area of North Yorkshire, we’ve got something to suit you.

Redcar

Last but not least is Redcar. Famous for its fish and chips and vertical pier, Redcar is a brilliant seaside town with an enormous, 8-mile beach stretching from South Gare to Saltburn.

There’s also plenty to do in Redcar other than the beach, with restaurants and classic seaside attractions such as lemon tops and amusement arcades.

The beaches are always the main attraction, and Redcar is perfect for short family getaways or romantic trips with a loved one. You may even recognise Redcar beach from the blockbuster film Atonement!

You can even partake in some extreme sports such as surfing and windsurfing on Redcar beach or simply take in the fantastic views of the North Sea.

Where to Stay in Redcar

We provide two places to stay in Redcar, Bellevue Apartment 1 and Bellevue Apartment 2, located on Redcar seafront.

Both sleep 4 guests and feature 2 bedrooms, with beautiful, open-plan and modern styling throughout the properties and picturesque views of the beach and sea. They each have a large shower room and are perfect for a getaway with the family or a staycation with friends.
