Visiting Grasmere
Known as the jewel in the Lake District, the charming village of Grasmere is in the very heart of the National Park and surrounded by rolling hills. A peaceful haven, the village has its own lake as well as shops, pubs and cafes. Perfect for swimming and rowing, the lake in Grasmere doesn’t have motor boats so it’s a lot quieter than other lakes in the National Park.
Things to do in Grasmere
If you are visiting Grasmere from the end of July to the beginning of September, make sure to take a trip to Grasmere Village Hall. Here you will find the Lake Artists Society Summer Exhibition, where 300 exhibits by local artists and sculptors are on display.
One of England’s most beloved poets, William Wordsworth grew up in Grasmere, and once described the village as ‘The most loveliest spot that man hath found.’ Wordsworth’s former home, Dove cottage, is now open as a museum and is a popular spot for visitors to learn about William’s life and work.
Make sure to explore Grasmere’s town end on your visit. Located on the outskirts of Grasmere village, you will find it is filled with architectural and historic character. In fact, most of the buildings are over 150 years old and traditional features like oil lamps and cobbled streets are still standing!
Explore Grasmere Lake
Grasmere is situated near the northern end of Grasmere lake and is surrounded by beautiful scenery, including hills, mountains and lakes. A popular destination for tourists, you can enjoy the incredible surroundings as well as take part in exciting outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and fishing. Grasmere has a beautiful lake which you can take a leisurely stroll around, or if you are the more adventurous type, there are several hiking trails that start from the village!
Eating and Drinking in Grasmere
After a long day of exploring the beautiful outdoors, make sure to reward yourself with a wholesome meal at one of the many restaurants in Grasmere. One of our personal favourites is The Jumble Room, which has been serving wonderful, international dishes for over 20 years. The Jumble Room takes the very best local and where possible, organic ingredients and cooks them in to fantastic dishes! We are not surprised it was given the Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Award in 2022.
Wash your meal down with a refreshing cider in Poets Bar , one of the most picturesque of the Grasmere pubs. This pub is based in a 1800 historic house hotel, complete with a welcoming beer garden to sit in and enjoy fabulous views of the local fells.
Fun fact: Grasmere is particularly famous for its gingerbread, which has been baked in the area for over 150 years and is a local speciality so make sure you give it a try on your visit!
